Portable 24-bit/96kHz USB 2.0 audio/MIDI interface lets you record with near-zero-latency dynamics processing.

The AudioBox 22VSL introduces a new generation of PreSonus USB 2.0 audio/MIDI interfaces that take hardware/software integration to the logical next step. Using your computer CPU and PreSonus Virtual StudioLive (VSL) software, AudioBox VSL-series interfaces provide reverb and and delay effects and the same Fat Channel compression, limiting, semi-parametric EQ, and high-pass filter, as the PreSonus StudioLive 16.0.2 digital mixer— all with inaudible latency. Now you can monitor and record with or without real-time dynamics processing and EQ!

What’s so great about effects and processing on monitors?
Tracking without hearing effects and signal processing is like playing a video game with your eyes closed. Musicians rely on aural cues when performing, and their performance can vary depending on what they hear in their monitors. Adding just the right amount of compression, EQ, and reverb can make a huge difference in their ability to hear themselves clearly and to experience their performance as if it occurred in a natural space rather than in the artificial sonic environment of the studio. The result is a better performance and ultimately a better recording.

You have plenty of effects plug-ins for your DAW, but processing audio with a DAW takes more time than you might think. True, we’re talking milliseconds, but it’s long enough that if you put DAW effects in your studio monitors, you’ll hear the original sound slightly before the processed signal, which is very disorienting. That much delay might be acceptable for live gigs, where the band is playing together in an ambient space that has natural delay. But you can’t record that way in the studio.

Fortunately, PreSonus' engineering wizards have dramatically reduced processing delay in the AudioBox VSL series. The result: dynamics processing, EQ, reverb, and effects that feel real, with no audible delay.

And if you like what you hear, you can record with AudioBox VSL-series effects, too! These are the same high-quality StudioLive 16.0.2 Fat Channel dynamics processors and EQs that professional musicians, engineers, and producers record with every day.

Great processors are a PreSonus tradition

PreSonus didn’t invent the first audio interface with effects. They simply did it better and for less money. Sure, some interface manufacturers who don’t normally make signal processors have added a compressor, EQ and a few effects to their interfaces. But the AudioBox VSL series provides all that, plus a separate limiter, expander, and high-pass filter—and we’ve been making high-quality signal processors since 1995. The AudioBox VSL-series’ Virtual StudioLive (VSL)-based effects and Fat Channel processing have been extensively field-tested and proven popular by tens of thousands of StudioLive-series mixer users, including many top professionals.

Of great importance, thanks to VSL’s drag-and-drop convenience, adding processing and creating and loading presets is easy. Pro-level processing and superior ease of use mean you’ll get better results and have more fun!

High-end sound in a portable, roadworthy interface
Bus-powered, compact, and rugged, the AudioBox 22VSL offers two convenient front-panel mic/instrument combo inputs with global phantom power and provides two line-level outputs. It sports the same high-headroom Class A XMAX preamps as the StudioLive mixers and has 24-bit/96kHz converters with 114dB dynamic range for clear, clean audio. And it boasts PreSonus’ legendary 150 mW headphone output, which is loud enough to explode the oysters in a Po’-Boy sandwich. (Be careful with your level control!)

When we tell you PreSonus made the AudioBox 22VSL “rugged,” we’re not fooling! It employs the same heavy-duty steel case as the original AudioBox USB—the unit Presonus famously stomped, kicked, and drove over with a full-size truck before using it to make a very nice recording. (You can witness this in the video AudioBox USB Built for the Road.) Now that’s what we call “roadworthy.” And this mighty mite fits in just a third of a rackspace and can be screw-mounted to a standard rack tray (not included).

The flexibility and power of software

VSL enables you to easily manage the processing and mixing from your Mac or Windows PC and provides editor/librarian functions, making it simple to create and use a library of presets. To get you started, PreSonus included the same library of more than 50 Fat Channel presets that comes with StudioLive mixers. These presets were created by professional musicians and engineers and let you instantly set up dynamics processing and EQ for vocals, guitar, and much more.

Seamlessly integrated with the included Studio One™ Artist DAW and VSL, the AudioBox 22VSL interface works with virtually all Mac and Windows audio-recording software. And unlike most things nowadays, it’s very easy on your budget.

The Presonus Audio Box 22 VSL Is enjoyable to use and has so many features. A clean sound with no problems with the Unit Yet. I fully intend to upgrade from the Artist to the Pro as soon as possible. It is easy to get started recording and their is so many features on it that it would require lots of experience before you could use all of it. But it is worth it. So much fun to operate and the idea of using DAW for recording on your personal computer makes it easy to take around. I would recommned this audio recorder to anyone who is serious about recording.
Metal Unit to hook up the headphones, Analog out, instruments and microphones. Adjustments are easy on it with good clean feel.

