Size, Weight, Price, Quality of Sound, Road worthiness. These 5 metrics are what most of us pros use in when deciding if we're going to commit hard-earned dollars for a new piece of PA gear. I've heard most, if not all, of the current products available for portable sound reinforcement. I'm completely sold on the EON 515xt. And averaging 6-8 gigs per month, I can't afford to be fooling around with any equipment that doesn't meet all of the requirments. I thought long and hard before committing to the XT. Very glad I did. I'm delighted with it.
With the advent of an 'aging rockers' segment of the Boomers demographic (I'm 60), a minor cunundrum has evolved, over time. Those of us who have been playing since Moses 'walked like an Egyptian' have a comparatively high set standards with regard to 'how good is good' when it comes to our PAs, and the sound they provide. On the other hand, none of us want to have to load in / load out one more lb. than we absolutely have to, in order to get that sound when we perform.

Sound reinforcement designers aren't dummies (mostly). Bose developed the L1 line specifically to address the need for 'less is more' - great sound, with small footprint.

Now JBL offers this amazing 32lb active (625 watt) enclosure, Crown-powered, with 3 input channels, each with its own volume. The unit can be stand-mounted, set on a chair or stool, or laid on the floor as a monitor. Master Low and High freq eq knobs provide some control over tone. The amp and woofer/high-freq drivers are well matched, and capable of pretty high sound pressure levels (132 db at 1 meter).
Appears to be bullet-proof. I've owned several JBL enclosures over the years - never had a problem. Already played my first gigs, and this unit sounds fantastic.
Can't imagine a better value exists out there, at the moment. Even the L1 compact costs more, without anywhere NEAR the power of this unit.

the the newest eon 515xt series in my opinion are the best but you are basically paying for the light weight design and technology. They do not hit with enough bass so you would definitely need bottoms jbl need to make a newer eon 518xt to go with these nice looking speakers. it is a huge improvement over its predecessor.

Comments about JBL EON 515XT 15" Powered PA Speaker:

I bought a pair of these about a year ago, right after they first came out. They replaced a pair of EON 15's (1st Generation). I play in a folky-to-classic rock trio that typically plays smaller venues, but in the summer we play some outdoor venues where good solid coverage and excellent sound are a must. The oftentimes acoustic nature of our material dictates a natural well-balanced speaker. Clarity and accuracy in the vocals are very important as we do a whole lot of harmony singing. In our setup, the speaker must also handle the output of a very punchy kick and occasionally help out the bass guitar. So far, all I can say is it sounds like us. That's high praise from a former recording engineer and continual sound fussy.

In the smaller venues, just one of these is plenty, and with only one, we can kind of point it a bit away from whoever is writing the check. They'll still get good, balanced sound and we can play a little bit louder ;-) outdoors we have yet to even clome close to pushing the EONs to their limit. That was a big problem that we encountered with the original EON Generation 1's. Problem solved.

The light weight, ample power and flexible connections with global tone control are all pluses. We drive them with a Mackie mixer, so we don't use the multiple inputs. But other than taming some weird room acoustics, we've never had to touch the EQ on the speaker or the mixer and get just clean honest sound that can carry a kick with a surprising amount of punch. And my 5'4" wife can easily pick both of them up and tote them if she has to.

If you need gobs of bowel-loosening bass at very high volumes, you might want to add subs, but for the huge majority of uses, you can skip all that.

Light wieght, gobs of power, rugged construction (I've used these steadily for a year and they still look and work great), and a very reasonable price compared to whet you'd need to go threough with power amps, crossovers, etc. etc. This is a no-brainer.

The only drawback I can see is that, if you have a weak link someplace else in your system, the EON will show it up for you.

Additional anecdote: We recently did a TV show taping where we had to send a single feed to the audio board, with no foldback or way to hear what we sounded like in the control room. I set up our usual rig, but added my miked guitar amp and the bass to the mix. Then I used one EON off to the side, out of the shot, to set up the mix going to the house, using the loop-though connection on the EON. It produced a very trustworthy mix that wound up sounding great in the control room and subsequently on TV. Any studio engineer will tell you that the most important quality of a studio monitor speaker is that it be able to create mixes that translate well to other systems and situations. Even though the EON is not really meant for that, it did the job in this situation and saved what could have been a mess otherwise.

You pay extra for the JBL name but you get what you pay for. Went through 2 Carvin PM15's that had similar specs but amp sections kept going out. Finally gave up on them and bought more expensive JBL. Sounds good and is loud. Use it for monitor for my Roland drums.

Just what I was looking for...

                By David Roberts

                from Bensalem, PA

Comments about JBL EON 515XT 15" Powered PA Speaker:

After a 4th floor walk-up gig carrying my older 47 lb. EONs, 4 passive JBL floor monitors and heavy Mackie amp, it was time to go lighter without sacrificing sound quality. Because of their light weight and good sound, these are the first PA speakers I ve owned that I ve hooked up in my basement to listen through between gigs. I use them in conjunction with a dbx DriveRack PX which smoothes the sound in that particular room, I then role off the highs somewhat (16K). I can listen to rock or classical through these and they sound like really good stereo speakers that can play REALLY LOUD. This is a high compliment coming from a recovering audiophile.
                8-)
I don t need the built-in mixer I use a 16 channel Yamaha but now that I have it, it gives me options for simple acoustic gigs that I didn t have before. I like that.
My 4 year old EONs just work dependable. These appear to be made at least as well if not better.I was willing to pay for lighter weight, higher max SPL, and good sound. Good value.

                FINALLY!!!!! A Great PA!

Comments about JBL EON 515XT 15" Powered PA Speaker:

I am a vocalist with a WIDE range. I need LOUD speakers with NO feedback. I have played on countless different PA systems....... never really happy, until I got this Puppy! All I gotta say is, you can't go wrong here! Excellent crisp highs, plenty of solid lows.....the first time I used it, plugged up my SM58, turned the volume to level 4, belted out some vocals, and had to turn it down! It sounded great! I then plugged in my Sennheiser e935 Mic, and was simply blown away by the clarity. That's just the beggining! You can plug 3 inputs to this speaker, allowing for multiple uses and setups. The BEST benefit is the 625 Watt built in power amp. Yea! 625 watts for ONE speaker! If you are sick of weak sound systems, or tired of messing up your vocals by trying to sing more loudly, GET THESE SPEAKERS! Great PA, lightweight, doubles as a personal monitor, even sits on the floor at an angle or on a PA stand! BRAVO JBL!!!!!! I love you guys!
