OVERVIEW

Magnetically shielded 8" monitors with Kevlar drivers provide refined sound and clarity.

Recording professionals around the world trust M-Audio Studiophile reference monitors for exceptional sonic accuracy. The new Studiophile BX8a Deluxe system builds on this legacy with new waveguides and enhanced driver integration for greater high-frequency clarity and refined sound. The magnetically shielded monitors feature 8" curved Kevlar low-frequency drivers plus high-temperature voice coils and damped rubber surrounds for durability and fidelity. The 1-1/4" natural silk, waveguide-loaded tweeters deliver a high end that's both clear and easy on the ears. Custom-tuned crossovers distribute 130 watts of bi-amplified power for optimal frequency handling by each driver.

Deluxe edition
The Studiophile BX8a Deluxe monitors update the best-selling M-Audio BX8a system with a variety of enhancements. The new waveguide delivers a cleaner sound. Custom amplifier tuning enhances the integration between the high and low frequencies, delivering refined spectral balance and a smoother response. An elegant new industrial design completes the package.

Kevlar low-frequency drivers
To insure a lifetime of service, M-Audio constructed the BX8a monitor's 8" low-frequency driver from woven Kevlar. Kevlar's high mechanical and thermal resilience makes it ideal for use in speaker cones. M-Audio's engineers also created a curved conical design that improves room dispersion. High-damping reliable rubber surrounds provide percussive musical bass, and ensure that the cone reaches its optimal excursion for accurate reproduction. And M-Audio's high-temperature voice coils reduce power compression, guaranteeing that your monitors will deliver full performance hour after hour.

Silk-dome, waveguide-loaded, high-frequency drivers
M-Audio's high-frequency domes are made from natural silk to counter the high Q ringing that is inherent in the poorly crafted metallic materials often found in other monitors. In addition, M-Audio's new waveguides refine the high-frequency response. M-Audio's FerroFlow technology uses ferrofluid liquid cooling to dissipate heat for maximum efficiency and extended usage.

Bi-amplified efficiency
Active monitors have a distinct advantage over unpowered monitors because the built-in power amps are specially designed to work with the drivers and crossovers in a tuned system. Bi-amplification further refines the concept by dedicating separate power amps to the highs and lows. Combined with a finely tuned crossover, this design insures that both the high- and low-frequency drivers are asked to deliver only the frequencies they are most efficient at reproducing.

Rear-ported cabinet design
The Studiophile BX8a Deluxe monitor's cabinet is integrally designed with its other components for optimal performance - right down to rounded corners for reduced edge diffraction and superior imaging. Custom rear-port design audibly reduces the turbulence and resulting distortion caused by poorly designed ports.

Magnetic shielding
Unchecked, the electromagnetic waves emanating from your speakers can wreak havoc with your computer's video monitor or a nearby TV. The BX8a Deluxe is magnetically shielded so that all of your electronic equipment can coexist without interference.

I am very happy with these speakers and would recommend them to anyone and I would also recommend purchasing from Musicians Friend

I could almost rate these speakers a 'ten,' but I held off doing so because of the volume controls being on the rear of the speakers, my having only owned them for five days, and I'm sure there can always be something better.
I recently purchased the m-audio BX8a monitors from Musicians Friend. I've been using them in my home studio for five days now. I am a keyboard player and I appreciate the lows that the eight inch speakers provide as well as the highs from the tweeter. These monitors have built in amplification in EACH speaker and they easily are attached to my midi interface to provide superior and realistic sound. Playback of my mixes sound fantastic! There are two types of inputs in the back of each monitor along with an on/off switch on each monitor. Although not a deal breaker, it would have been better to have the on/off switch on the front of each speaker to be easily accessible. And it would have been nice to have some equilization as found on the higher end monitors, but that would have likely driven up prices.
So far, these monitors sound great. Some reviewers have complained of a slight buzz coming from their tweeters. My monitors, so far, have not exhibited any such buzz and are totally quiet when there is no sound being played through them. The speakers seem to have a quality construction and are fairly large and heavy (compared to what I previously used), but they are not too large or heavy. I am glad I purchased the BX8a monitors over the smaller five inch version because of the bass quality that comes from the eight inch speakers. I feel that if the BX5a were used, one might need to purchase an expensive sub woofer to
When I began my search for new monitor speakers, I did not realize how pricy many are. The m-audio monitors were reasonably priced at Musicians Friend for me. I was somewhat hesitant purchasing them due to previous reviews, but took a chance especially because of Musicians Friend's 45 day satisfaction guarantee. And so far, I am very please with the purchase as the speakers sound and work great for my applications.

