Emergency replacement mixer

By Stephen Mitchell

from California

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ3 Premium 16-Channel/4-Bus Compact Mixer:

I think this is a very good mixer. It has a lot of features I don't care about because I do not do home recordings and I do not have lots of effects on my live music. Features I could use that this mixer does NOT have is more than two possible monitor mixes and no xlr outputs (not even 2 on the R/L mains).
The Mackie 1604 VLZ3 mixer straddles the line between a small studio mixer and a small/medium venue live mixer. It is heavy, but that usually equates to quality in my experience, unless they are using a cast iron frame.

I currently am using a Peavey 16 channel mixer that is starting to show problems after 10 years of constant use and sometimes in heat over 100F. It has xlr outputs on the right/left and mono main outs and the 2 monitor outs. If I had not had such bad luck with so many of Peavey's other products, I would try to get another mixer just like it.

Why Mackie does not offer a mixer with the same features as this old Peavey given that all Mackie's powered speakers use xlr connectors exclusively, is beyond dumb to me. So be sure to buy some male 1/4 inch phone plug X female xlr cables for any outs to powered speakers.

I did not find a manual in the box. You will need one to use this mixer! LOTS of buttons on this baby. You miss one button in the wrong position and there may be no output! Mackie has some very specific meanings to some terms commonly used with other mixers that could impact the performance of the mixer. They have a nice summary of channel setup in the manual I downloaded from the internet. If you memorize it, you are halfway there with this unit.

It would be nice if Mackie provided the "pre-send" option on more of the aux outs to increase the potential monitor sends to more than 2.
This thing appears rock solid. All the faders are very smooth operating as well as the pots. All the switches work, the power cable is heavier than I have seen on some guitar amplifiers. I have not used it live yet. I tend to run electronic items like this for a couple days at the house to burn them in and uncover any infant mortality issues that may wreck a gig later. So far, so good.
In my particular application, live using active monitor and house speakers, sometimes at the end of LONG mic (signal) cables, I cannot use this mixer out of the box without buying some extra specialized cables, and even then, I don't like having extra connectors in my signal chain. So as nice as this mixer is, it does not seem like it is designed to go with the active speakers mackie has also designed, and of which I have bought so many. But no other mixer appears to have xlr outputs either at this time so maybe I am the one that is totally clueless here.

Old VLZ-PRO is better

By Jeff-FxedL

from Southern California

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ3 Premium 16-Channel/4-Bus Compact Mixer:

The EQ isn't as good as the VLZ-Pro, it sounds a bit weaker. The build strength on the VLZ3 is MUCH lower. The one I got had the roto-pod bent, and although the board tested out ok on install, a week later, I was called back to look at the mixer. It had to be replaced. The replacement is working fine. Since Mackie was bought out by LOUD, their products have gone downhill.

A little frustrated

By Snotjello

from St. Louis, Missouri

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ3 Premium 16-Channel/4-Bus Compact Mixer:

There's really not much more that can be said about the undeniable quality of a Mackie analog mixer. A bit overpriced, I think, so I gave the Mackie 1604-VLZ3 a low "value" rating. My frustration came when, after paying though the nose for the mixer and being excited about the rotating I/O panel feature that their own specs say offers "three configurations", I found out that you still have to buy a pricey accessory to have the I/Os on the face of the mixer.Be aware of this and order the accessory when you buy the mixer so you don't have to wait longer.

A step backwards?

By Anonymous

from Undisclosed

Comments about Mackie 1604-VLZ3 Premium 16-Channel/4-Bus Compact Mixer:

I have no idea why this mixer doesn't have XLR outputs. None. At all. Even the entry-level mixers by Mackie have XLR outs. The old VLZ-PRO is built better, and it's cheaper now that these are out. Buy an old VLZ-PRO and be happy forever.
