I got one of these in a trade and it sat for almost a year. I had a full PA for my band and a small but full recording outfit but all made up of other makes. I used this 1604 for the first time when I had come back from the road and my gear hadn't come home by that time. I broke this mixer and s few of the Mackie 1400i amps that I had recieved in the same trade before and put together a small rig to do me till I got my regular rig back. I was really surprised by the quietness of the system when I powered it up. First I thought that there was no power on but when I walked around the rig I saw every appropreate lights on. I started up some music that had some great tracks to it and turned up the rig. WOW!!! I couldn't believe the overhead power. It really pumped out the jams almost like my regular rig but with a little less amperage. It really filled the whole lot where we were to do our shows that weekend. It was a full 10acre farm land that some friends had promoted a show in.The system had no problems what-so-ever all weekend long. Whether it was my band or a simi-national act that came thru on both days. I was talking to one of their sound guys from one of the bands and we were talking about equipment and what they used out on the road. Of course they used some major equipment like my other rig had but they were all taken back and surprised at how the system sounded for the weekend. This talk was on the last day. A Sunday. This guy was there for two of the days and nights and he ended up writing down all that I had put together in the rig for that show and the settings that I had ended up with. The two things that we really talked about the most wat how clear, bright and tight the system was and how there was NO hissing during the breaks. I love these mixers and amps. Mackie makes some really great gear and for the money a working man/band can't go wrong...

I bought one of these at a local music store before I became a dedicated online shopper. After 2 days of use the entire left side output from all outputs would cut out when the volume was at a lower level. I exchanged it, and when I brought the new one home I noticed some of the solo buttons would not stay down.I went back to the music store, and exchanged it again. That mixer lasted a year before it started crackling on almost every knob when turning them for slight ajustment. After the mixers ctr room phones knob went out, I bought another one. That one I didn't have to return and worked well for sometime, but now the ctr room level knob is crackly and it's hard to monitor at extremely quiet levels. Not that great for the studio, not a tank.

    Typicall of Mackie- cheap boards

    By Mary St.Clair

    from Fredericktown,Ohio

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO Mixer:

I've had very bad experiences with the DFX and CFX mixers: they're simply worthelss JUNK ! Preamps being unaceptebly noisy, main and channel faders cracking and loosing signal.I was looking at these as a possiability for studio, since these are a higher end product compared to the others I mentioned. BUT, from these reviews and my personall experience, I can say that Mackie boards = crap, and crap = Mackie boards

    not worth the money

    By Mike-ZleH9

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO Mixer:

I've owned a pair of 1604 VLZ Pros and 4 1202s and every last one has failed in some significant way within 2 years. Usually, it's the headphone jack first, followed by crackling in the channel faders, mute switch and finally, outright signal failure. the sound ok when they're new and have plenty of features, like direct outs and better bussing and monitoring options than other mixers in the size and price range, but you end losing in the long run with repairs and replacements. Frustrating. I used to be a ackie fan, but I'm about to replace my last one, a 1604 with a Yamaha, which has about the same, with half the cost and twice the life span.

    Try again Mackie!

    By Brad-6D6sS

    from Waco, TX

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO Mixer:

Ribbon cables failed during a performance. Lost the mains. Quoted $400-$500 to repair. I bought a new board rather than pay for repairs which may or may not solve the problem. Even if the board was repaired I would be afraid to use it for fear it would fail. I recommend going with another brand.

    My older 1604 is Great

    By 16Strings

    from Olympia, WA

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO Mixer:

I bought my 1604 VLZ Pro when they introduced the new preamps back in about 1999. I used it for live performances for a few years, and then turned it into a recording mixer. It has worked great. I think mine is one of the last American made Mackie mixers. They started importing them to bring the prices down and stay competitive. Based on the what I have heard, it sounds like the imports are not as reliable. I love the flexible routing options and the detailed control over signal flow. Sometimes it gets a little tricky. You may think it isn't working, but it is just a button that needs to be pushed. I do have one complaint, and it seems to be true with all Mackie preamps. If you turn the gain up past 12:00 o'clock they get noisy. I have had the same problem on a bigger 24 channel Mackie board. If you can get one of the older American made boards, they are rock solid. This is the board that everyone else copies, so you know it must be good.

    The old one was better

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO Mixer:

I used this mixer a few times for studio work and was disappointed. It gave out on the right channel three or four times, ruining multiple good takes. I have also used the Mackie mixer that was replaced by this one in their catalog, which worked absolutely flawlessly. It looked almost exactly the same as this one, except the dials differed in color. I'm not sure what Mackie did, but they must have reverse engineered this product to reduce the price and I hope they fix it soon.

    I Agree!

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO Mixer:

Mackie should give all our money back. I wrestled with this for sometime, even though I liked all the features it became a nightmare for a small studio. Going silent on the left side including all my auxs.

    Skepticle to buy another one

    By Anonymous

    from Undisclosed

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO Mixer:

When I purchased the Mackie CR1604-VLZ I was very happy with the features at such a reasonable price. Three years later however, I stated to experience problems with the four sub out and stereo main faders. The signal would intermittently go weak or disappear but suddenly come back by raising or lowering the fader. I use the mixer exclusively for mixing/recording now and am very disappointing when you have to tell someone to redo their parts because of signal loss. I also own a Mackie self powered 808S FR portable mixer with no glitches and has been a rugged, reliable piece of equipment. I do hope Mackie has addressed and fixed the problems with the 1604-VLZ and that the new VLZ-3 series are not old problems in a new shell!

    Quality An Issue

    By Beatbrat

    from Santa Barbara, CA

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO Mixer:

Had the mixer for 7 years. Only used it for vocals. After 2 years the right channel would go out after singing a high note, then would come back in. Found that the seating or ribbon on that channel went out. So I went mono and used the left channel and it worked till this New Years Eve gig, then that started popping out. I think to replace the parts would cost around $30.00 but you'll be spending a couple of hours taking it apart and putting it back in. Best bet is to buy a different model. No wonder several popular bands adamently request no Mackie equipment in their riders when they perform live.

    Great Studio Mixer

    By Pianoman5150

    from St Paul, MN

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO Mixer:

I have 2...one for the studio and one for the road. The Studio mixer is great but keep it off of the road unless you have a well-padded mixer case. I have had it cut in and out (mains and channels) for a long time...I thought it was my eq so replaced that, but it's the ribbon cables inside that go bad. Repair guy wants 450 bucks to repair the ribbons. Wierd. Worked great for about 2 years then trouble started. I want another one but am a bit nervous now.
