OVERVIEW

Instant replay for your jams!

You can't plan for inspiration. It just happens. And in the time it takes to set up recording gear, the most inspired musical ideas can be lost forever.
Next time inspiration strikes, you can be prepared with the handy Line 6 BackTrack Recorder with microphone.

BackTrack Instant Replay Recorder ensures that your vocals as well as guitar licks, riffs, and songs will always be captured. Sitting with you and plugged into your instrument, this simple and sleek device is always listening and automatically recording every one of your revelations, epiphanies, and great musical ideas.

You never even need to press record, since BackTrack + Mic captures audio whenever it hears you play or sing. As a standalone recorder, the sensitive mic with automatic gain control will capture crystal-clear vocals or acoustic guitar. With a guitar plugged in, the quiet 1/4-inch input will capture a stunning signal.

BackTrack is super simple to use. After you play something brilliant, press the "Mark" button to mark that idea as special. Featuring a 1/4-inch output and 1/8-inch headphone output, BackTrack + Mic allows for easy instant reviewing of both marked and non-marked ideas.

Backtrack + Mic can capture up to 24 hours of audio. Saved as WAV files to a rugged and reliable 2-GB flash memory, the captured audio is easily transferred to a computer via USB 2.0 for storage or further recording, editing, or mixing. The internal battery, providing over 8 hours of life, can be recharged via the USB connection.

Featuring a classic and low-profile look, BackTrack + Mic is so small and lightweight that you might just forget you're carrying it (until you're incredibly thankful that you are).

I bought mine extremely cheap from someone who didn't like it for various reasons. His complaints included many of the same ones within the reviews here. The tips I've provided above would have overcome many of those issues. I can't stress enough that you ought to spend some quality time with this thing to get the best results. I would say that it applies as well to any portable digital recorder.
Oh yes, don't forget to read the manual!
OK, the user interface could stand to be more friendly, but once you get the hang of it (not too hard) it's easy. Read the manual. The "MARK" button is a good way to sort out the keepers from the rest, if you can remember to use it.

The hardest part is keeping track of what the various colors of the status light mean. Read the manual a few times until you get it down or, in my case, since I use the recorder infrequently I made a cheat sheet that slides under the belt clip.

Use the Backtrack Setup Utility to configure the recorder correctly for what you're trying to capture. This is VERY IMPORTANT. Read the manual. Proper setup will ensure that the recorder doesn't turn itself off during your quiet acoustic guitar passage. Plan ahead and set up accordingly. You may also enable forced capture for those spur of the moment occasions.

Don't forget to read the manual, you'll save yourself a few headaches. Make sure you download the BackTrack Users Manual (Rev C) if your printed manual is an earlier version. There have been important updates to the information.
It's made out of plastic, and is very light. Treat it accordingly and it will last you a while.
The sound quality I've captured has been very good so far in various settings. Proper placement of the unit is important for good captures. The mic seems to be somewhat directional, so get it pointed at and up close enough to your audio source. If you have the opportunity to experiment with this, take the time to do so. Too close=distortion and clipping, too far=weak and noisy.
It may be a bit overpriced for some as a new purchase. Look for a used one if possible.
It's about the size of a pack of smokes, so it can fit in your pocket. I find it handy to easily record gigs or jam sessions for later evaluation. I've had good results with it clipped on my guitar strap, which makes it easy to turn on/off or to hit that MARK button when I need to.

I bought this because I had great success with the sound, design, and durability of the Line 6 POD, but this recorder is one of the most disappointing pieces of equipment I've ever purchased. The design interface doesn't make sense and the quality is insulting. The recorder hesitates when you start playing and stops and restarts if you play a low passage. When recording a song or musical idea, the recorder slices the piece into numerous sections, thus you have to piece together all the sound files to hear something complete. It's made of cheap plastic and feels like a toy. The microphone screen rattles and buzzes, and the overall design concept just doesn't make sense. I've had it for two months now, and the belt clip already broke. The guitar jacks are stripped out. In theory, and how this is marketed, it may sound like a good idea, but it's not. It's a complete waste of money. I made a mistake by not sending it back immediately. I ended up buying a Tascam DP-004 for the same price and can't believe the difference. Buyer beware. Don't let the praise fool you.

