I switched from the old standard 58 to Audix a few years back, but recently rekindled the itch for a retro 50's style mic. I read the reviews on the nady PCM-200, and figured at that price it was worth a shot. I am amazed at the sound quality. I was ready to help it out with a tube preamp to help get the smooth vocal sound I wanted, but I tried it without the preamp first. The sound of this mic is so clear and smooth that I forgot about the preamp. It is as clear or clearer than any other non condenser mic I have used. On stage, I just love its tonality. It breaks through the mix, and the cardioid patern is tight enough that I haven't experienced a bit of feedback. I took me a couple of sets to figure out the subtleties of this Kool mic, but by the end of the night, I had figured out how to create different volumes and "power levels" by singing into different areas of the mic. Head on, it has a rich vibrant tone that you would expect from a more expensive mike. (I like its sound better for my show, than my Audix' or the 58's)In the studio, it helps to return a bit of that analog flavor to your digital recordings. It's killer! I have never written a review on any of the dozens of products that I have purchased from MF over the years, but I am compelled to share the absolute quality of this product. Another plus is the comments that I receive on its great looks. In over 20 yrs of performing, this is the first mic that has ever drawn compliments from the crowd. I use it on a boom stand, and have no problem playing guitar while using it. I am ordering a couple more so that I can always have one on hand for every situation. Try one, you'll love it! AAAA+

We do a retro-soul act, and I thought this would look great for our frontman, but when we actually used in at a gig it was pretty bad. Not that the quality of the mic is terrible, but it picks up EVERY bump within 3 feet on the stage around it... so if your group stands rock-solid still and you don't touch it, it's fine. But if you touch the mic, or the stand, or step near the stand, or someone else steps near the stand, fuggedaboudit. I hate to trash this mic as it does deliver on looks, and I had hoped the 'boom' I read about in other reviews could be overcome by a low-cut on the board, but no dice. This mic is a nightmare onstage.

Noisy little bugger

Comments about Nady PCM-200 Classic Dynamic Mic:

I bought four of these PCM 200 mics for a theater group for a Christmas play that is read as a live radio show. Right off the bat it picked up every footstep even with a carpet covered stage. Every time anyone touched the microphone or the stand, the mic responds with a loud bassy boom sound. That problem remained even after cutting the bass drastically in the eq. which I had to do to anyway just to avoid an annoying bass feedback problem. I've tried these mics in two venues with the same results. The mic housing is very noisy. They might sound great with a loud band to cover up the inherent boominess of the mic, or for placement in front of a guitar cabinet, but for a speaking voice it is not quiet enough to produce a quality sound.

Not all it's cracked up to be

Comments about Nady PCM-200 Classic Dynamic Mic:

I got this mic because I liked the look of it. I thought it would have a good sound - and it does - WAYYY to sensitive. I first tried it at an outdoor gig and this thing picked up every foot step on solid ground. It also picked up everytime I touched the mic stand. Not too mention the feedback issues and the trouble getting it dialed in. Don't think that it's a good deal - they have some work to do on this model before it's ready for real hard-working use. I think it'd make a great mic for someone who wants to set it up, never move it or touch it again and record, as long as they never say "s"'s.

Comments about Nady PCM-200 Classic Dynamic Mic:

I originally wanted the Shure 55SH, but it's a tad more money than i can afford right now. I have a few other Nady MICs and This seemed Like a Nice Compromise. It Perrforms as well as my SM58 if not better, and has Killer good Looks! My band recently performed on a bill with 6 other bands for a benefit , and as soon as I put it on a MIC stand, I got a round of applause! After our set ... guys from other bands came up and were amazed about the Look of the Mic and the Sound Quality. I have to add, I was The only singer Using a Compressor and Equalizer ... but In the end it all paid off ... we were the only band to do an encore!

Not what I was looking for:

Comments about Nady PCM-200 Classic Dynamic Mic:

This mic does look cool, but that's about where the good stops. It really does sound "vintage", so beware if you're looking for a clear vocal sound for a band. The sound isn't clear, it's very muffled and, well, "vintage". I would recommend getting a Sure sm57 or 58 instead if you're looking for quality, clear, realistic vocals. The looks are what sold me on this, don't get taken like I did. This thing is also very quite (it doesn't pick anything up very well) and the shape, though it looks awesome, is very akward for actual usage. There's a reason they don't make many mics that shape anymore. Not worth the money for most people, unless you want to sound like a 50s recording. Bottom line: pass this up and go for function over form.

Comments about Nady PCM-200 Classic Dynamic Mic:

I Bought this instead of the Shure 55SH because it was Half the Price. It has a great look and it's a Solid, well built MIC. I have another nady MIC and I Love the Natural sound it puts out. I was a Little dissapointed that it only tilts back about 15 degrees. I play Guitar and Sing and I mostly use a Boom MIC. it doesn't tilt enough to use with a Boom. I'll have to get Used to a Standard Mic Stand. It's Great for feedback reduction though. and the Look is Phenomenal. Aside from the adjustability issue I really like this MIC.

Great mic, but beware the switch

By Bluejay

from Da Nort' Woods

Comments about Nady PCM-200 Classic Dynamic Mic:

This Nady PCM-200 Classic Dynamic Mic is a great looking and sounding mike. Has a lot of punch, and the price sure beats other "classic" looking mikes. But apparently Nady has a problem in quality control when it comes to the "silent" on-off switch that it touts in the features list. My first PCM-200 works fine and the switch is truly silent. But I'm about to return my third (and last) attempt to get another -- all three subsequent units produce a very, very loud "POP" turning on or off, enough to worry me over the effect it might have on my PA speakers. Also, the first of this flawed trio was significantly lower powered than my initial unit. I'm bummed that I can't seem to get a pair of these that live up to the promised features. May be a bad production run, but someone at Nady should have caught this flaw.

Comments about Nady PCM-200 Classic Dynamic Mic:

I got ahold of this mic and gave it a try at a live gig for a band doing an amped acoustic country/punk set. It took a little bit of EQ but the sensitivity of this mic was great. It didnt take much preamp or volume to get a loud clean and clear sound. It gives an old school feel and sound to the show, and I didnt have a single problem with even a hint of feedback. Great mic for the price.
