Over the years, I have worked with some very well know high end mics in various studios, and I have a very nice mic collection, some of the industry standards for recording; I have been getting very good results, but when I plugged the NTK in, I couldn't believe what I was hearing! My pair of AKG 414's picked up the room nicely, but the Rode sounded like I was in the room.. unbelievable! On top of hearing every nuance, there was a warmth, spark and clarity that one would expect from a 5 - 10K range mic, like a U87 or C12. I put it in fromt of a saxophone & flute in an open room during a rehearsal, and during playback, I was wondering how the drums got into the studio monitor returns, and why they sounded so good; after a moment I realized it was the bleed into the NTK that I was hearing. It picked up the natural drum kit sound from 12 feet away, and added a richness and sparkle that my other mikes never could acheive. Oh, and the saxophone sounded much more warm and exciting than our previous favorite, which was a 414 and EV RE20 combo. Rode has managed to bring the kind of rich studio sound to the most budget minded recording enthusiast. Well done! If you need one 'go to' condensor mic, I highly recommend the Rode NTK; great for vocals, guitar, winds, drum overheads, you name it..Can't wait to get a second, so I have a stereo pair.

I purchased the NTK Mike to record my vocals. I used it a few times, the sound was OK. Lately I noticed distortions in the mid-high frequencies.
I contacted the company and send them a clip with the distortions. I din't hear a response. After a week or so I e-mailed them the clip again. They aknowledged receiving it and wrote they would analyze it. A month went by and I didn't hear from them. I contacted them again. It has been a few weeks since I contacted them I didn't hear from them yet.

This company has a lousy custom support it shoudn't take months to analyze a few seconds clip.

Outstand, and GREAT support

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

This mic is fantastic for recording most voices, as well as acoustic guitars, etc. All that goes without saying. I was even more amazed at the customer support though. I've had the mic for 5 years, and the special cable gave out. I was worried where the heck to find a replacement for the special cable...not available anywhere BUT before I panicked, I called Rode (their phone # is really easy to find on their website as opposed to most "customer service" help. I called, got through quickly, I told them the cord had broken and needed to know where to find a replacement. Instead of telling me where to get a new cable, they took my name & address and are overnighting a free replacement out to me at no charge. DO buy Rode, and DO register your mic. Awesome.

Rode NTK Condenser mic

By MvA

from Atlanta

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

Absolutely steelar recording mic for many applications. Vocals, especially male, shine as does acoustic guitar, mandolin, resonator guitar. I'm particularly pleased with the sound as drum overheads, and own tow specifically for that purpose. 1st tube mic I would recommend for the low- to mid-budget mic locker.

DOA

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

Unfortunately, I have to be the one who gives this mic a bad review. Mine was DOA. Unpacked it and plugged it in and nothing. I did get some response if I tapped on the side of the mic. I double checked with another mic, cables and any other possibility and it was the Rode Mic. So Rode gets a bad score for quality.

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

I have been doing radio and television voiceovers for over 20 years. In that time, I have used hundreds of mics, many costing into the Thousands...

When my Re20 and DBX 286 took a lightning strike, I decided that it was time to step up and away from "broadcast" mics. I set out to pick up a Neumann U87 and a Focusrite channel. All my goodies were on the counter at the store when the clerk asked me what I was going to do with the mic. I told him that I do voiceovers and he (in front of my wife) asked if he could save me about $2500.00 by showing me something different.

My wife was more interested in seeing what he was talking about more than I was, so after her prompting me to at least look, I reluctantly went to the back where he set up my Neumann/Focusrite combination and the Rode NTK and Presonus Eureka channel right next to it. He gave me a set of phones and walked away.

First, I tried the Neumann and it was all I thought it would be. It was perfect. Nothing could possibly compare... Could it? I wasn't even going to bother to try the Rode at first, but my wife was sitting next to me, so....

Expecting it to be bad, I said "This won't take long"... and it didn't. When the first sound from my mouth came back into my headphones, I was sold. The NTK (For MY voice) was the hands down winner. I took the phones off and started switching everything off. My wife said "That bad, huh?" I said "Yeah! I almost spent $2700.00 on a microphone!

I bought the optional shock mount and a new producer's desk with the savings and STILL spent less than half of the money I intended to spend that afternoon.

So now that I have had over a decade to try it out really proper like, here is what I think...

*** THIS MIC RUNS 24/7/365. It NEVER gets turned off! ***

Somewhere around year 7, the voltage switch on the power supply got dirty and needed to be cleaned. I only figured this out after changing the capacitors in the power supply... Recently, the tube went bad, so I have another one on order. Not bad for having over 96,300 hours on it. In the meantime, I am using a Sennheiser MK 416... The mic that everyone tells me I must have for voiceovers. Sorry guys, the Sennheiser is thin by comparison. I'll keep the Rode at half the price!

Other than that, this mic has absolutely exceeded any expectation I ever had for it. It sounds even better today than it did out of the box. I will be buying another one soon since the one I have is aging and I would like to have a backup in the event it needs to be sent off for some time.

AWESOME MIC! Buy one NOW!

2nd Try Was Successful

By JimG

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

2nd try and I'm keeping this mic. Fortunately, it worked right out of the box. I'm not an engineer but clearly this mic does vocals on another level from any mic I've used before. You may not notice it as much when you first record, but mixing down is where you really hear the clarity of it and how well it reproduces. Excellent mic for digital recording and if you want your stuff to sound professional, this mic will help get you there.