My most important writing tool

By Teraya

from ATL

Comments about Line 6 BackTrack Instant Replay Recorder With Microphone:

This is probably my most valued and relied upon tool for writing guitar music. You just plug in and it records every time you play something. If you play something great, hit a button on the side and it is flagged and stored in a separate place, so your "good" tracks are easy to find later. I can't count the number of interesting ideas I've stumbled upon playing guitar prior to using this device, only to forget them before I got the chance to record and/or pencil down the ideas somewhere. So mostly I use this device like a voice memo recorder, just to quickly capture ideas (to be recorded using more proper/normal methods later on). Get the one with the mic built in and you won't be limited to just a plugged in guitar. Then you can capture a quick "sketch" of an idea for vocal bits, harmonies, or any manner of acoustic instruments. Even better, carry it around one day and use it to randomly record any interesting sounds for use later as samples. The battery life has been really good for me. I can't imagine not having this device, it's been so incredibly useful for me.

Lost money and time

By jcmills

from Dallas, TX

Comments about Line 6 BackTrack Instant Replay Recorder With Microphone:

I've owned two Backtracks, One failed and was replaced under warranty, the replacement failed after short time of use out of warranty. The Backtrack is complicated to operate, the labeling rubs off, lots of buttons, coded flashing colors. all those things can be lived with by someone who reads the manual often. My two were unstable, parts seem to not be available to consumers, repair seems not practical or easy. If you are in the market for a recording device and like the description of the Line6 Backtrack . I would say buy the Backtrack only if you can afford to replace it later with another brand of recorder without hardship or too much annoyance. But if you are on a ?shoestring? so to speak. I recommend you save your money till you can afford to buy one of the other brands of recorders that are offered by Music retailers, ( prices seem to be coming down) I lost my money, and a lot of time fooling with the Backtrack.. Buying the cheapest is not always the best value. Ouch!

Comments about Line 6 BackTrack Instant Replay Recorder With Microphone:

I won this from Line 6 as a contest winner. I really wasn't expecting much, but when I got it I used it to record a band I was playing with. I just set in my guitar case in the middle of the room and let it run. WOW! The recordings were really good quality. I would take it home and make a CD of the complete songs and problem areas and give it to everyone to listen to. It was a surprise to everyone how well it recorded. We used 3 electric guitars, bass, keyboard, drums and vocals. It wasn't a perfect mix, but the overall recording was really good to work with. We recorded some acoustic stuff, also and it was great. The only real issue with this thing is that it needs to run through a computer and you have to spend a little time sorting through the junk to get to the good stuff. However, once you use it a few times, that gets easier. Bigger files equal longer songs. We also had a list of the order of songs we rehearsed so I knew what was next in the list to look for.I probably wouldn't have bought this, but now that I have it, I would buy another one if it broke, just for the size and recording convenience and quality.I really like using mine.

Amazing Little Box

By GuitarGuy

Comments about Line 6 BackTrack Instant Replay Recorder With Microphone:

I have used my BackTrack with Microphone for over a year now. It is solid and easy to use. I record instrumental acoustic guitar tracks for my own pleasure and for friends & family. I just set the unit on a guitar stand near my chair, push the button and play away... The results are amazing. I record my practice sessions and listen to them over and over. It really helps when I have a new idea or am writing a new song. I have even produced a few CDs of music recorded completely on this little box - people are always surprised to see what I use to such good sound. I actually need a quieter room as this thing is very sensitive. Of course, if I were selling my music or trying to make a serious album, I would look for more professional equipment - but for what I do - this thing is great.

