I haven't had the DX4 monitors very long, but so far, I'm impressed with their performance for the price. I had to return a pair of of M-Audio Studiophile 4 monitors (DX4 was their replacement). I applied power to the Studiophile 4's, and all that I received was an electrical pop...and they were dead (Fuse?). The reason I bring this up is that the DX4 is their replacement and has the same design. I believe that M-Audio needs to design their monitors with circuit breakers (with an external reset button) instead of fuses that are only accessible by opening the cabinet. One could just reset the circuit breaker instead of returning them...or you could open the box to replace the fuse(s)and void your warranty. One other issue I have is the speaker wire supplied is too short by about a foot or two. I think that M-Audio has excellent equipment, and hope that their people read this review (I do have extensive experience in product development) and consider my constructive criticism to improve the design in this product.

At first I thought that these monitors would be an inexpensive way for me to improve my monitoring. I will admit that it is handy to have both RCA and TRS on the same powered monitor pair. However, I don't recommend these monitors to anyone serious about mixing. The bass is punchy, but not deep and seems the thin. The mid range is decent up to about 8kHz or so, but the highs sound terrible on these. My suggestion is to just save your money for better powered monitors. KRKs and Yamahas make these look like toys and are a far better value.

Good for listening, not for mixing.

I own it for about two years. They're loud enough even too loud sometimes. The sound is clean and nice; however, they're not the best for mixing. I always need the help of my headphones to check the lows to see if its clean or distorted. I can still mix with them but I always need the help of my headphones.

Have been great as a second set of moniotrs

I've owned these monitors for about 15 months.I've recommended these monitors to a lot of people. I didn't expect much for monitors costing so little, they're loud, can reach the lower registers well for their size, they sound very good for their price. Not super accurate, but reasonably accurate. I use them half the time along with my Mackie Hr24's. I felt that I got a lot more for the money than I expected. I think for the price they are pretty awesome,.

        blah!

Bought these for my first set of monitors in my home studio. Bad idea, not very accurate. The first set I bought lasted about, oh I'd say an HOUR! Returned them for new ones, so far so good. Volume knob sucks, keeps crackling every time you adjust, no matter how many times they're cleaned. SAVE YOUR MONEY!

M AUDIO STUDIOPHILE DX4 POWERED MONITORS

        By Anonymous

These monitors provide a nice coloration to your commercially bought music,as for mixing however they don't provide the best translated mixes. These monitors leave you to do too much judging in terms of frequencies.Buy a system that's more renown for good mixes if your looking for mixing monitors.

        Garbage

        By Cole 13

These sound good for a few weeks.......then they will distort. Only one is powered and the internal fuse system needs to be changed. Save your money to get something better. M-audio is sub par when it comes to monitors.

        the reason for ears

        By Johnny-9Bf4Q

These little babies are neat to have in the studio. Very acurate, clear, and clean. When you mix, you mix low first and then you adjust as you go; that's real engineering. You probably want your music to blaze and boom loudly and that's alright, but these are made for mixing and engineering, and not for playing at a party. That's what PA speakers and home stereo systems are for. (These to mix, your car audio to boom.)

M-Audio Studiophile DX4 Powered Monitors Pair

        By Igloo/Iguana

These are very decent monitors. Place the back of the monitors closer to the wall for the bass to start pounding.I abused my monitors, and they can take ALOT of abuse! I need to replace one of the 4" woofers now (oops). These monitors really don't need to be cranked so loud.My only complaint is: I wish these monitors were both powered.

        Not a good investment

        By symphonyinavacuum

        from Sacramento, CA

I purchased these less than six months ago to monitor my recordings I did in GarageBand on my Mac Mini with a Firepod. They sounded pretty good for a month or so, then they started distorting the low end awfully. Today I turned them on and they lost power and now do not work AT ALL. Completely useless. I say save your money until you can afford something else unless you're willing to spend money on something that's going to be completely useleess in a few months.
