I also own Sonar 8.5 producer which is superb, but it has alot steeper learning curve. I use the Lexicon Lambda almost everyday now because of the simplicity of its controls, and save the Sonar for real big projects.
Midi,Mic,Line,Monitor inputs/outputs....barebones but very adequate for beginning to intermediate audio idea sketching/demo production. Cubase4 works fine and is even capable of some audio/video production. I run it on a pentium 4 HP pavillion with only 1 Gig of RAM and the processor is barely working on small 8-16 track projects. Mind you this is not a pro machine by any means, but it is quite well suited for anyone interested in getting into computer recording.
Build seems solid and all parts were in box when it arrived. Loaded software, plugged in unit and was recording, mixing and playing back in less than 30 minutes.
For the price whats not to like !

Okay, so the lambda has served me well for about four years now. When I first started, I was interested in only recording acoustic guitar, and vocals, maybe two to three tracks per song, max. And in this environment, the Lambda is really quite okay. But, once I got into recording more high quality stuff, it slowly lagged behind. This interface is simply not cut out to record songs that are going to have many tracks, and have many effects in them. If you want to, you'll have to adjust the buffer to where the lag in recording will be too much, and it will become unusable. The preamps are quite noisy, and after a while, the control pots will get scratchy and noisy as well. But, it is after all cheap.

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

i bought this mabye a year ago to lay down some basic recording. Now that i want to add more effects and do more serious mixing.. major latency issues.. you are better off getting the Tascam 122 0r 144. they are usb 2.0.... and yes it makes a big difference!!!!!

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

This device came with Cubase software. I cannot activate the software. Steinberg was supposed to send me an activation code but says I have no license. Musician's Friend won't let me exchange it because it is software. I have had good expierience dealing with MF in the past and will probably still deal with them. Just not for a while.

Good for guitar, but not much else.

By Gut Plucker

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

I've had this thing for about 2 years and well, it's been a real let down from the get go. I mainly got it to record guitar and keys, which it does fine. I recently acquired some mics and wow, what horrible pres. Noisy, and one of them didn't even work! I had to build my own pre to have any sort of gain control. The only way to get sufficient volume is to use a TS cable between the insert and line in to boost the levels to usable. But unfortunately when you do this, you also amplify all the noise present in this device. Not good for vocals or micing anything, but great for guitar or keys. The MIDI is okay, it gets the job done, but sometimes it ghost notes. You'd be better off getting something else for a little more money. Don't let the Lexicon name fool you, this is not the same quality of product as their more expensive effects units. Bottom line this is a cheap interface, and I don't mean the price.

A disappointment

By Shadow-PthZs

from Phila. USA

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

I have been using this to record in Cubase LE and as part of my audio out chain. It has given me numberous problems. After recording in Cubase, I have to unplug the USB cable and 'reset' the unit, or I will not be able to play back a .wav file of what I just recorded. Today it stopped playing back music files. I am tired of this finicky unit!

Avoid it like the plague

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

Pros: - Didn't fall apart yet- Comes with 48v phantom powerCons:- Sound sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't. Restarting the application sometimes helps.- When running multiple apps the sound quality gets heavily distorted and sounds like nails on a chalk board. I've had $5 sound cards that can function on multiple apps.- 48v phantom power has a mid-high frequency hum that is more than slightly audible.- Signal can't get loud enough. Mic is barely audible even at full volume. Tested on several mics.- Support? What's support?I've never had this many problems out of any single piece of hardware.

Lousy preamps/phantom power

By Bad Tux

from San Jose, CA

See all my reviews

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

I love the feature set which makes recording easy (no fiddling with things on the computer side, it's all controlled by actual physical knobs, and it has MIDI in/out too), but the preamps are noisy and don't do a good job of amplifying the inputs. Expect to need a mixer to drive the line inputs to get sufficient volume into your DAW, plugging your mikes into the XLR ports won't get you sufficient volume without maxing out the volumes, which in turn gives way too much noise with the noisy preamps. Also, the phantom power isn't actually 48v and won't do a good job of powering most condenser mikes. Again, need a mixer. I've finally managed to kill the preamps in mine after two years (forgot to reset the volume on my mixer down, it was set for going into a PA, and the magic smoke came out of the Lambda) and need to buy another product (it's not worth fixing this thing). I am *not* buying another Lambda, I'm going to buy something with better pre's.

It was going so well...

