OVERVIEW

For singers in loud bands.

The Sennheiser e 838 microphone from the evolution 800 Series has been engineered for the vocalist who needs the vocals to cut through the band. Due to its excellent acoustic properties, the e 838 mic delivers a high signal output to cut through high on-stage sound levels with ease. A gentle presence boost to even tonal response ensures vocal clarity and projection. The balanced frequency response maintains signal quality when moving on and off-axis during performance. The minimal proximity effect provides for consistently clear bass-end performance when singing closer to, or further from the microphone. The cardioid pick-up pattern provides excellent feedback rejection and good isolation from incidental rear noise. The rugged metal construction and internal damping isolates handling noise.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

Love this microphone, used to sing through a shure sm58 but it just can't compare to this beauty. Sennenheiser is high quality and this microphone is the real deal for a great price.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

This is the silver version of the e840 and has the same capsule as the e935. I absolutely love my e945s for depth, clarity, accuracy so I tried an e935 because I need tone mics for some folks. The e935 seemed to emphasize tone way heavy over clarity, and I sent it back, very disappointed after my e945s. Then I found out about this e838, basically the same mic as the e935 without the ND magnet and with less sensitivity and proximity effect(exact same curves, compare them). It was exactly what I was looking for as a companion to my e945s, but not at all a tone mic. I guess I'll just have to stick with my Shure Betas as tone mics for people who don't sing so deep or think it sounds better when they are grinding. I far prefer acoustic quality mics like the e945 and e838 over the Betas. I can sing in the Betas adequately, but they sound like mud to me compared to these two sweet Senn's(same reason I sent the e935 back).

    What the e838 won't do
    - give you an accented low end or heavy tone.
    - give you an artificial mic induced 4k bump, you gotta get it on your preamp or mixer.

    What the e838 will do
    - give you the flattest, smoothest cruise through mids low to high. Side by side the e838 sounds very much like the e945 with a 150hz bass cut. The e838 doesn't have as much depth or nuance as the e945, but I prefer it over my beloved e945 on higher keyed songs because the upper mids are smoother and more accurate, I didn't realize what the 8k scoop on the e945 was costing me in terms of push until I started on the e838! and the e945 is the comfiest mic I ever crawled up into.
    - give you the cleanest feed for effects, I couldn't believe the clarity in echoes, reverbs & synths. The e838 takes all the roughness out of effects that the Betas have(and a lot of people like?). It is nice and thin like the Heil PR20 but none of the tinny tone of the PR20.

So I don't recommend the e838 if you need deep or growly tone added to your voice, or you don't have a 4k mid eq to add on your mixer. In other words if you are more comfy hiding behind a mic's tone then stay away from the e838.

p.s. I held off a long time on writing this review until I was sure I had enough in my kit to last for fear you quys would buy them all up and cause the price to go back up. I think it's the best kept secret at Sennheiser. Yeah, the silver looks odd online but perfect on stage, and it is almost an identical match to the paint on the Shure KSM9 side by side. Hey, if that color's good enough for Daryl.....

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

Compared to a Shure sm58, much tighter low end and, that certain Sennheiser high end sparkle. If you have a lower register or a more powerful voice, this is the one for you. It cuts through the mix, not because of a higher output but because of the increased presence it has over a lot of other microphones. Feedback is really not an issue and the proximity effect you get with other mics is really not there (good or bad). I personally like it, it doesn't color the sound of your voice much at all. In other words, if you have a thin voice and depend on using the proximity effect of a mic to thicken your voice, this is not a good choice.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

We just started a new church and wanted some great mics but we just could not afford the real high end equipment at this point. My wife has used a 935 for years and it has been awesome so we thought we would try a few of these to see how well they would work. We were not disappointed at all ! If anything we were incredibly happy and will definitely be buying more of them as the church continues to grow. When we plugged in her 935, and replaced it with each of the 838's, we couldn't tell the difference. I also tested it against a Sure Beta58a, and found the 838 to be a little crisper.

I will say that all of the mics are currently used by female singers (country, southern gospel, and contemporary Christian music)......and the mics are excellent. Definitely recommend it.

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

I've used the Sennheiser E835 for many years with the same lead singer of a band for whom I run sound. At a recent multi-band concert, we encountered a pre-set stage with an E838 in the lead singer's position. I didn't have another E835 with me so I decided to use the E838. I was very surprised that the lead singer sounded better with the E838 than the E835 with increased clarity and presence. I didn't have to adjust the channel EQ to add any presence boost or reduce low frequency plosives. The mic did it all for me. As soon as possible, I ordered an E838 and will use it for many of the lead singers I run sound for.

BUY IT! BEST IN IT'S CLASS!!! if u can afford the e935 then do it, its the best, if not, do this, this is the second best in live vocal dynamics, unless u want a supercardioid, then go for the e845 or the e945

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

I've used all the "standards" at this price range (58, 835, etc). I had decided on the 835 until I heard this mic. This mic definitely cuts thru the mix. But not because it's super hot or loud. Rather, it's extremely clear with a subtle presence boost, and very little color. So, you can really hear someone using this mic, even at the same volume as other mics. Word to the wise, though. Because it's so clear, your voice will be heard and you can't hide back in the mix. Thus, you gotta be able to sing. But... as a result, the quality of my vocals have improved vastly since using this mic. Get it. You won't be disappointed.

Compared this mike side by side with my stand by 58.
Have to say, the presence and depth was much better.
Really sounded like the beta series, but a lot cheaper!
Don't know about the "roadworthiness" as this is for
a permanent church setting but it definitely has a
                      higher quality sound.
