I connect my guitar effects processor to this either via spdif or rca. the sound quality esp 24 bit is super in this card. It is GSIF compatible so you can use TASCAM Giga studio for very very very super real samples. The down side is that if you add another card for other purposes or a dvd decoder card and have to route things manually, things can become incompatible and you TASCAM GSTUDIO might not work and sound may not be produced from this card even when you have setup sound setting correctly. your internal routing will be messed up. I had such a problem. I removed the dvd decoder and used the built in video card for dvd playback then everything became ok. However I can't use the GStudio because my other card which also has GSIF compatibility supposedly is a Terratech DMX 6Fire. Both cards have the ICensemble ENVY24 chip. There is some noised, machine computer noise that I can hear when everything is idle. However I have not detected it in any recordings. May be it is masked well. Now this is a decent buy for the money. I bought this about 4 years ago and it is till working. Works great with protools m-powered.The whole package comes with a lot of demo software and lots of little software packages but what is included keeps changing.

This product is not compatible with Mac OS 9.2.2 -- regardless of the published system requirements. I learned this only after several emails back and forth with M-Audio tech support and then a lengthy phone call (wait time 30 mins.) at which point the rep informed there was no MIDI driver for 9.2.2 and none planned. Ok, so they only support OS-X which is understandable, but then they should not advertise the card as compatible with OS 9. Also, it's probably worth pointing out that the CD the card shipped with contained -- get this -- no drivers. (what?!) I'm stuck with it now and will have to use another interface for MIDI. I probably will not buy another M-Audio product based on this experience.

An obvious choice for the price and the results.

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

This audio card is a basic model, with no more or less than is necessary to obtain high quality audio and professional recording quality. Combined with two good condenser microphones(R0DE)good tube preamps(ART), and a good sense of engineering, you can produce recordings that are of a higher quality than those made in professional studios. If you need more than stereo input for what you want to do, then the price range for a full set of equipment is almost 4 times what a basic setup will cost you.I had never installed hardware in a computer before, and I managed to get this to work without any hiccups, along with several other things. The Monitor Mixer allows you to moniter your input without any other hardware. Other than the adapters, but that's all easy to get at radio-shack. Best device for a small studio.

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

I just don't get it. The sound quality may be great, low latency etc. But only a 2 X 2 full duplex? There are many sound cards out there with excellent sound quality, low latency etc. that offer a 4 x 4 full duplex operation for the same price, and are compatible with Sonar, Cubase, Samplitude, Cakewalk, Logic, Reason and a host of other DAW's.

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

This looked like a good audio capture card for my studio programs (Cubase & Cool Edit Pro). It was a good value and I haven't been disappointed. It worked with Win 98 & XP flawlessly. Plus, if I ever need more inputs at any time, I can buy another and they'll work together.

I bought this sound card about a year ago and have absolutely no complaints. The sound is crystal clear with zero latency. I use Pro Tools M-Powered 7, which is compatible with this card. I use a 6 channel Behringer mixer with built in mic pre-amps on the front end with a Rolls personal monitor to control the headphones. Great results! I highly recommend this sound card.

    Excellent Entry Level Interface

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

I've used a number of entry level audio interfaces, but I must say that the Audiophile 2496 is by far the best I've used yet. The sound quality on both the input and output channels is superb, and latency is nonexistent when using the ASIO drivers (I did experience some latency using the loopback feature of Sonar when I was using it with the WDM drivers.) The console that sits in the Windows XP tray is extremely easy to manage, and it makes dialing everything the way you need it very quick and easy. My only real nitpick is that I would have preferred balanced 1/4" inputs and outputs instead of the RCA's that it came with, but that's more of a matter of personal preference really. All-in-all, this card is an excellent choice for both the novice recording engineer and the seasoned studio veteran in need of a two channel interface.

    Great Beginning studio sound card

    By Nicholas Warren

    from Ohio

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

This card is an excellent deal for starting a small home studio operation where you are the whole band. I used it with Cakewalk HomeStudio 2004 and It worked great after fixing the RIQ settings on my motherboard for my PC. This card only allows for one stereo channel to be recorded at a time which means you usually have to run the output of your mixer to the stereo input of your sound card which is a trademark for novice studios. I must say that the card is great for the price, It does however have a cheap smoothing filter which chops off a lot of higher frequencies and gives your audio recordings an unprofession lack of clearity. But you get what you pay for, so if this is your first sound card you are buying, it is great for the price.

