As a broadcast radio personality, I have gone through a lot of headsets (cans). I have used expensive so called professional cans, and even bought from the local super center. At my last radio station outside the US, everyone shared one set of cans (kind of gross). It was a set of Sony MDR-7506 headphones. My personal set of cans were falling apart, so I tried the MDR-7506. I was amazed at how good they sounded and how comfortable they were. It was no problem to leave them on for extended periods when exterior noise was a problem. The trainee jocks were often rough on equipment, but the MDR-7506's stood up to some pretty severe abuse. The frequency reproduction was so good, that I got a pair to use for off air production. I had several brands of cans to choose from, but the MDR-7506 became my go to reference set. These cans outperform many of the more expensive brands and are a great value at the price. I plan to keep a set of MDR-7506's in my workplace, and at home.

I had been using a mix of different phones in my studio for years. The best were Stantons. I also had some Nadys, Pioneer and Koss phones. I have a 4 channel stereo headphone amp that I run from the mixer for recording. I was getting such different sounds through all these different phones that I decided to look for 4 pair of the same kind that had decent quality but wouldn't break the bank. After reading such good reviews on the Sonys I bought a pair to try them out. After listening I went back and bought 3 more pair the next day. Now I don't have to do nearly as much adjustment on phone monitor mixes and they sound incredible for the price. I sometimes use them for scratch mixes and settings and they have a much flatter response than any other phones I've owned. Of course, I would never do a final mix on any headphones because they can't compare in accuracy to a good pair of pro reference monitors, but the Sonys are close enough for rough mixing in your home studio at 3 in the morning. The only complaint I have is that the jacks are 1/8" with a 1/4" adaptor when they should be the other way around. Almost all studio gear has 1/4" jacks and these phones are supposed to be more for that type of use than with MP3 and portable CD players or they wouldn't have such a long cord. Other than that minor complaint, these headphones are by far the best deal for the money.

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Headphones:
The sound quality is amazing! I'm able to mix and master so it sounds professional. Other than the design making it feel like it could break, they are exactly what I needed to go to the next level.
Pros
- They sound great
Cons
- Bad construction
Best Uses
- Hobbiest Usage
Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Headphones:
They sound great for the money;but the things keep falling apart after one or so years of just minimal usage;or casual product usage and no product misusage!? This is my second pair in about 3 years;and there's already something wrong with the physical mechanical components;but not the sound parts of it actually. First time the ear pad arm broke off after 1 and half years of usage;then the next pair the ear pad fell completely apart! Bad construction on these units.
- Was this a gift?:
- No
Pros
- They Don't Make You Sweat
Cons
Best Uses
- Live Audio
Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Headphones:
Sure there are personal preferences for what may be "better", but you'll not see a more commonly used headphone in professional live audio. A pair usually lasts me about 5-6 years. They're relatively cheap, they "one-hand" well, they are small and light enough to usually tuck between case and console during use, they fold small for packing, and they don't make your neck sweat. In high humidity as day turns to cool night, you may have to unscrew the 1/8" to 1/4" adaptor and hit the contacts with an alcohol wipe, but that's just part of the deal.
Pros
- Excellent For Mastering
- Good value at this price
- Long Wear Comfort
- Stands up to abuse
Cons
- Heavy But Acceptable
Best Uses
- Great Radio Studio Cans

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Headphones:
I threw mine in the trash today. The coil cord is unnecessarily heavy, the ear cups are too shallow, and they are constantly mousetrapping into the folded-up position.
Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Headphones:
The sound, when they work, is EXCELLENT! But the quality is unacceptable.
Headphone features need is basic, good sound, and a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter is all I really need.
Although these are excellent sounding headphones the quality is extremely poor. I purchased 4 sets of these for casual use in a home studio. Of these only one is currently working well. 1 of them has a channel out, 2 of them have lost their lower frequencies, only 1 set is still functional. The padding cover has also peeled off on all of them. This all happened within two years of casual use.
Considering I have to repurchase new headphones and a life expectancy of 1 to 2 years these are a poor value.
Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Headphones:
the only redeeming value is the sound which is pretty good for listening to music with than tto mix /record with(which is what these are supposed to be for) .. the build quality and comfort of the headphones is downright atrocious.
the cord is coiled and crappy, the plug is 1/8th inch instead of 1/4 .. the size adjustor thing feels cheap and wiggles way too much.. the "closed back" allows for plenty of sound to bleed out, way too much for quality recordings.
also, im a guy with shaggy/long hair and every single time i wear these things my hair gets stuck in them and they rip my hair out upon removal from my head! painful and unnaceptable.
the quality on these are pretty bad. i bought a pair and the ear things kept falling off practically by themselfs requiring me to spend way too much time putting them back on . also mine broke within a few years of use.. the right speaker just stopped working.
while they worked the sound quality is decent for listening to, innacurate for recording/mixing to.
100 bucks for these? horrible value.
Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Headphones:
Fabulous headphones.
Absolutely the very best headphones I've ever had and heard. The sound quality is unbelievable. If you have a Bose Wave Music System these are the headphones for you. And alot less money than the Bose headphones. I made a great purchase getting these and look forward to hearing every instrument playing on the radio or CD. And Musician's Friend is the place to get these. Their customer service is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Headphones:
Great piece to have in the studio, as a reference, for the mid range they rock, low frequency is there too, loud as you can handle, perfect for the reference you need while laying down tracks or practice or recording monitor for musicians, you can get a decent reference to balance your recordings for a great Demo, highly recommended
