It is gratifying to see that one of the old, great cartridges is still available. The 681 has been around since at least the 1970s and has always been among the top HiFi cartridges targeted at the pragmatic audiophile; that is, in the price range below the flaky, esotoric stuff. It has a very flat, uncolored sound with a moderate output level for a moving magnet cartridge. It is important to note that this is for audiophile vinyl playing and would likely be destroyed quickly by competition, scratch use. You should also be aware that if you have been playing your old, dirty records with a cheap cartridge, they will probably sound *WORSE* with an audiophile cartridge since the finer stylus will reach down into the bottom of the groove and scratch on the accumulated dirt down there as well as rattle around in grooves damaged by cheap cartridges. I sold HiFi gear in the 70s, when vinyl was still the only disk around and lots of cartridges were available, and settled on Stanton as my favorite representing what I thought was the best performance for the money and excellent performance regardless of price.
I installed my one and only Stanton 681EEE cartridge on a direct drive Panasonic turntable in 1975. It is still going strong after 27 years. What better recommendation than that???
