I use the Projectmix I/O with Pro Tools M-Powered on a Mac Pro, and on Windows with little to no problems. Any problems I have had were eventually all attributable to a pretty steep learning curve when I first got it.You really have to learn to work "with" this thing. It isn't necessarily as intuitive as running Cakewalk with a standard mixer, but learning how it works is well worth it. By the way, I used to work with Cakewalk, and had to buy the I/O in order to migrate to Pro Tools, but it works with both softwares. If you don't really like mixing on screens, and prefer the "tactile" experience of a mixer, this unit is great. Using Pro Tools (I don't know if this works on other software), it will record your mixing actions. The irony for me is that I'm so used to working on screen, I have to keep reminding myself to use the board controls instead. It doesn't replace all on screen tasks, but it replaces enough to make it very much more efficient to use it instead for those it will do, and it does all the most important ones. There is one caveat. It only shows eight tracks at a time, but if you have more than that in your mix, you can scroll through them. If your used to using a large pro board, it'll take some getting used to. To "live mix" a song with sixteen or more tracks takes quite a bit of speed. And, you have to get used to each slider changing which track it actually controls.I find it quite a fun challenge!I would recommend this to songwriters that like to mix their own stuff. I've had it now for a year, and love it!

I've had my ProjectMix I/O for a week, and still haven't had a chance to try its amazing features. The I/O's function, but the control surface is not communicating with the computer. M-Audio's support is terrible!!!! The Projectmix is not communicating with Pro Tools 8.03, and I've spent a total of 47 minutes on hold between 2 phone calls, and it is still not working. I'm hoping it is just a software/Snow Leopard Mac problem. I hope the other reviews are right, and the headaches will eventually pay off.

Not Perfect By Luck or design?

By 714music

Comments about M-Audio ProjectMix I/O:

I've used the I/O with XP and now windows 7 64bit environments for almost 3 years with mixed results. it works well enough overall but my Project Mix had a few issues: -the first channel never really worked on my unit even after taking it back to maudio for repair in Duarte, CA. the problem came back a few hours of use later.- headphone jacks never worked on my unit- techs told me this would cost lots to fix which was dissapointing- It appears to have some compatibility glitches with windows 7/mpowered pro tools v8.1 and i'm concerned that there are now updated drivers since 2009. I've run into issues with the device not responding on occasion in protools but for the most part it has been reliable by simply checking the knowledge base for a few minor issue resolutions. would i get it again? probably not.

Can't beat it.

By Steve-_gX5x

Comments about M-Audio ProjectMix I/O:

Before I say anything, I would like to make it clear that I use this as a control surface only, and have never tested the mic pre's.This unit does everything I would expect it to, and more. Finding a control surface that actually has motorized faders and automation is a difficult task to begin with, and luckily, although this is one of the cheapest ones you can buy, it is phenomenal. It is VERY easy to set up with Samplitude v11, and it doesn't even have a preset for it, so I imagine it is even easier to use with Pro Tools, Cubase, and Logic. It is very intuitive, and does not require much time to become acquainted with. Having the ability to change the function of every button and fader with the touch of a button via the presets certainly makes up for the lack of physical buttons. It is not very large, which makes it easy to take with you to an out-of-studio session, and it takes all of 10 seconds to hook up.The only negative to it is that there is no expansion possibilities (extra faders, etc.).A steal, do NOT pass this up.

Project Mix is Awesome

Comments about M-Audio ProjectMix I/O:

Use it for Pro tools 8.1 m powered. Its awesome to control midi, record 8 inputs seamlessly, control midi interfaces and plug ins, rout all my speakers, and use it for several DAWS for this price. All the producers i work with always want to come to my studio because of the versatility.

Comments about M-Audio ProjectMix I/O:

I use this control surface/ interface with logic. I had a little bit of trouble getting it going but after I got it going it worked like a charm. The faders work great and are fast.

Good control surface

By Guitarologist

from Manassas, VA

Comments about M-Audio ProjectMix I/O:

I use this with Pro Tools 7.3 and Logic Express 7.2.3. This control surface is better suited for Logic, I believe, as the shuttle wheel does not move the insertion cursor in Pro Tools. The mic pres are pretty good and overall it is a pretty good control surface. However, it does not always "zero" out the faders when you exit Pro Tools and still leaves some of them up, with the scribble strip still displaying the track names. Just a few minor little pet peeves, but overall, I am happy with it. I just wish that it would have all 4 modifier keys, like on the Digi002, but the pres are way better than on the Digi002.

Everything u'll ever need without having to go HD

By Rald

from NY

Comments about M-Audio ProjectMix I/O:

Simply wow. This allows you to do everything you could ever need to recording wise, unless you need to use more than 8 mics for drums (which is possible). The control surface features are amazing and work so smoothly with protools. The only complaint, is that the mic pres are a bit too hot, but even when it says its peaking, you don't hear the normal peaking sound. The best buy you could ever make.

Pads would be nice but you can get around it

By Firkinahsoul

from Marana, AZ

Comments about M-Audio ProjectMix I/O:

You can use the software/driver to bring the gain down and it works just fine. It would be nice to have a switch you can just flip though. Other than that it works great. Sounds good and it's nice having the automation features.

Its ok but.........

By J_dott

from Winnipeg

Comments about M-Audio ProjectMix I/O:

Let it be known that there are some issues with this device, for instance attempting to record a loud drummer is impossible unless outboard pads are bought (or adat light pipe preamp is used) as the mic pres are too hot even when the gain nobs are all the way down. But If you got the money to buy this and another Pre It would be great.