These speakers look and sound Awesome. However,
The QUALITY IS HORRIBLE. They have so many problems with these speakers. I have sent mine in 3 times to be repaired and its the same issue every time. The crossover in the speaker goes out all the time. I looked on the website and there forums on there and LOTS of people were having trouble with these speakers. I have bought other stuff from them and the quality of that stuff is terrible 2. I would not buy anything from M-audio there stuff looks good and sounds good, but you are gonna have a massive headache trying to keep the stuff working. I could understand if these were being transported alot and used every night at gigs but there studio monitors they sit on a desk and never move. M-Audio uses cheap parts in my opinion. Oh also it takes 3 hours to get ahold of the repairs department to get them repaired.

M-Audio...Never, ever again

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX8a Deluxe Active Monitors:

Thank you for reading the above.
These are some really attractive, seemingly well constructed monitors.
And they do sound nice.
The first feature you see out of the box is the annoying, large, red paper sticker stuck to the front of each monitor, bragging about their new features. (Others have described their affection for the person who decided to throw in this unwelcome bonus.) They do not peel off easily at all, so you're forced to make one of three choices; 1. live with this pair of ugly stickers, 2. painstakingly scrape them off to reveal the gummy residue, or 3. use some harsh chemical adhesive remover on your expensive new speaks. Always looking for solutions, I guess a fourth option would be to slap a (political statement of your choice) sticker over them. I suppose that might work for some.
More importantly, The next feature you might notice is the attractive blue LED on the front of each monitor. In my case, this was the first thing to go on the blink...pardon the expression, but one of them started to intermittently dim and brighten with no obvious cause. I switched cords and checked connections and the problem continued. Uncertain if this heralds a reliability issue, I made arrangements to send it back today (more about that later), and now the other monitor is doing it too.
Awesome.
The above should suffice, but it is a quality issue, so I'll paraphrase here:
The blue power LED on the front of each monitor was started to intermittently dim and brighten with no obvious cause. I switched cords and checked connections and the problem continued. Uncertain if this heralds a reliability issue, I made arrangements to send it back today (more about that later), and now the other monitor is doing it too.
I haven't noticed any degradation to the sound quality, which, I'll add in fairness, I'm pretty happy with.
Reading other reviews (I strongly advise this), it appears that problems are common with these monitors. It appears that problems getting AVID to honor their warranties are common as well.
To me, there is no value in a gamble unless I'm playing nickel slots.
In this case, there is no chance of winning. There is only a chance that you will get what you paid several hundred dollars for.

Even more problematic is any company that actively avoids honoring their warranty.
Before you buy anything (M-Audio in this case):
Go to their website and pretend you need to warranty a new product. See

M-AUDIO BX8a MONITORS

By Andrew Camarda

from Florida

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX8a Deluxe Active Monitors:

