Sure this thing is a tank, I've dropped it a few times yes. The foam screen behind the front metal cover is very thin, and erodes over time from your nasty alcohol breath. I replaced it with thicker foam, which took out alot of the pop. Just 4 screws to remove the front cover. I've had someone step on the on/off switch smashing it in, and my drummer and I doctored it back to health no problem. The final straw was the input would get stuck in the mic chord and stretch out the wires, ultimately ruining the ground. This was due to a stripped out screw on the side of the handle, and plugging, and uplugging repeatidly after practice, and gigs.. So I've retired this mic after 2 years of giging, house parties, and hours of band practice. Loved it, got tons of complements, it was a signature piece for the band, but this mic is ultimately meant to mount on a stand, and not rocked out in your hand.

As a blues/jazz musician, I got this mic for the retro looks. Well, trust me. It might not look as cool, but get a SM58 instead. The 55SH might have the looks, but after a gig or 2 with it, you'll go back to the sm58.This mic just can't handle a live gig. It might do OK for a bossa nova set at a smallish coffee venue, but that's about it. Your vocals will have no definition, depth or punch with this mic. Feedback becomes a little more of an issue, too.Because I own one, whenever I see one of these on the bandstand, I instantly see through the good looks and instead notice the pretentiousness of the singer. This mic costs more than an SM58, isn't as versatile, and sounds worse. Don't waste your money on accentuating your vanity.

Comments about Shure 55SH Series II Mic:
I like the looks of this mic for retro uses. I bought this one for a 40's-50's community theater event. I looks great and sounds good when used with a pre-amp. It does need a pre-amp to have clear sound and enough head room and will have a fuzzy sound without a some pre-amplification.

We displayed the Shure 55SH Mic and a chrome Mic stand in our Home Theater. Its Elvis former Mic and it looks terrific in the room.
Comments about Shure 55SH Series II Mic:
I have had mine for a year. I was drawn in by the iconic look, it was a fetish for me. As it turns out, it is an ideal mic for my purposes. My band practices in a SMALL space, and this mic excels at NOT picking up background noise. It has a small, focused sweet spot you have to hit but the sound is great and there are no microphonics to deal with. It is what it is, fantastic for dealing with loud, small spaces. Not made for use as a condenser or instrument mic but if you need a great mic that won't raise hell in your practice space, this is it.
Comments about Shure 55SH Series II Mic:
I love this microphone like a child! It is so faithful when it comes to recordings and gigs. I lead worship in a cockpit hanger. The acoustics in the hanger are so vast, that the mic makes the place sound like another world. On recordings, you MUST have a decent preamp to be able to give this baby enough juice, if not, the quality will be very fuzzy and it won't pick up your backup vocals or guitar like it is suppose to. Nevertheless, the mic is amazing, looks awesome and is faithful to give it'smax preformance whether I'm on stage or in the studio. I highly recomend this microphone to the serious musician! :)

Comments about Shure 55SH Series II Mic:
Never heard of this mic until I was playing at a private party and one of the other guys brought this for me to use. I didn't like it at first until I realized how directional it is. You have to stay right in front of it. After I figured that out I loved the way it made me sound, it has a very smooth sound. Plus no feedback from the PA. I also played 5 string banjo on a couple songs and really liked the way it picked up the banjo's sound, turned it up at the PA and still no feedback, picked up the banjo and my vocals no problem. Bought one the next day.
Comments about Shure 55SH Series II Mic:
First off, this thing is a tank. I dropped it out of a moving Van on the highway on the way to a gig and used it there. This mic has definitely made a number of people bleed. The look of it is obviously a huge selling point. I have not played a show that someone hasn't commented on how much they love my mic. The sound is alright, it's nothing extraordinary but let's face it, you're not looking at this mic for it's sound.
Comments about Shure 55SH Series II Mic:
I've gotten compliments on this mic at just about every show I've played. I play country/folk that sometimes gets a little rockabilly and this is the perfect mic for that style. I've used it on a straight stand as well as a tripod, and it was great on both (but it is heavy, so careful on the tripod). There's a lot of surface area, and you can get different sound depending on how you have it tipped and where you're singing into it. It doesn't feed back very readily, and I used to use it for recording. It picks up guitar and vocals pretty well, but I've since upgraded to a condenser for that (also a Shure). This mic is solid, really heavy and sturdy, and looks supercool. I tend to stick with brands I like, and I've never been disappointed with anything from Shure.
