I bought mine extremely cheap from someone who didn't like it for various reasons. His complaints included many of the same ones within the reviews here. The tips I've provided above would have overcome many of those issues. I can't stress enough that you ought to spend some quality time with this thing to get the best results. I would say that it applies as well to any portable digital recorder.
Oh yes, don't forget to read the manual!
OK, the user interface could stand to be more friendly, but once you get the hang of it (not too hard) it's easy. Read the manual. The "MARK" button is a good way to sort out the keepers from the rest, if you can remember to use it.
The hardest part is keeping track of what the various colors of the status light mean. Read the manual a few times until you get it down or, in my case, since I use the recorder infrequently I made a cheat sheet that slides under the belt clip.
Use the Backtrack Setup Utility to configure the recorder correctly for what you're trying to capture. This is VERY IMPORTANT. Read the manual. Proper setup will ensure that the recorder doesn't turn itself off during your quiet acoustic guitar passage. Plan ahead and set up accordingly. You may also enable forced capture for those spur of the moment occasions.
Don't forget to read the manual, you'll save yourself a few headaches. Make sure you download the BackTrack Users Manual (Rev C) if your printed manual is an earlier version. There have been important updates to the information.
It's made out of plastic, and is very light. Treat it accordingly and it will last you a while.
The sound quality I've captured has been very good so far in various settings. Proper placement of the unit is important for good captures. The mic seems to be somewhat directional, so get it pointed at and up close enough to your audio source. If you have the opportunity to experiment with this, take the time to do so. Too close=distortion and clipping, too far=weak and noisy.
It may be a bit overpriced for some as a new purchase. Look for a used one if possible.
It's about the size of a pack of smokes, so it can fit in your pocket. I find it handy to easily record gigs or jam sessions for later evaluation. I've had good results with it clipped on my guitar strap, which makes it easy to turn on/off or to hit that MARK button when I need to.

Nothing positive to say about this piece of equipment except that it records in 24-bit audio. The ad make it sound like a good idea to capture song ideas, but it's clunky and a weird system to use. It is cheaply made and better suited as a prize in a crackerjack box. Had to put a dab of superglue to stop the mic screen from rattling. Give me stop/start/play/record buttons anyday over this overpriced toy. When you play something low, it stops and then restarts. You get a ton of audio files to download to computer for one song idea. I should have bought just a plain digital recorder with a USB transfer cord.

You can't go wrong connecting it the several optional ways it offers. If you go on the Line6 website there is a nice little video on how to use it.

I couldn't get the device to work at first. Then I found out that it doesn't charge when attached to a computer, only if used with a USB charging device. Once I got it charged up, it worked as described. Help line didn't diagnose problem, just said it seemed to be working properly. It may also need to be connected directly to a USB port for computer to read files. Manual said that hooking up the 1/4" output jack would disable the headphone output, but thankfully that wasn't the case. I wanted to be able to use the Backtrack as an in-ear monitor preamp, which it will, even when set to play-only mode. Just remember to unplug the input when using the device for playback through speakers. This is a unique device designed to aid musicians who compose using their instruments. You could do the same with a small digital recorder, but the Backtrack has some features to streamline the process. A digital recorder might be more flexible, but at the StupidDeal price, this was a bargain.

This little gem attachs to your guitar strap,it's always close and ready...the condenser mic is good quality and is sensitive enough to capture acoustic performances with reasonable balance between playing chords/melodies and singing along. Great for just jamming along and capturing some many lost ideas without a recording hookup, which takes too much time. The compact size and design just make it part of your instrument and it works great. I would not recommend the unit without the mic...it really doesn't add anything to one's ability to keep ideas well...but the one with the mic, yep that's the one to use and reasonably priced too..

It's great for a pocket-size :re-playable memory", at 'acoustic' levels,..... drums etc cause some distortion (via internal mic I believe) but it's the 'writers friend' for lower volume 'capturing' and 'marking for easy recall', "and in the moment".

This item is so easy to use that it gets used. Starts and ends the songs without intervention. Saves to wav format which transfers easily to computer. Memory size is adequate for the longest sessions.
Very pleased with the way the microphone picks up my bass. I can hear all parts of the rehearsal. Helps improve my playing by showing me the good and bad.

The unit has done exactly what it is supposed to do and recordings sound good. Getting it to start and stop when you want it to takes some getting used to and some playing with the control panel. My biggest issue is that it does not pass sound through when off. There is no reason you shouldn't be able to leave it connected and play when you do not want it to function. Also, the mic and input recording at once would have been nice, but I was not expecting it. Had I paid full price, I would have expected more.