I record using a Roland VS2000cd and Overall I can not say anything bad about these monitors during playback and mixing. The Bass is strong but thats what I like, the ability to handle it as required. The 8 inch woofs handle the Lofreq's very well. The Highs are clear and the mids are ok. Vocals sound good, guitars, percussion, keyboards, orchestra, synth, piano, all sound good to me.
Features are very good putting into account the amount paid for the new pair. A Front or Front Side Power Toggle Switch would be a feature I would incorporate if I was designing the next model. Also RCA inputs would of been a usable option in my hookup. But again no big deal, I just use a rca to a 1/4 adapter.
Quality and construction seem to be top notch from the outside. I have not taken them apart yet to look at the guts. My guess is the internals are your usual Asian electronics design. The production standards are basically the same from location to location in that sector of the world. One can only hope a solder does not seperate or a cap pop during vibration while playing jams. But after 3 months so far so good, no complaints here.
Excellent for the price paid.

They are a bit colored

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX8a Deluxe Active Monitors:

These are great speakers, but not for mixing, everything sounds good on them so when you take your mix somewhere else and listen to it, nothing will translate, the bass response in these is super colored making them very difficult to mix on when you constantly have to guess where to put your low end. Great for listening, not for mixing.

These sound so good its hard to believe the price!I only have 2 complaints..1. The power switch is on the back and hard to reach2. They put these stupid red stickers on the front of the speakers advertising the new features and they do not come off easy. What a mess. So stupid!

Great value, good sound

By steve Wedemeyer

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX8a Deluxe Active Monitors:

I purchased these knowing they are not top-line speakers but I've been pleasantly surprised so far at the quality and cleanliness of the sound they produce. If you don't have a big budget, these are the perfect monitors for your home studio.
Everything I needed to easily connect, position and hear what I need to edit in a small home studio setup.
Can't measure longevity yet, but I don't beat my equipment so expect a long life. Seem very well constructed and solidly built.
I couldn't afford not to purchase for the price. I did my research and feel I got a really good deal.

Junk

By STVS

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX8a Deluxe Active Monitors:

I bought a pair of these and had to take them back for a new swap 3 times. Finally got a working pair then one monitor quit the next day. The volume knob on one was very tight while the other very loose as well. Shows the time and quality of work put into these. Not much. They sound amazing when working for the price. Just good luck finding even a new pair that work or will continue to work.

Problems right out of the box

By Ryan Duke

from Ohio

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX8a Deluxe Active Monitors:

I can't give anything a decent rating when they were malfuntioning right out of the box.
They sound good.
Bouth these a sale. $199 for the pair which is quite a deal since it's normall $300 more. I don't recommend these. I've never bouth anything that had issues imediately. Plugged them in and there was a very noticable hum/buzz comming from them. I think it's the cicuit board, not sure as I am don't know much about that kind of thing. I've read other reviews with the same and many more issues. I would never reccomend M-audio to anyone. I did get a Keystation a few years back that's done great though. They seem to have a reputation for things malfuntioning. I wish I researched these more. I am usually very thorough when buying anything. Ah, well. I can probleby sell them for more than I paid if they don't totally crap out on me. I also didn't even try them out till after the 45 day return policy. My mistake. The sound is pretty clear from what I can tell(not an expert), an imprvement from what I had. The hum is quite annoying and it's hard not to hear it all the time.
Good for getting them on sale.

Great Sound, Horrible Reliability

By iboughtjunk :(

from CA

Comments about M-Audio Studiophile BX8a Deluxe Active Monitors:

These speakers sound great. After having them for two months, one of them started having signifigant issues and is useless. Horrible crackling and popping and a marked pop when it's turned off, even with the volume all the way down. They were never turned up past half way and have very little time on them. M-Audio expects me to pay the shipping on a 26lb speaker back to them to have it repaired. I've read other reviews with people sending theirs back two and three times and still have it break again, so obviously their repair department is as bad as their QC and Tech Support (which is horrible). I also have a Project Mix that has issues and software problems and M-Audio dropped the ball on all of that as well. I will not purchase another M-Audio product. At about $30 a pop (the cheapest, slowest option I have), to ship the speaker back 5 times to an inept repair department, I will just cut my loss and get something reliable from a better company.