Presonus makes good products but they are a bit pricey when compared to the competition, with no apparent reasons for that. They all have pros and cons and similar quality. This unit, for example, is not designed to take line-level inputs, making it a little limiting if you want to connect a drum machine, keyboard, synthesiser or even an electric acoustic guitar with a built-in pre-amp. At least they are honest enough to tell you this in the manual (page 5).

You would need to buy the 44VSL to be able to connect active instruments, but it would cost you 300. A better option would be the NI Komplete Audio 6 for 230, or the Presonus Firestudio Mobile or the Focusrite Saffire 14 for about 250. These have more line-level connections in their backs.

The other small units from Mackie, Focusrite and Steinberg also offer the same quality (again, with pros and cons), but their inputs allow for line-level instruments. The Presonus 22 does not. They are also 50 cheaper. Some have Midi connection, others don't. Some offer USB 1.1, while others have USB 2.0. You will need USB 2.0 or Firewire if you plan to record more than two tracks at the same time (if you have more than two inputs, of course). The new Steinberg UR 22 is a great unit for 150, however, it allows the connection of only one guitar without a DI box, i.e., it has only one Hi-Z input.

At the end, think twice before buying these interfaces. You need to know exactly what you will (or may) be playing and what you want to do while recording. Many of these units were launched years ago, so can we expect some upgrades in terms of hardware soon?!?! I hope so. There are still a lot of obsolete equipment out there that allows multiple inputs but only two tracks recording due to the limited connection (USB 1.1) and design. I am now getting into the mixer/interface combo world, but this would be a more expensive option.

Anyway, good luck in your search for the "perfect" low cost interface. Do your research. Get to know the unit's inputs, connection to the computer, sampling rate, the "bit", quality of the pre-amps, etc. You will need all of this to make a sound decision.

Comments about PreSonus Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 Recording System:

I have now had this interface and the included Studio One daw software up and running for about four months. It is as advertised. The interface itself is simple, solid, and portable. However some of the reviews here may paint too good a picture of instant success for "rookies" operating the included software for the audiobox and the daw. I have been a musician for years, but the world of recording with mixers etc. was a new adventure for me even though I am completely computer "literate". If you don't have any knowledge or experience in this area, then there is a definite learning curve on how to get started, and then getting your recording sounding good. The answers though, are all out there on the information "superhighway". I purchased a video series online by Groove 3 called Studio One 2 explained which was a big help for the ins and outs of the daw. The Presonus website also provides a lot of supplemental information. I just wish the Studio One manual(which is the "help" menu on the daw) had come with some of that extra information I needed instead of just the bare essentials of how to operate the daw. Nevertheless I found Presonus tech support to be absolutely helpful in answering any questions or problems that I had, whether I contacted them by e-mail or phone. Now that I have learned a lot about this field of recording(and I know I still have a lot more to learn)and learned how to comfortably use the interface and the software, I am having a great time with it and getting some really nice recordings even with my still limited knowledge in this regard. If you want to make some nice recordings with minimal monetary outlay, this is the direction to go.

Poor Drivers Make This Box useless

Comments about PreSonus Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 Recording System:

I bought this box to use with a laptop running Sonar8. There where compatibility problems from the very beginning. I was told that I must upgrade to Sonar X1; I did, but problems persisted.

Very simply, the drivers available make this unit absolutely useless for working with Sonar. I have tried different computers, operating systems, and spent countless hours following instructions from Presonus only to end up with a box that constantly pops and drops out, if it works at all.

Never could get the midi to work.

I have worked with many other products and never had problems this frustrating. Very disappointed with Presonus.

There is probably nothing wrong with this product and it may just be me knowing nothing about recording an acoustic guitar, but after several frustrating attempts to come up with a clean recording, the end product did not not meet my expectations. The recording was almost inaudible, the vaunted presets didn't do anything to make the audio closer to sounding professional. I have produced better recordings with my portable recorder without the numerous cables wrapped around my leg and having to "steal" my daughter's laptop just so I can record with Studio One. I'm sure it's me, but then again I expected the product to help me out - and it didn't.

I was recording within one hour of opening the box! Be sure to install the USB drivers before plugging the unit in the first time!!!!! I downloaded all the updates and was off and running!

The included software Studio One could not have been easier to learn. This was my first experience with any type of recording software. I missed around with the included demos to get my feet wet.

I will be upgrading to the next model up with 4 mic ports in the near future!

I installed this on windows 8, laptop with i7 1.2GHZ and 8 gig
                      (Older Alienware MX14)

I would recommend this to any one wanting a decent unit to get into recording.

Comments about PreSonus Audiobox 22VSL USB 2.0 Recording System:

It took longer to open the box than it took to make my first mulit track recording. Absolute amazing sound and ease of use. The software is incredible and fun to use. BE aware, the 22vsl does not have line level inputs so if you need to plug your keyboard or other line level gear into it, I would think a little harder and go for the 44vsl. Great job Presonus !!!!