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

Where do I begin? First off this Mic has done me wonders throughout the years. When I first bought this Mic it was an impulse buy. Secondly I did not have much running at the time in my studio. But the quality of this mic did not fail to impress me. Over the years I was wondering if this mic would eventually fail on me. Nope still going strong after 7 years...this mic is really a bang for your buck. If your looking to spend at least 1000 on a mic. Save a few hundred and buy this mic. It will deliver the quality and the warmth. Sadly I stoped using this mic because I just upgraded to a Neumann u87 Ai. You really cant compare to the Neumann as much but I have done a vocal test on both mics and they almost sound similar only difference is that the Neumann is a classic and it is well built compared to the Rode. I LOVE MY RODE! BUT LOVE MY NEUMANN MORE!

    great mic (when it works)

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

I just bought this mic because of a recommendation. I did not know anything about rode mics. I was super excited to try this bad boy out because of all the hype i heard after i bought it. however as soon as i hooked it up, I guess its the valve inside i dont know im not a expert, started being really noisy at about -4db of a constant noise that was very frustrating seeing how you can not take mics back. It also could've been the 7-pin cable it sounds sort of like a short but seeing how the cable gives the mic its power it sounds really bad. When this mic is working right it is an unbelievable sounding mic. It has a warm, and very crisp clean sound. However one thing that bothered me on top of the noise is the mic seems to pop to easy, such as S and T sounds. Even with my desser and parametric EQ i could barely stop it from popping without loosing the high frequencies all together. Which then brings the mic back down to a cheaper sounding mic ,because you start to lose all the clarity in the mics natural sound I give this mic an overall good score because this one fact. Through some of is troubles this mic does produce a very good vocal track no lie. If you decide to pick one up maybe you will have better luck than i did.

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

a I'm a rapper from Cleveland,OH & I thought tube mics was only for singers, but its not, this mic helps me challenge my voice, & if you don't got the voice this mic will tell you!, cuze I had singers get on my other mics & sound like an 8 but on this they sounded like a 6 so this is definitely the one to get especially if you trying to become a better singer, & the power box this mic comes with lets you know this mic isn't playing cuze whatever you got it can take it.

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

Rode does not have the same "name" recognition of Neumann. However, the NTK performs unbelievably well. Depending on the singer behind the mic, the Rode NTK can result in better vocals tracks than the Neumann U87. It sounds incredible. You can record professional vocal tracks. It is a quiet and warm sounding microphone. Buy it today. You will not regret it.

The best money I have ever spent on a mic.

    By Cydonia Sound

    from WA State

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

As a 15 year veteran in the pro audio industry, I am always looking for something that has a great bang for the buck. This mic really kicked my butt! I own a bunch of really fancy German mics and a bunch of other very "High End" ($) mics and this thing flat out rocks! I sat in my studio and did a comparison test between the Neuman TLM 103, U87, AKG414 and about half a dozen others. This mic is warmer and has more charachter than all of then. Once it gets up to its operating temp, there is nothing I would rather use for a warm vocal sound or accoustic guitar. I also use this mic on sax, electric guitar, well, just about anything. It has become one of my absolute favorites. I wish it had at least a 10db pad and a high pass filter...but hey! I am not complaining!

    Why Not????

    By John Doe-0t_mw

    from Covington, WA

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

If you are going to look at condenser mics in this price range, then you are going to shop around and find the best performance to dollar ratio. From my personal experience I have found it to be excellent for vocals with a very nice warm ambience, not muddy though, that I havn't found in to many mics (in this price range). I know I hear people saying that it sounds as good as a Neumann, or whatever, but the truth is that they have a great sound that is there own. If you want a truly nice mic that you won't regret buying, then check it out.

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

The Rde NTK has to be one of the world's great mics for voice recording...In addition to music and singing, I do TV voiceovers for a living, and have used Neumann U87's and TLM103's in the studio many times. I bought a Rde NT-2 about two years ago, and have felt it was pretty much in the same sonic and quality categories as the Neumanns (for a lot less money!) A few months ago, I purchased the NTK -- and I'm blown away by its quality! All the clarity and presence of the NT-2, but richer and warmer, with a clean, smooth sibilance - making de-essing virtually unnecessary. Warm tube/valve character; almost unlimited headroom (it doesn't have a 10db pad, but it doesn't NEED one); built like a tank... Cardioid-only, but I don't find that to be much of a limitation. Rde mics have a well-deserved reputation for quality (and $ value), and the NTK is a real winner!

Comments about Rode Microphones NTK Microphone:

Bought this guy a few weeks ago needing a valve mic to add to my small mic locker. I'm telling you this is one of the best mics out there for the money. It's built like a tank. I pulled it from the case and was amazed how heavy and how solid it felt. I plugged it into my Presonus eureka and packed up my acoustic and started playing away. I was so amazed that I played for 45 not realizing it. I was just so shocked how good it sounded. There's a bit of color to this mic. It's almost a silky-grain, but with warmth and clarity. The optional shockmount is well built. You can violently shake this thing and it won't fall out.I'm telling you this mic is great for the money. If you want one good mic, this is it.
