I realize that using a guitar cable is the cleanest way to go. Unfortunately, I tend to wrap cables around my ankles or even worse, step on them and yank it out of my bass!
I had used an analog NADY Wireless for over 25-years but when the TV world switched to digital, I started getting interference and needed to replace it.
In my band I'm the only wireless player, but in church I'm one of 8. I needed a wireless system that could locate and lock on a clear channel quickly. The PGX14 system does just that with a push of a button.
I just bought the PGX14 last Friday. The sound coming out of my rig sounded great last weekend on both my gig and in church. I had a few of my musician buddies comment on how "Full" my Bass sound was. I was thrilled to finally retire my guitar cable!
You have to remember to set your channel with all of the other wireless systems turned on to locate a "clear" channel.
All of my basses are Passive. So I can't discount what some of the negative reviews reported.
The PGX14 system delivers a good, clean signal to your board or amp.
It's only been a week, but I'm very pleased with my purchase.

This unit is marketed as a guitar/bass wireless but it does not work for basses with active electronics. It can?t handle a hot signal and it clips way to easy. You will have to adjust you instrument and playing style to accommodate the unit and that is wrong. Also, there is no way to adjust the signal out (no attenuator)on the transmitter, and no volume adjustment on the receiver. I returned it and bought the AKG 450 which has both of those feature and costs nearly the same amount of money. The AKG 450 blows this unit away. There is no comparison. Also, the AKG 450 signal quality is phenomenal. Bass players don?t waist your time.

Nice sound, but no sustain!

By dleewilson

from Milwaukee, WI

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

I got this as a Christmas present, but after using it a few times, I am taking it back. I was impressed with the frequency response...nice and clear. But the sustain is terrible! I hit a chord, and after about a second, it dies out. I thought it might be something else in my setup, but when I went back to a chord with the same conditions, the problem went away. So if you want good fidelity at an affordable price, then this is the unit for you. However, if you want your notes to hang in the air for a little while after you play them, then stay away from the PGX14!

Lots of hiss, No Sustain

By Mezzy Shredder

from New Jersey

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

After reading the reviews here, I decided to give it a shot and purchase the Shure PGX14 Guitar Wireless System, despite what I had read. All of what I read was unfortunately true. As soon as I hit a chord, I could immediately could notice a slight difference in tonality. Their was barely any sustain when holding a note. The notes died almost immediately. Their was a loud hissing with my amp turned up only a little. I play Extreme Metal and notice that their is some sort of built in filter that takes away from the original feel of the notes as opposed to not using the wireless. You also have to align the frequency every time you put the transmitter on mute. They say it is a mute, however it works more like power switch because you have to realign the transmitter with the receiver every time it is put on mute. This seems tedious at a gig that you only have a few minutes to set up at. I decided to take it back and just go back to the cable.

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

Overall this is an awesome system. Highly recommend getting it. I actually like my tone better with the system then with my cable. Lets you run around on stage and whatnot. My only complaint is that it says you can change the channels on it to cope with interference from cell phones etc. but when i do the noise is still there. This has only happened to me once and i actually had to switch back to using a cable midset because the interference got to be so bad.
Great responce and range.
Great work. System seems strongly built mine came with a great carrying case. I've dropped the bodypack and receiver a couple times and they still work great. This system has seen plenty of gigs.

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

I just got this wireless not too long ago and it works much much better than I thought. I am so happy with it. I walked out of my house and down 5 blocks and it was still working crystal clear. It probably would have worked further than that even! The set-up is simple (Just turn it on) and it works. A great product to have!

Best Wireless for Bass

By bigwreck232000

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

I'm a pro bass player. I have used wireless sytems from just about every manufacturer and this one takes the cake for BASS PLAYERS. I'm not sure how older Shure models stack up but this particular model is worth the money for sure. I experienced almost zero signal loss with this unit and I play a six string warwick thumb with active pickups. One thing I will say, that goes for ANY wireless unit, is make sure you are using top of the line cabling throughout your rig. I used monster cables specifically built for bass guitars and the signal strength is much stronger through those than your average instrument cable. Therefore hooking in the wireless unit really didnt affect the settings, tone, or volume at all. The only downside to this unit is the cheapo wireless unit. The plastic is very frail and the small wire clip doesn't provide much peace of mind that the unit will stay on your body. Therefore, I reccomend you purchase a wireless unit protective pouch that you can attach to your guitar strap. That is a worthwhile purchase as well. Overall this is a great unit for Bass Players and worth every penny!

I am a Bassist and all I can say is that this wireless system is awesome. I have had it for about 6 months now and it's still running great. Doesn't take away from the tone of a cable and makes mobility much easier.

Great Wireless!

