A bit heavy, should be made of Birch instead of particleboard. Should have passive crossovers included. Output is impressive, good quality sound, especially for modern electronic and hip hop style. Impressed with how deep and hard they go.
For the intended price point and use, I think it should have a passive crossover built in. I added one for flexibility, but should come with IMHO. Have 2 1/4" in/out. One speakron (don't use)...
As I mentioned, I put in a passive crossover, so I got to see the internal construction of the cabinet. Well built, good internal bracing and build. Would prefer good Birch ply, but still saw good construction and bracing. A bit heavy due to the particleboard build.
I'm a DJ, been doing this for almost 20 years now and have used a bunch of different brands over the years. I found someone selling a pair of these on Craigslist for a decent deal, read some reviews, listened to them, and bought them from the guy for a good deal. Figured, WTF, if no like, can resell. NOT GOING TO. I used them at a middle mchool dance in a gym I've done at least a dozen times, corner loaded them with a channel each from a QSC GX5 going into each (500w each)...blew away the Yorkville YX-18, and even the Yorkville Elite LS608's that I've used there before. Felt the bass at the door on the opposite side of the gym. They went low, had that "boom" that goes with the hip-hop and electronic dance music, and simply sounded impressive, ESPECIALLY for the price.

Bought this at my local Guitar Center in Fountain Valley, CA. Great deal, the sub was on clearance. Went home and checked reviews, 11 great reviews, sounds good! Brought the sub home, and right out of the box I got suspicious. Two of the screws that hold the grille in place were missing, and a couple more were not screwed in all the way. Also, the speaker was only held in place by four screws (although the speaker has 8 holes for screws), and one was not secure. I removed the grille, and the baffle was completely destroyed where the assembler had tighten one of the t-nuts right through the baffle, and destroyed the cheap MDF baffle. Never got to even try it out, straight back to GC to return the speaker. No problem returning the speaker, but I wasted time and gas driving back and forth. Should have known that the price was too good to be true. Now I can't trust Harbinger for any future purchases.

Very nice sub at a very nice price

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

          .
I used a DBX 223Xl and crossed over at 100-125 and I was really happy with the tone.
"tone" being the key word here. I was able to get a really nice smooth bass responce running 800 watts into 8ohms. I had it about half mass on the amp and was getting some nice bass with my two 15" Powered tapco speakers. The Tapcos (now I think they are sold under the Mackie name) are already bi-amped and crossed over, so I did not run them through the DBX.
These are great cabs at a great price and I am very happy with the purchase.
The cab is mdf or something of the sort so they are very heavy, but you can always add on some castors. Now I am just trying to isolate all the little things in this rooms that rattle when the sub is kickin. So if you have not tried the Harbinger brand, I would say it's worth your time.
I gave it an 8 just because I have not tried support and I have only had it for a few days.
          Cheers!

          Great Subwoofers, I own two

          By Seth Stanfield

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

This Harbinger sub is great at doing exactly what it is meant to do, provide powerful, clear low end. Bought one almost two years ago and it has not once let me down. I have used it for mobile DJing and live sound. It performs very well for both applications. I have used it more for DJing and for that set up I normally power it with a QSC GX5. This makes for a rock solid, extremely simple set up. I have added 4 wheels to mine. I will only advise being somewhat cautious when handling as the carpet covering is not invencible. To sum it up, I really like this sub which is why I own two. Even after hearing and using some of the higher priced brand, this sub was still the one I wanted. Oh, and it comes at a really good price.

          Big bang for your buck

          By blues58man

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

I bought a pair of these used, unseen and unheard until I got them home and set up. Powered with a Crown Xs 1200 and crossed at 100 Hz and low passed at 50, they hit hard. I was pleasantly surprised. At our first gig, they performed well. These sound good. As far as looks, well, not so great. Real thin rat fur carpet covering, small metal corners and only one speakon connector, which gripes me because it doesn't allow you to daisy chain these easily. At 8 ohms each, they are ideal for running two on one side of a stereo power amp, making a 4 ohm load and maximizing your amp's output. So, not including an extra speakon connection in parallel is just plain thoughtless. But one can add their own, and that's what I'll eventually do. The cabs are MDF ( medium density fiberboard=glue and sawdust ), so, these aren't for throwing around. But I did peak inside and they have loads of bracing, plywood re-enforcement, sound absorption material and caulked seams and joints, so no cab rattles or air leaks. As I said, they sound dang good. Do not over power nor under power them. I'd recommend a quality amp that delivers 4 to 6 hundred watts per speaker. My Crown @ 4 ohms is 1100 watts divided by 2= 550 watts per cab. Use a good x-over ( I use a dbx ) and depending on your upper cabs, x-over at anywhere from 90 to 120. I'd low pass at 40, and preferably at 50 Hz. There's not much punch below that and it will take a strain off the speakers and amp. If you're in the market for low cost but good sound, these will do it.

