OK, i had just purchased this unit. Took a while to install but once u get it running you'll be amazed. I specifically needed a unit with RCA ins and outs and this one filled the bill perfectly. At first there was a conflict with my desktops soundcard. All i did was set the latency to high and adjusted the parameters in increments of one which u will see in any of your softwares audio settings.Coz im using this usb audiophile with 3 recording softwares. (cakewalk, cubase and the free software that this unit came with). Over all set up and installion can be a breeze if u make the proper adjustments on any of your softwares audio settings. Now im able to record my band track by track without having to pay so much money to get in the studio. This product works well too with any mixer out there in the market.

M-Audio decided to make this device available for all systems that have USB. But instead of making it backward compliant, it's just backward. Therefore it only works at USB 1.0 specs. Consequently, you can only record or play back at 96khz, not both at the same time. Also I believe it only has ASIO 1.0 drivers which results in a lack of latency compensation when matching up audio and midi. Forget trying to use midi and vst instruments live. They'll be out of sync unless you put the latency at it's lowest setting, thereby chewing up your processor, especially as it's trying to stuff too much data into USB 1.0. However, if you want to use it as a straight record in, it has very good signal to noise, probably the best you'll find for the price.

No Direct Audio Monitoring

By Da Man-M88i7

When you put this device on your computer good luck with installing it. Initially you install the device without turning it on. The you turn it on and Windows (XP Home) Tries to install it again. This (of course) causes a hardare conflict. I happen to work with computers o I was able to get around that, but I was not able to get around the fact that you could plug a mixer, a Keyboard, or anything of the sort into the ANALOG IN (RCA or L/R Mono) and hear sound! The Response I got from their Tech Support afater 2 DAYS was "2496 Does not support direct hardware monitoring, you should upgrade to the Firewire Product!" I Upgraded to a NEW product by Tascam and never looked back!

M-Audio - great product, stupid employees

By digital junkie

from Saint Joseph, MO

This WOULD be a great product if M-Audio had written some mixer software to control it with. Unlike the PCI 2496, this soundcard does not come with a 'mixer' and so unless your applications output 24-bit sound (which 99% don't), you will be reduced to output sound of 16 bits and this sounds scratchy at low volumes. Tech support was most unhelpful, simply suggesting that I upgrade to the Firewire version which does come with a mixer. How helpful was that? Why not just write the appropriate software for this product so I can use it to its full potential? What a waste of a great product.

Works decently for Pro Audio Apps. .

By revbenboss

Like other users, I wish that there was an integrated mixer. Also, it does not install the ASIO and MIDI drivers properly unless you upgrade the drivers from the WEB and follow their install guide to a tee. Even then, it does not work all of the time (the driver install). However, it works great with Fruity Loops and Reason. There is a crackle with lower latency settings in Cubase.

Driver install broke MS-Windows.Required a complete erase and reinstall of MS-Windows to clean up the mess. The driver software is dangerous.

1/4 jacks are poorly mounted and are easy to break. Easy to install. Works great.

it works great. it was a bit hard to install, but once you do it works good with little or no latency. and the midi ins and outs are a good feature, as well.

Audiophile 2496

It snaps, crackles and pops when too many signals are handled at once (2 or more), high latency, and forgets its settings occasionally.

This is not Plug and Play

By gvchicago

from Naperville, IL

I want to start out by saying I love M-audio products, but this one was just plain doomed from the beginning. I have the MobilePre and it has been reliable for me so I thought I would try a step above by going with this. I just could not get it to work. I loaded the driver and updates from their website but the best I could get was playback. I could not hear the mix even after following step by step instructions and talking with customer support. I would steer clear from this product at all costs, I returned mine. Invest a little bit more and get a firewire interface with more I/O's. You'll get better sound and less hassle.
