The MXL 990 USB Stereo Condenser Microphone has an extremely smooth, natural sound quality. Featuring twin 20 mm gold sputtered capsules this pressure-gradient stereo condenser microphone has a 20 Hz-20 kHz frequency response. The 990 USB also has a 3-position, switchable attenuation pad with settings for Hi (0 dB), Medium (-5 dB), and Lo (-10 dB), making it easy to configure the microphone to virtually any sound source. The digital section of the microphone features a 16-bit Delta Sigma A/D converter with sampling rates of 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz. A heavy-duty wire mesh grill with an integrated pop filter protects the instrument's capsule, and an LED activity light aids users in properly orienting the microphone toward the sound source.
Based upon the MXL 990--a top-selling studio condenser microphone--the MXL 990 USB Stereo Condenser Mic supports USB 1.1 and 2.0, and is a plug and play device for both Windows and Macintosh. MXL 990 USB Stereo Condenser Microphone: The requirement was for outstanding voice recording for web based videos and podcasts. Tried to install the MXL 990 USB on two computers, XP and Vista, neither worked. Tech Support at MXL said not to use their drivers, but to use Audacity. Mildly works, but there is no software control over gain, which is the reason for buying a non-preamp mic. Avoid the MXL USB Mic. I looked all over for a driver, there are none, even though the ad says it exists, in fact MXL doesn't have any downloads for drivers on their site. After wasting a few weeks on this, I bought a pre-amp and condenser mic.

I use the MXL 990 USB Stereo Condenser Microphone to record guitar and vocals on one track using free audacity software. It's a big step up from the inexpensive dynamic mic I had been using. Excellent quality, everything you need in one compact kit, reasonable price. Gives you a wonderful natural sound. Great for the musician who wants good quality without spending a ton of money or time buying and learning to use a home studio.

I use the MXL 990 USB stereo condenser microphone to record vocals with classical acoustic guitar accompaniment on one track. I use audacity software. The only adjustments I have to worry about are where to place the mic to pick up the balance I want between voice and guitar and how to set the volume inputs. I wanted a system that was simple, inexpensive, easy to use, and high quality. This is it - gives a wonderful natural sound with stereo depth and condenser quality with no need to spend a lot of time and money buying a lot of equipment and figuring out how to use it. The only other feature you could want would be a shock mount. This is for the musician, not the amateur recording engineer which is why you don't see many reviews!

I bought the MXL 990 USB stereo condenser mic because I wanted a good quality recording system without a big investment in set-up time, editing time, multiple pieces of equipment and money. I just adjust the height to give me the proper balance between acoustic guitar and vocal and record both on one track using audacity software. The sound you put in is the sound you get out. USB ease, condenser quality, stereo depth, a sturdy protective case, desktop mic stand and adapter - the only thing you could add would be a shock mount. MXL must have designed this mic for people like me!
