I picked this unit up shortly after it came out, about 5 years ago. It was my first recording interface, and at the time USB 2.0 wasn't out, so Firewire was the only high-speed interface available. Anyways, this unit has been my rock. It's seen my studio grow from the ground up and through it all, it has been solid. I use it mainly for guitar/vocal demos and I've probably put close to 1000 hours on it and I've had no issues. Phantom power is tops, the gains are great on the front. the two rear inputs have no gain control, but you really don't need them with the +12dB. The only thing that would be nice is on-board verb and eq, but that's what makes this thing so affordable. If you're just starting out and looking to record only a few tracks at a time (4 (2 mic max) + 1 spidf + 1 midi), this is a great unit, if you need a full band all at once, you won't have enough tracks and you'll have to spend some coin. For personal studio recordings, this is a must. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

I have owned the Firebox now for about 6 months.  I did a lot of research before purchasing this device, as it is my first recording interface and I didn't have much money to spend.  Despite some of the reviews questioning its reliability, I have had an extremely positive experience with the Firebox.  Not only is it a great price, but I have not had any problems setting up or using the unit.  My only gripes are with the Cubase LE software, which is a far cry from the full version of Cubase.  The Firebox records excellent quality tracks and is very easy to use, in my opinion.  Having no experience whatsoever with setting up or recording music, I was able to get the Firebox set up and recording tracks in a couple days.  Of course, I read the entire manual; though I'm sure recording savvy folks could get it going in no time.  For those concerned about reliability, I purchased the extended warranty and am very glad I picked this device.  Remember since it does not have an on/off switch to not leave it plugged in all the time if your computer is on, it does get fairly warm.  While it is in operation make sure it has some space etc.  These are all common sense things - I think if you take care of the device properly it will last a long time.  The only way I?d be happier with my purchase is if I had the full version of Cubase.

I bought a Presonus Firebox about 3 years ago, worked great for my basic needs.  Sound quality of the converters and pres are decent, but not the best compared to units 4x+ as much.  The pres have plenty of gain for most mics, but they may not be enough for some. Just recently it decided to die on me; The unit turned off, the unit was really hot, and it smelled like something was fried in there... :RIP:

I bought this thing a few weeks ago and so far it's worked like a charm. I haven't used the included recording software yet (probably won't, either) because I've been using it for GarageBand. I'm running firewire and haven't had any latency issues. Haven't used it for midi yet but I'm expecting it to be as smooth as everything else has been so far. It runs pretty silent too. Very sturdy and well made, also. If you're looking for an affordable way to lay down tracks at home, this won't let you down.

This product is a perfect example of real bang for your buck.  NOTE if you have the new aluminum body macbook pro you will need to purchase a 6 pin to 9 pin firewire cable before you can you this.  Amateur to pros will love this little firebox!
