OVERVIEW

Application-specific condenser mic with optimized EQ curve to record electric guitars with punch and presence.

The Guitar Cube Pro is identical to MXL's Drum Cube Pro (see H74956), but comes with a chrome finish and EQ curve optimized for electric guitar recording. The Guitar Cube Pro is the perfect solution for capturing or recording guitars on stage, but also vocals too. The Guitar Cube Pro provides a 6-micron gold sputtered diaphragm and a 20Hz-20kHz frequency range. Placement near a stack is made possible thanks to its 140dB SPL range and ability to handle the heaviest metal or rock music. The small design of the Guitar Cube Pro allows for tight placement on stage or in the studio. Each microphone comes with hardmount clip and pouch.

* Requires 48-volt phantom power to operate.

I purchased one when it was on the Stupid Deal of the Day. I should have purchased two but that is hind sight. So when it went on sale I jumped on it and purchased the second one. As I stated in my last review it is similar in sound to a Shure 57 with a little more clarity, definition and attack. It has a good tight bottom end with very little coloration. The Mic is chromed out and looks great. It comes with a microfiber cloth to remove the finger prints. It is kind of heavy for a mic. At just under a pound suspending it from a mic stand with a boom, the boom length and the stands base must be taken into account. Most stands will handle it if the boom length is not to long. It comes in a foam liner in the box. It does require phantom power. Both my mixing board and my audio interface can supply that, so no problem for me. I bought both of mine on Stupid Deal of the Day, so for the price it was a great buy. I read reviews stating no output or low sound. This is a true Condenser Mic. It requires 48v phantom power to work. Without the power it has very little or no output. With phantom power it is hotter than a dynamic mic. You also must use a THREE wire balanced Mic cable to get the phantom power to the mic. I liked it enough to purchase a second one. I could use more because of my cab setup but money is an object. So for now two will have to do.

I bought these on a whim because our drummer was interested in them and we were about to record a full-length ourselves. It turns out that they break up easily; you can hear the physical element of the microphone crackling the whole time. I did some EQ to soften it a bit, but it's still there. No time to redo everything, and the rest of the band is fine with it, so it stays, unfortunately. The sound underneath the crackling is decent, but the crackling overshadows all. I might try a lower guitar volume next time I use them, but that kind of defeats the point of a microphone designed for recording guitar amps, doesn't it? I will make sure I buy something a bit more established that has more reviews when I have money for microphones again.

Comments about MXL Guitar Cube Pro:

The sound is OK, but nothing to write home about; the body is heavy and difficult to operate and set up, and, after about year, you can expect it to just die for no reason. One day it works, the next it's paperweight. All in all, a piece of junk.

Comments about MXL Guitar Cube Pro:

Hard Distorsion and occures for signals above 4 dB on one side of the sinusoid only. Seems like the membrane is hitting end stop. This is not cardoid response.

This mic is intended to take a lot of punch. It may be just broken mic.

Comments about MXL Guitar Cube Pro:

I bought this and let it sit in the Studio for about 3 months before I went to use it. The first time I took it out of the box to use it sounded horrible. We thought maybe it was too close to the amp and moved it back and it still sounded horrible. Then we got no signal, and thats when it went into door stop mode.

        Would not recommend.

Comments about MXL Guitar Cube Pro:

The MXL Cube miss are decent for low-end mics. The Guitar Cube has a full sound, a bit more bass-heavy than a typical SM57 on a guitar cabinet.

It does not, however, have as good of rejection of off-axis sound. (So expect bleed if recording a live session with a full band.)

The wider patter makes placement a bit easier, though. It took less tweaking of placement to find this mic's "sweet spot". All in all, it's worth the price when bought as a "deal" price.

the construction seems OK. Not as story as an old SM57, but it's a condenser not a dynamic. (Also, that means it NEEDS phantom power)

I found it didn't need too much gain from the preamp, either. Decent output.

Comments about MXL Guitar Cube Pro:

I got a new cabinet and wanted to reproduce the sound faithfully, hence the large diaphram condenser. The Cube is excellant. Placed properly (6-8" away), the sound is very 3D, and captures the nuances of the guitar and cabinet.
As with any condenser, you have to treat it with love and avoid bouncing it around. But the sound is well worth the effort.

This mic sounds amazingly clear and articulate. Unlike many mic's that dramatically color the sound and are extremely directional this mic reproduces EXACTLY what you're hearing in the studio with no need to do little more than just set it in front of the cabinet. This mic has rendered my old Suhr SM-57 obsolete. No more spending hours tweaking and trying to find the perfect mic angle, height, position, etc, etc, etc, trying to get my recordings to sound like what I was hearing in the room. Just set the Cube Pro in front of the cabinet and viola'! You've got it! And a stupid good deal with the Stupid Deal" of the day here at MF!

Comments about MXL Guitar Cube Pro:

I bought two of these on a STOTD and used them for both guitar cabinets and experimented with them as OH mics for my drum set in a controlled home studio. They have never been abused. Out of the box the first thing I noticed was the microphone mount that come with it is unable to hold the mic in a horizontal position. The clip is plastic, won't tighten up enough to hold grip. As drum over heads, the weight of the mic cause them to droop after about 5 minutes no matter what I did.

Secondly and most importantly, the big silver square portion of the mic has loosened after a single use, and when removed from the mic clip they both rattle and move around. I believe it is the nut/washer on the bottom of the mic where the cable plugs in that is not tightened enough or something. It worked its way loose. Dude to the design there is no way for me to get in an d tighten it back up, and I can't use it with a tinkling metal sound it's now creating when that piece moves.

Overall I like some of the MXL mic's, but this one just had zero craftsmanship ;/