Great BOOM for your BUCK !!!

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

You always have to start with a little bit of background on the reviewer before you can believe anything that is written by said reviewer. So hear(Ha-Ha!) we go. Started by working as sound-man for various Canadian bands alas April Wine, The Wackers, Mashmakan . Then off to recording engineer at various studios mostly in the Ottawa-Montreal area some in the states like Andre Perry, Studio Paff, Viewpoint and Clear mount. Finally got involved with building speakers with Dr. Floyd Toole of the NRC (National Research Council), we're talking high end speakers for the audiophile. Help design some of the better name brand speakers that are now being imported from England, Canada and the States. Now the SpeakerNo.1 Heard it and I was impressed with the fact that they build their own drivers. It really isn't that difficult just time consuming, nevertheless, they do it.No.2 As a sub-woofer goes it is very musical. There is a slight roll off from the 32HZ level as they did state in their spec's but with no perceptional after tones.No.3 The handling of power with the level of music(db) is quite impressive. The decibels that this speaker puts out, acknowledging the fact that it is an 8-ohm speaker, also shakes the mind.No.4 The speaker cabinet is well made although I would have much preferred plywood over particle board. There is too much of a chance of air pockets that may impeded the sound quality. It does have the industrial look and feel to it. You could probably run trucks over it and not rip the covering they have applied to the cab. It is very robust. Overall the speaker is a very well thought out product with some major input into the design of the raw speaker and cabinet together. If anything , these two items seem to be a marriage made in heaven with pricing made for the average citizen. Unless you have to have a name brand speaker you would be a fool to pass these by. Very well built and very well thought out. Don't pay more for something that is put forth in 80% name and 20% quality. This speaker is all of 100% power. You could not ask for anything more.I am as happy as a piglet being let go just before diner time. The products used for testing these speaker are: Crown XLS 802D Bridged Mono, Bryston4, Theata, Adcom, NAD (not Nady), dbx Compressor with sub woofer out, Soundcraft Crossover, Neumann, Shure and Audix microphones, Audio Research and Halfer pre amps, Monster Cables, Empire and LinnSondek turntables with Grace and Black Widow tone arms and Shure and Denon cartridges, various direct to discs recordings, Pioneer MX1000 CD player (Beta) MOTU 828, 2408 and MIDI converter

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

I bought four of the Harbinger hx118s subs from Musician's Friend,to go with the two I had previously bought from their sister company(G.C.) I'm running these with a Crown XLS5000 power amp...3 per side...with two Two-way 15's sitting on top for my mids/highs. I think with the load distributed like I'm running my system...you probably can't do any better as far as dollar value-for-db goes. there may be tighter sounding combo's...but not anywhere near this price point...I know...I listened to Peavey,QSC,Mackie,JBL,Yamaha,Kustom,Bose, and a few others. But I kept coming back to the $$$ value of the Harbinger's. Just make sure you are giving these little-thumpers adequate power...and they will impress.I'm running about 1800-2000 watts per side(3 cabs per)

          These subs are great

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

I have yet to be disappointed by these speakers. I'm pushing them with an old crown 600 watt amp and they sound phenominal! Can't wait to push them with a bigger amp. I use them for live sound for my metal band and they have gone far beyond my expectations. Worth twice their price. Great sound and price, solidly built, definitly worth checking out before buying something twice their price........

Bought these for our bar band and we have been very pleased. Good thump, crisp sound, nice looking. At 8 ohms you need a strong amp, but for the price you can't beat these guys! We play dance and hip-hop in between our sets and these babies HIT! Still new so not sure about reliability, but so far no problems.

Comments about Harbinger HX118S 18" Passive Subwoofer:

I sound checked the Harbinger HX118 sub against subs from other major manufacturers at twice the cost. These subs kick out great low end, but are also very musical. This sets them apart from the others and they are a great value. Harbinger makes their own drivers which is only done by a few speaker manufacturers today. They are also 8 ohm speakers which will allow you to daisy-chain them without taxing the amplifier too hard. Don't delay, buy these. You won't be sorry.