Review

Comments about Line 6 BackTrack Instant Replay Recorder With Microphone:

Nothing positive to say about this piece of equipment except that it records in 24-bit audio. The ad make it sound like a good idea to capture song ideas, but it's clunky and a weird system to use. It is cheaply made and better suited as a prize in a crackerjack box. Had to put a dab of superglue to stop the mic screen from rattling. Give me stop/start/play/record buttons anyday over this overpriced toy. When you play something low, it stops and then restarts. You get a ton of audio files to download to computer for one song idea. I should have bought just a plain digital recorder with a USB transfer cord.

Cool but not Perfect

By Baltimore Beach Man

from Baltimore, MD

Comments about Line 6 BackTrack Instant Replay Recorder With Microphone:

It's pretty good. The microphone recording, as noted elsewhere, is kinda dull sounding—even if you stick the thing right into the center of a guitar amp's speaker.

The auto record when plugged directly into the unit is hit or miss. It doesn't always "hear" that you are playing, even in the high sensitivity setting. Therefore it sometimes doesn't start recording or sometimes ends too soon.

It works great when you use the manual record feature! It's cool to be able to play your guitar and then play back the recording while playing along. Also VERY nice to be able to change the settings on the amp or even plug the BackTrack into a different amp to explore different sounds. Makes it easy to find the perfect tones.

Just as advertised. (What a concept!)

By james442

Comments about Line 6 BackTrack Instant Replay Recorder With Microphone:

Finally a product that does exactly what was promised. No oversell.....no undersell! I won't restate all the positives that are in all the other reviews, but there is one thing of importance that seems to be understated. I've always had difficulty EASILY recording a clean signal while playing with a "normal" setup (with effects, etc.) NO MORE! Put the backtrack in line before your stomp boxes/effects and play! Then import the raw signal from your pod to your DAW and you're ready to go. And yes, the quality of the recording really is THAT GOOD! HECK, I almost feel like I'm wasting my time here...just read the ad!

Comments about Line 6 BackTrack Instant Replay Recorder With Microphone:

I was really excited to get this, but when I finally set it up and tried it, the results were underwhelming. - Acoustic guitar with microphone is muddy bass-heavy- Acoustic/Electric guitar through jack is inaudible- It's a little annoying trying to set up the microphone gain going back and forth with the computer.- Microphone screen rattles back and forth+ The playback function is nice. I anticipate that will be handy for working out leads- Auto-record sensitivity and automatic track ending are worthless and tend to cut songs in half even when time between tracks is maxed out.+ recorded quality from the amp line out is good.

Comments about Line 6 BackTrack Instant Replay Recorder With Microphone:

I couldn't get the device to work at first. Then I found out that it doesn't charge when attached to a computer, only if used with a USB charging device. Once I got it charged up, it worked as described. Help line didn't diagnose problem, just said it seemed to be working properly. It may also need to be connected directly to a USB port for computer to read files. Manual said that hooking up the 1/4" output jack would disable the headphone output, but thankfully that wasn't the case. I wanted to be able to use the Backtrack as an in-ear monitor preamp, which it will, even when set to play-only mode. Just remember to unplug the input when using the device for playback through speakers. This is a unique device designed to aid musicians who compose using their instruments. You could do the same with a small digital recorder, but the Backtrack has some features to streamline the process. A digital recorder might be more flexible, but at the StupidDeal price, this was a bargain.

This little gem attachs to your guitar strap,it's always close and ready...the condenser mic is good quality and is sensitive enough to capture acoustic performances with reasonable balance between playing chords/melodies and singing along. Great for just jamming along and capturing some many lost ideas without a recording hookup, which takes too much time. The compact size and design just make it part of your instrument and it works great. I would not recommend the unit without the mic...it really doesn't add anything to one's ability to keep ideas well...but the one with the mic, yep that's the one to use and reasonably priced too..

The unit has done exactly what it is supposed to do and recordings sound good. Getting it to start and stop when you want it to takes some getting used to and some playing with the control panel. My biggest issue is that it does not pass sound through when off. There is no reason you shouldn't be able to leave it connected and play when you do not want it to function. Also, the mic and input recording at once would have been nice, but I was not expecting it. Had I paid full price, I would have expected more.
