I'm using low priced Maxell Music CD-R discs from Wal-Mart and they work just fine. I wonder if the people getting errors are not using audio CDs. No, you can't just use any CD-R. The manual says that. It also recommends that you don't use CDRW, at least not if you want the best results. Anyway, to the machine itself: It's easy to use once you get the hang of it. When I first started, I used pause instead of stop and got lots of short, blank tracks. The next day, I worked on a demo and used only the stop button. I had no problems. Now, all the buttons you need to record are on the machine, and they are easy to understand. I was recording just a few feet from the machine, so using the remote would have been silly. However, you do have to use the remote to add titles to your tracks, if you are going to be that sophisticated.I did about a dozen tracks with no problems. Then I picked the best track and transferred it to another disc. No problems there either. The cords that come with this machine look really cheap, so you may want to buy some real cords from Hosa (if money is tight), ProCo (if you really want quality) or Monster (if you like throwing money away. Who actually pays for Monster cords?) but, you aren't buying this machine for the cords, so that's no big deal. And, the cords with the machine work just fine for most people, except they are really short.I also recorded from another CD player through the analog inputs, and it sounded exactly the same after going from digital to analog and back to digital. That's to my ears; I'm sure with the right equipment you might find some changes made. But, overall this machine is a great deal!

I wanted a simple to operate cd recorder to put my LP collectin on disc, and I was swayed by other on-line reviews and a salesman. What a mistake! The first one never did work right and the second one is very tempomental. If you want to make a "mix" of recordings on the same disc, this one is not for you. There is no way of knowing if it is actually putting it on the disk until you finalize it and then it's too late. It's not easy to change the settings for "outside" sources, ie a turntable, and whoever wrote the instructions did a bad job of interpreting. Dubbing disc to disc and playback of pre-recorded discs are fine, but I need a way to record for playing elswhere, too. I am now in the market for yet another recorder.

Good and Dependable

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

Haven't burned a "coaster" yet. Recordings are a little bright. I have burned many compilation cd's from twenty year old cassettes and are a little "bright". Just be sure to use audio cd's. A ood stand alone non-pc unit.

Consumer Quality

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

Had mine 5 years. Recordings come out brighter than input which causes many redo's while guessing at the EQ settings. Drops out of rec mode after a minute or so while you adjust the input mix. LH trays stopped working leaving 3 CDs stranded inside. Otherwise a decent product, but I'm moving on to something else.

Great Machine

By John B-ytAWu

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

I have read some bad reviews on this machine, but I tell you what.. for me this machine has been simply fantastic. It is a hell of a lot cheaper than other machines out there, and if you know how to use it, you will love it. The sound quality is excellent. For best sound use the optical input. It has been beaten up pretty badly since I bought it, and it still functions like new! Do NOT record over 70 minutes at 1 time, thats the only drawback. If you do, sometimes you will recieve an error message. Just record 70 min, then pop in another cd, then put together on computer.

All of a sudden...no workie

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

I've owned this unit for 5-6 years with hardly any problem. I suppose it's more complicated then some and the owner's manual could be clearer but I mastered everything on it, including many of my own copies. The shuffle mode NEVER worked as well as I hoped but no biggie. Xmas day '08 it stopped working! Doesn't recognize discs, trays won't open and NOTHING will play. So now i have 5 of my favorite xmas CD's stuck in the machine.... Now what?

It's Okay

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

It's good if you know how to work with Audio Equipment that's for sure. Wasted a lot of CD's it turns out you must use a MUSIC CD, MAXWELL works out best. You can record on a MUSIC CD then download that to your computer and use a data CD to duplicate on your computer. Keep the manual handy you'll need it to figure this out.

Does EXACTLY what it says it will do!

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

I am proud to say that I have been using this unit for several years now with NO problems whatsoever. The main thing to do is use the cds MUSIC cds only - not just any cdr blank cd because it can not record on those. I used this to transfer my band's audio from our live video recordings from our live recorded gigs from the past years down to cd and I could not have done that without this unit. The audio that you put/record to cd using this unit is what you will get on playback so the record level feature on this unit is priceless! I also used a 14 band stereo eq in between my record player and this unit while recording and all I can say is it is unreal! Get one of these!

not a bad DEAL!!!

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

This has turned out to be a great addition to my home studio. I've had the rcd 500 for a few years now and it's still going STRONG!! As a DJ?music producer, I need to be able to record with simplicity and ease, which this piece of equipment delivers. Facts to make it work for you: don't record more than 70 minutes, USE ONLY MUSIC/AUDIO CD-R/CD-RW'S, if it jumps to next track while recording, turn off auto track marker under menu option. great for recording live mixes and re-writable feature has saved me TONS of cd's.

Recording on a prayer....

By VideoProductions

from Brooklyn, NY

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

The ideal of a 5 Cd changer and a cd recorder on the same unit is good. However, sometime I will record a whole 1 hour sermon, just so that when I stop recorder, it reads " C10 error" and can't finalize the cd. I can't even play it back on this same deck. When I called the sony company, they said "your cds are corrupted" Save your money & but the Tascam. it cost more but its so worth it. THIS UNIT IS A NO NO!!!

Awesome Unit

By AK

from NC

Comments about Sony RCD-W500C CD Recorder:

I have bought 2 of theses units, one for my church and one for myself. I have used the units every sunday for over two years and during conferences. The only flaw I have seen is that it sems to only like the Maxell Music CD to record to. Also you must keep a good signal going to the recorder other wise it will jump tracks like crazy. But keep the signal going and don't allow the time to go over 76 mins and it works like a charm. I have the cds to prove it.
