I have a bitter sweet story about the SP5s. I'll start off with the bitter. I fried the either the woofer or the crossover (still troubleshooting)at my third DJ gig with these things. After the anxiety wore off, I noticed that no one else at the party noticed its demise, hence the HIGH rating you see before you. SWEEEEET!! I lost that speaker within moments of starting that gig and coasted flawlessly for another 4 hours on a single engine. After contemplating between these and the BW loaded SP2s I am so happy I chose these in retrospect. Just to validate this story, I am an R&B/Hip-Hop DJ, so I wasn't playing Yanni all night. I'm talkin' deep thumping bass tracks where a typical solo speaker would be exposed. Please do not misinterpret. The SP2s are awesome and you will get better lower end out of it, but to me the $150 price delta is not worth it. I have plussed the SP2s on quality but downgraded on value. Take it from a guy who thought he would be stranded on a desert island; one of these guys got me home. I AM A BELIEVER!!
I play in a Rock/Alternative band and we use these in conjunction with a powered 2x10 Subwoofer. At only 400 watts per side from our powered mixer, these speakers get pretty loud. We use them primarily for vocals, but we have put snare and kick through them and it worked well. These speakers are actually pretty versatile - my dad has used them to play wedding shows too - all his music is made with MIDI and the speakers responded very well to the bassy/thumping beats. I would really recommend using a Subwoofer with a set of these, it will make a huge difference. Great speakers, great price, very durable, built in the USA. The Carpet covering is not my personal favorite but its tough.
I work weekends as a Karaoke DJ, and have owned a set of SP5's for a year now. Having done some 50-60 shows with my SP5's, I can truly say they are really great speakers. They can handle any style of music we play, and produce a healthy amount of bass. And are fairly easy to handle and move around. Well worth the money, you can't go wrong with Peavy!!
I'm a mobile DJ and got a pair of SP 5s. These are some of the best sounding speakers I have ever heard. There are one of the original pairs, built around 95' and sound as good as the day they were bought. Low end has a punch and crisp highs. They have never failed and the in-field replaceable coils are handy (even though in eleven years I have never needed to replace them)I highly recomend them!!!
I've had these speakers for going on 2 years now and they've delivered consistently. It doesn't matter if it's a small or large (300+ in attendance) affair. I've put them on speaker stands and they've done more than what I've expected them to. They're durable too. I'm a mobile DJ so these speakers are always getting banged around. These are a nice set of primary speakers and an outstanding set of secondary. Love'em.
I use two SP5's for my karaoke show and they are fantastic. The sound is great.
These speakers are the best. I have had them for about a year now. Never could have asked for anything better. I will say, when I first receieved my speakers, I noticed one of them had a vibration at high power. I found out that there was a malfunction to the basket. Just one unlucky speaker. I got it fixed! These speakers are like a rock!
After touring the U.K with my band, I have really come to appreciate name brand gear. we played in churches all over England, Scotland, and Ireland. We played through some pretty lame behringer PA's. Peavey gear is actually getting pretty popular in Europe, so we played through a lot of peavey PA's. I can not even explain how much better Peavey and yamaha are than behringer. I own these speakers, and they simply sound amazing. Very quality build and speaker components.
I've owned the Peavey SP5's for about 10+ years. They have been abused on the road, in the rain (as long as you try to keep the back terminals dry) and through the years. These speakers are still as Crisp, Clear, and pack a powerful Punch as the day I bought them. Peavey is the Best and at a Great Price. Buy Peavey they won't let you down!
My local music store talked me into trying these and I have to say if you play large or small clubs this is the only P.A. speaker you'll ever need. It has alot of bottom end and has enough speaker to handle most power applications.
