I am a professional sound engineer. I have used this interface to record both in the studio, and at venues recording live bands. I carry it around in my rack, and it is connected to two ADA8000's for the added inputs and outputs.

MY favorite quality of this interface is how great the converters are. This thing has a great wordclock also. The Line Inputs completely bypass the Octane Preamps, so if you use an external high end preamp it does not get "Muddied" from the cheaper interface preamps.

The DSP control panel can be a pain in the butt for someone who is new, however. It is a little glitchy but overall, it works fine.

It is built very well, except for the knobs...they come off easily. They feature a nifty push/pull for using the PAD.

Absolutely great deal on these right now. I bought it for about the same used, while they have dropped in price recently.

When it works, it's great. When it doesn't....well...I can't be dead in the water at a live recording session.
Purchased the first Profire 2626 in March 2010. Less than 1 year later, the product developed problems. While connected/recognized by the computer, I would attempt to plug in headphones into input one. This would occationally put the 2626 into a "freeze up" condition. Every LED on the unit would light up simultainously, and it would lose connection with the computer. The only remedy was to shut down and re-boot. Doesn't work when doing live recordings! Sent in under warranty and replaced. Unit number 2......Unfortunately 13 month's after receiving this one (now OUT of warranty) the unit will lose connection with the computer while recording and playback. You never know when. I'm waiting to see what M-Audio will do about this, but I'm not expecting a lot. Confidence is crucial during a live recording situation to minimize my stress level! Number 3? Only if they give it to me...
When it works, it would be hard to beat considering the price, and the fact that I use ProTools.
There seems to be a big jump in price to the next desirable model. I like this price range for a "traveling" unit.

Great Product...

Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626:

I am currently saving up money to buy this piece of equipment. The guy who records my band uses it, and its truly amazing. However, if you are using Windows, it will not work as well. Windows is not efficient enough, and you will have problems. I also recommend only running Logic Pro or Pro Tools. This will give you the best results on a Mac and with proper DAW.

Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626:

Well, it works fine.... But if i wanted fine I would have bought an M-Box. The pres are not quality, only one headphone output works and clips very EASILY. I have this in my home studio and would not recomend this for any studio besides for pre production. The Pres are also very noisy.

Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626:

Pre-amps are very clean sounding. Better than the Presonus Digi FS. AD/DA converters are really nice. Great routing options. A plus, I have Pro Tools 7.4 just to exchange sessions with other studios. (Pro Tools is not that great IMO, I prefer Ableton 7)Worth the purchase.

The Profire 2626 is one of the best interfaces on the market today! Whether you are on a budget or not this interface is perfect because there are so many options as to what you can do. I personally own 2 of this interface and I have them linked together to have 16 inputs and I absolutely love them. Ive had them for about 3 years and have never had any issues whatsoever. Another awesome feature the profie offers are the Octane preamps. The sound quality on the octane preamps is awesome. If you are looking for a interface with good preamps so you dont have to buy any, definitely get this one!

If you run Windows, don't buy this unit. Lots of Driver issues on Windows 7. For me, everytime I playback a song- within 2min it starts playing the song all garbled. Requires you to turn off and on the unit. However, M-Audio will tell you this is a problem with Windows and to take it up with Microsoft (which is not the case).

I also expected since Avid/M-Audio are one now, that I'd have the best integration and I have the worst. It offers 192kb and yet it can only do 96kb in Protools. Comon.

I honestly would feel bad selling this unit to anyone, my 12yr old FirePod is better.

Profire 2626 and Windows 7 issues

        By Franco Gagiano

        from South Africa

        Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626:

Lots of you might have struggled to get this device working on your Win 7 machine. Most of the problems are caused by the type of firewire card you might be using. There is no problem with the device... it just needs speed, some firewire cards are slow. AKA... connectivity issues. Problems like the device doesnt stay connected to the DSP mixer, or connects but does not want to record in your DAW.... FIREWIRE CARD... Swop it out for something better. Struggled for two days straight to get it fixed... only to find out, it not the device, its the firewire card.
only reason im giving only 7 is because I havent checked out everything yet. But the pre amps on this baby is awesome!!!
The fact that it has 26 in and outs makes it truly a awesome product.
Well on sturdyness (if there is such a word) will only be proven over a few years. But on first glance the device looks rocksolid, ready for the road. As said above. The 26 channels is awesome and good quality for money

        Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626:

I feel like a sucker. The description is miss leading. You can not effectively use the 26 ins and 26 outs. You only get 18/18 into your "ProTools" DAW. Also unlike the 18/14 units you can NOT use the multiple channels with other DAW's like Vegas. AVOID THIS unless you want to run a 16 channel mixer into ProTools. The Octane preamps aren't all that good either and all the optional 1/4 ins don't use the preamps.

        Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626:

Had the M-Audio FW1814 and it worked like a charm. Sold it and saved a lot of money to buy this new one, since I needed the extra outputs. Drivers are a nightmare. I use Cubase 5, and a dell laptop, Win 7 64-bit, Core 2 Duo 9600, 8GB of Ram, 320 GB HD. After 10 to 20 minutes of working on Cubase, sound gets fuzzy. Sometimes it'll just mute completely. Whenever it wants to, it simply goes "invisible" as the pc won't recognize it. I reboot, turn pc and profire off and back on (profire first, of course) and nothing, only reinstallation of drivers will cure the problem, but back where I started with the fuzz. I did a little research and there's a lot of us having the same problem, lots of people complaining about bluescreens and random crashes on any OS from XP through Win7 64bit. M-Audio hasn't made new drivers since november of 2009. I'm planning on giving it back and getting a presonus or something, options are running pretty low right now with the profire.

This had been a decent interface and I liked it well after I initially got it setup. Initially I started off on windows and had to go through a lot of talks with support before finding out it was my computer's cheap firewire chipset. Once that was resolved I was pretty happy.

But recently they have not released new drivers for the OSX mavericks and give no indication of when or even if they ever plan to. Will not be buying any M-Audio products in the near future.

                Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626:

This interface is great. Extremely low latency, I was able to monitor my guitar through abelton and an amp simulation/effects rack with no perceived latency. You can expand it up to 26 i/o without buying more firewire interfaces using the 2 ADAT lines meaning you can use preamps. Also loving the 8 monitor mixes great for having bands in the studio (though I haven't had need of all of them yet).

When I first bought it I thought it had some issues with it but it turned out this was actually my computer power supply failing (it quit altogether a few weeks later) so the unit was functioning properly all along but this let me see what there support was like: helpful with prompt response time.

Very easy!!!8 pre amps can record a drum set and for the money you cant beat this.I never got a chance to use the midi or other outputs/inputs but you can add a lot more to this interface. Comments about M-Audio ProFire 2626:

I think every one else's review pretty much sums up the quality. However, one thing I do want to point out, since it was a shock to me, is that the 1/4" inputs 1-8 do NOT route through the preamps. Only the XLR inputs on 1-8.There are special "instrument" preamps on the front for ins 1 and 2 that WILL route a 1/4" connection to the preamp. Not a *huge* deal for me, but I was rather surprised when I went to record some low level "line in" instruments and couldn't adjust the pre-recorded input gain. Other then that, it's still an absolutely fantastic product. It's a little cumbersome to setup at first, due to the DSP mixer interfering with what I want (just a simple I/O) but it's perfect after setup. This is why I give a 4 instead of 5 on the features.

I've had this for about a year now. And I think its awesome. Tons of I/O for the price. Sounds great too! Some cons? Well, when using all 8 pres (like for drums) you will start to notice a little amp hiss. Its not terribly loud though, and I can usually notch it out with an EQ pretty easy. Also, I've always felt as though the knobs on the front feel really cheap and plastic. And for the chap who mentioned the thing about the headphones also controlled by master volume. Yes, this kinda sucks. But there are ways around this. I put my monitors on outputs 7-8 for this reason. then you can configure SWReturn 1-2 to go to outs 7-8. Set the master volume to controll outs 7-8. Then you can set physical outs 1-2 to either be SWReturns 1-2 also (like I did) this give you the same feed as the monitors but the main volume knob wont effect it. Or you can assign an other SWReturn so you can send a separate mix. (I did this for the second phone jack).

I am able to use all the 26/26 in the majority of DAWs (like Ableton)just not M-Powered ProTools.I have a ART TubeOpto8 running with it and its flawless, just be aware that you will get pop's and crackles if you are running other video/system intensive apps with it. Extremely low latency when running with a decent computer!I do recommend it especially linked with the ART. It will come down to figuring out the software. You may find "out" routing issues which maybe driver/software related. I'm still figuring it all out I guess. Can't beat the technology for the price.