By Metalman_666

from Kitchener, ON

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

I took a chance by buying this unit brand new and sealed on eBay after reading many reviews about it. I unpacked it from its handy carrying case, plugged it in, pressed two or three buttons and it was ready to use! It's got something like 90 different selectable frequencies, an autoscan feature that finds the clearest one, and the transmitter syncs with the receiver almost instantly. The gain adjustment is alright, but not that effective, as you can choose -10db, 0db, or mic. Great reception though, absolutely no signal loss when using it indoors at a practice, or walking around outside at a gig!Overall it's a great unit, but I seemed to notice that whenever I used it, my tone through the amp sounded a little weaker, sort of like the volume control on my guitar was turned down just a bit. Not a serious problem but it bugs me a little. You might not have this problem, so I would definitely recommend this unit.

Poor Battery Life

By Wireless Fender StarCaster

from Cinti Ohio

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

Just bought the unit yesterday. Plugged it in easy enough , loved the freedom and the sound. Thought I turned the unit off properly last night( light went out ) and I unplugged everything. The batteries were dead this morning. Put new batteries in, rehearsed with band for about 2 1/2 hours and the new batteries died in middle of song. Not Happy. Don't like how plastic cover on transmitter opens either. A bit flimsey. May return within week. Takes two AA batteries = 3 volts. Bass player has Senhauser unit ( spelling ?? ) with one 9 volt battery in it. Great sound as well but his battery will last at least an entire night of playing show. I am really concerned about this choice...

There's Better For Cheaper.

By JaredJohnson900

from Milwaukee, WI

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

The shure system isn't bad, it's everything you would expect. But when a fellow friend of mine, (also a bass player) bought the AKG DW1000 GT Instrument Wireless System I was stunned. Not only did it sound as good but the battery life lasts longer. If I had the chance I'd just go with the AKG DW1000 instead of the shure for much more of a price. The name of the brand isn't everything.

Simply Good Gear

By Stratdogscott

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

I have had this system for nearly 2 yrs. Simple set-up, user friendly. Transmitter became erratic after about 6 mos. Returned to sure (hassle free) for repair. No problems since. All in all I couldn't be happier. I haven't had frequency drops that I hear some complain about. As far as range, I get a sound delay (Speed of sound vs. speed of light) way before signal loss. I would recommend this unit to anyone.

Acoustic use

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

It took me 2 rehearsals to get this tweaked to where I like, but the key is that I like it. I use this in an acoustic trio situation. I actually run the 1/4 out to my amp and the XLR out to my main PA.I really like how this sounds. I have to turn up the out on located on my guitar to almost full, other wise there is some fall off in sound and I lose sustain. I also have to turn down the bass on my amp to almost all the way down. I love the mobility I have and the sound, when I got it right, is very good. Easy to set up and easy to use. I didn't like the idea of AA batteries but it seems to be just fine.

SETTLE FOR NOTHING LESS!!!!!!

By Anonymous

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

When I got this system I was a little worried I have the same problems I had with the first wireless system I got. I DIDN'T! I walked around the entire house and even behind closed doors there is no problems. At practice I did the same and still.... NO PROBLEMS. The first thing I noticed was how clear the sound was and how it doesn't effect your tone or volume. It even stops feedback when I play my Gibson hollowbody at high volume. No problems with effects either. This system is amazing and perfect for the gigging musician!

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

My dad gave me this system for my birthday last year, and I have to say i am extremely satisfied with it. The sound is so clear, much better than even high quality cables. This thing is really durable, and it's awesome for any situation. I use it for gigging, and for just practicing around the house. It's worth it to get it - the cheaper ones don't compare, so save a little and get this! You'll be glad you did!

Issues with reproducing unison notes!

By John-rM18C

from Athens, OH

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

I recently bought this system and found that when playing unison notes (like when tuning your guitar by ear or using certain alternate tunings) the built-in compressor/expander pumped erratically, making for a very unmusical experience. I called Shure and one of their engineers confirmed that this is a known issue with the PGX14. If you tune by ear during performance, use alternate tunings that employ unison notes, or use a 12-string guitar, be sure to test this model extensively before committing to it. I'm very disappointed and hope Shure will solve this issue in the future.

I'm impressed

By woof71

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

I used to use the Sampson Airline wireless until it stopped working for me, so I decided to try Shure since they seem to represent higher quality as far as wireless systems. I have to say that even though this is not their high end unit it sounds great, I have not had any dropouts or interference from outside sources, sounds as good as using a cord.

Great Entry / Mid Level wireless system

By Prashanth

Comments about Shure PGX14 Wireless Guitar/Bass System:

Having switched to a wireless system from using monster cables (amidst trepidation of losing tonality), I must say, this unit has impressed me quite a bit. Setup was a breeze, tone remains rock solid (well...almost)...because, you will lose a small amount of bass/body in the process..but barely noticable unless you're jamming by yourself ....to a wall.I did find that the three gain settings, 0 db, +10 db, and -10 db on the wireless transmitter is best if left at 0db, but you can juice it up by adding more gain, but you might want to reduce some gain on the preamp side or the distortion drive side to prevent the sound from getting too hot and sounding sterile. The battery life is about 8 hours (of playing) as the manual says...so keep a pack o duracells ready.Over all, a great product, and comes with a moderately solid carrying case with it as well.