By Bwaffles

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

I've had this interface now for 3 years and one day I discovered a glaring problem: the 48V phantom power did not work. I bought a mic that required phantom power and the Lambda just wouldn't pick up the audio signal. Infuriating. Anyhow, aside from that, it's been an adequate interface. I still wish I had bought something that was more reliable- now I have to route my mic through this ancient mixing board that has phantom power and then back into the lambda. Very inefficient.

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

This interface is absolutely horrible. On any 64-bit operating system, it will skip and skip and skip. Even if you have a 32 bit operating system, dont buy this product. If you decide to ever upgrade your copmuter, you will be forced to also upgrade your interface.

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

I bought this a few years ago and have used it a lot for recording quick demos to send out to the band, but other than that, it's not useful. Tons of bleed through (if you're using a metronome function on your recording program, it will bleed into every track.) The preamps are noisy, and they clip incredibly easily. You could get around this by using a tube pre and running into the line inputs, but the line inputs have almost no signal strength until you turn them up so high that they start distorting.

basically, I'd never buy this one again. It's gotten me through ok, but like I said above, it's really only useful for quick demo's that don't have to sound good. If you're actually looking for something to do more professional recordings on a budget there are plenty of other options like the Focusrite Scarlet line.

I do have to say I like the Cubase platform and it worked fine on my Mac.

a disappointment

By Laura Todd

from Pennsylvania

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

I believe the poor drivers were responsible for this unit constantly arguing with my computer.
Inputs for Mic, Midi, line in and instrument.
This unit had some good features, but way too many problems. I had problems with static, a high-pitched hum, latency and mysterious crashes. I'm happy to finally be able to afford to replace it. I rated it a 3 because when it did work, it was fine.

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

At this price, I expected a poor quality recording, but NO! The Lexicon Lambda is an exceptional deal and easy enough for an idiot to install and use. The Cubase LE is straight forward recording software that I found instantly intuitive. Put your money in your MICROPHONES NOT into some over-hyped fire box that needs 1GB or 2GB RAM to run. Small computer? Go Lambda!

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

Over and over as I tried to get the drivers installed on my AMD64 machine. After the 6th or so attempt the crashing finally nailed one of my system files and I had to repair my windows installation.I looked on the Lexicon webpage for support, but there was NO troubleshooting guides at all. I can't rate this item because I couldn't get it to run unfortunately.

Best Deal For The Money

By Stopbears69

from Boston MA

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

I bought one of these almost a year ago now since it was the most full featured device I could find in the price range. Couple of problems with it tho, first of all that "high pitched buzzing" happens to me as well. Interestingly enough a good solid smack on the top of it solved that problem. It hasnt come back but wtf? Also the preamps straight up blow, youll definetly have to have an external preamp for a quality sound. Other than that it handles both my mic and line signals well, and I just started playing with my midi stuff and it seems to work with that no problem. One other complaint I have is about monitoring latency. If you are monitoring your record enabled tracks as well as your playback tracks there will be noticable latency. Cant expect too much from a USB device though. Other than those three things (latency, buzzing sound, preamps) its a solid, worthwhile investment for people with little to no money (like me!).

Cubase LE 4 Activation is a MESS

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

Great USB studio but not the Cubase LE 4 that comes with it. I bought it last week and have been trying to activate the cubase since I own it. I could creat an user, reg the software but couldn't activate it. The activation web page has been taken off and the Support Request From page as well. So.... my cubase will only work for a month and then that's it. Lexicon said this is not their business. Wish someone who also bought it recently would let me know how could he activate the software.

Great Interface

By Anonymous

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

Great recording interface! Would recommend to anyone. Love the peak LED's and line level inserts. Works great with Windows XP, USB 1.1 and my AKG condenser mic. For really great professional studio results, add a compressor line level source. Only complaint is that I wished the headphone jack was 1/4" instead of a 1/8".

Poor Quality

By OrionWitch

from Denver, CO

See all my reviews

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

This seemed like a good value when I bought it a year ago. The problem I've had with it is inconsistent noise and levels. Some days it works fine, and others I have to cycle the level knobs back and forth to eliminate the horrible noise. Also, I have recently been unable to get an equal L/R signal to record, not matter how I adjust the the levels. I've replaced all of the cables, and I've tried it in Cakewalk, Audition, and FruityLoops. Oh well, I guess it's time to find Vista drivers for my old, reliable SeaSound Soloist.

Comments about Lexicon Lambda USB Desktop Studio:

I've had this unit for over a year and have no problems with it. Works fine with what I use which is Logic Studio. I've never had a problem with it as I said, but might upgrade to something else soon. I would recommend it. Although I have seen that some other reviewers have had problems with it. I did have problems with it when I used the Cubase, but when switched to logic Studio, I never had a problem with it.