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

Bought this card for my computer based studio and its perfect. Does exactly what I want it to do. My latency is almost at 0 thanks to this card. No more offbeat syths and riffs. Haven't even used all of its features but i know this card will grow old with me.LoL. I use it for Midi, Recording, and just plain jammin, and its quiet and crisp. Nothing better for the money. Yes.

    Not bad, but one problem...

    By Veau

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

When I first bought this and installed it, I kept getting MIDI dropout and playback errors. I wasted a hundred dollars on a new one before I realized it was a driver problem. When you buy this, update the drivers the moment you install it or else you'll be in for some frustration. Other than that, it gives a fairly clean sound, is easy to use, easy to install, and a pleasure to make music with.

    Midi, Latency, and Vista Problems

    By ANJL54

    from Lubbock, TX

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

I've had this card for about 4 years. I've had bad latency problems with it, but overcame them by using the headphones. It has never played back any midi files - I have to use my C-Media Surround Sound Card. I would have replaced it years ago but I'm disabled and on a fixed income so I couldn't afford to replace it. Now that I have upgraded to Vista, I can't get it to work at all. Nothing plays back through it - neither wav nor midi files. I've checked the inputs, outputs, AISO drivers and everything. Nothing works although my system says that it works. I get no sound, so now I'm either going to have to downgrade to XP or change cards. I'm looking for another card. I abhor this card and hopefully can find another that is affordable.

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

I have this soundcard for more than 3 years now, and:1) So far it hasn't caused me a single problem2) Not so many features, but still more than you can guess on first sight. Combined with a good mixer, you can work miracles.3) Not the best sounding card, but more than decent. Until some years ago, people were recording whole albums with this piece of gear.4) I would prefer it with balanced ins/outs. Not that there is any REAL problem with the supplied ones.5) Only now I am looking for an upgrade, but then again... maybe I will stick with it and just buy a better mixer to connect! :-))All in all:Definatelly worth 100% of the money. You get the job done, and possibly better than you expect.

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

I use this card along with an inexpensive Behringer mixer that powers/pre-amps mics and provides headphone output in my home studio. The card is installed in an Intel P4, 1.3 Ghz system with only 128 MB Ram. I mostly do multi-track recording (one track at a time) but I do some live stereo mixing as well, and I am pleased with the performance of this sound card. I get a very clear recorded sound with no noticable latency when using Krystal (freeware) for recording. I do, however, experience some latency when recording with Audacity (also freeware) but that could be my fault in the software setup. Audacity does work great with it for mastering and mixing down. You can't go wrong with this card if you're like me, and you need to set up a simple but high quality home studio on a budget.

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

I got one of these about 4 years ago and I recorded an entire demo with it! I used Cakewalk Home studio and though there are some latency issues with it if you have the input monitoring on, overall it records and plays back great! The thing I love about this is that you can sunc up to 4 of them in one computer, and my band is currently recording our independent album on it! If I could find some hardware that uses S/PDIF we could expand our mic'ing capabilites and maybe do the next CD live-to-disk!

    M-Audio Audiophile 2496

    By AJ Stuyve

    from Neenah, WI

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

Wow, what can I say. For the price, it is an incredible product. For those who are using a USB interface, or a on-board sound card, you need to get this. Then get some RCA-1/4 and go from your mixer to this card, it works INCREDIBLY well. Zero-latency, and a 100% upgrade from on-board sound. However, this is NOT MADE to be a soundblaster-type card. These are recording cards, don't get this if you want "Black Hawk Down" to sound less snappy.

Good Quality Audio Card for Musicians

    By PlayingInArizona

    from Arizona

Comments about M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI Digital Audio Card:

I've owned this card for years, almost since M-Audio first started selling it. I've had it installed on different computers, and used it with a wide variety of music and audio software, and with different versions of Windows. It's always come through for me, working well when other sound cards and drivers didn't. The audio quality is about the best you'll find anywhere for a 24 bit/96KHz card. You get stereo ins and outs on RCA jacks, MIDI on a breakout cable, and more channels on S/PDIF if you can use it. The best part is that M-Audio has continued to develop the driver for this product, so there are ongoing enhancements and support for new OS versions. The overall value of this product is unbeatable.
