The Steinberg UR824 is a 1U, 19-inch audio interface that fits nicely in your studio rack. Its high-speed USB 2.0 lets you connect to your PC and Mac computer while the two pairs of ADAT I/O, eight Neutrik combo inputs with state-of-the-art D-Pre mic preamps and eight TRS outputs add up to 24 channels, providing ample ways to hook up all your musical gear and connect even to 7.1 surround setups. Its DSP-powered dspMixFx technology boasts latency-free monitoring in conjunction with the REV-X reverb and Sweet Sport Morphing Channel Strip effects.
Inputs and outputs as far as the eye can see
The UR824’s front panel hosts two Neutrik combo TRS/XLR connectors for balanced microphone/line input with switchable 48 volt phantom power and Hi-Z, pad push buttons for signal attenuation, gain controls with peak indicators. On the opposite side there’s a single output level rotary knob that allows you to easily adjust the levels of the eight line output signals alongside two headphone connectors, each with a dedicated level control. The output signal to be controlled by the front panel rotary is selected through the software.
The rear panel provides six Neutrik combo TRS/XLR inputs and eight analog balanced TRS outputs as well as two pairs of optical ADAT inputs and outputs. Also on board are two BNC connectors for –switchable word clock input and output. Developed by using advanced technologies to offer seamless scalability, this mixing and recording interface offers options to expand the number of analog inputs and outputs across the system via ADAT to provide up to 24 input and output channels.
For signal synchronization, the UR824 interface also features JetPLL, a patent-applied solution for audio network jitter. JetPLL provides the same performance as traditional, expensive clocking solutions found in the world’s best professional clocking products.

This thing runs great on my w7 64 bit cubase system. I had it up and tracking within 30 minutes. This unit has fantastic software mixer integration within Cubase. There is a standalone mixer you can use outside of Cubase, which is ok, but not as nice as the Cubase native environment. MAKE SURE YOU UPDATE FIRMWARE!!!!! Things were wacky with latency before updating firmware. It is easy to do, and it changes many things (all good things). Do this immediately after installing. Also, in Cubase, make sure you widen your mixer channel view so that the hardware inputs can be used. There is a tiny little graphic of a 3 way switch on the far RIGHT side of the hardware mixer channel. You can't see if if you have your channels too narrow. Those are my words of advice with this interface. If you are decent at Cubase, this is a real breeze to use, Yamaha guitar amp plugins sound fantastic, REV-X reverb is very useable as well. If you use Cubase control room, you can have 2 different headphone mixes, which is obviously a thing many people will need (I have a vocalist who NEEDS to monitor himself very loud while tracking). This has everything a home studio will need. When I eventually get an Ipad, the UR824 is CC, so it can boot up to accept Ipad for mobile multi tracking. If I ever need 16 tracks, I will just but a set of 8 preamps with adat, or buy a second UR824 and link. This is a smart interface. I had some drama with a defective unit at first, but steinberg tech support called me first thing in the morning to walk me through it. He helped me determine that it was defective. MF was great about doing the exchange first. They were out of stock, so I sadly had to wait, but I'm glad I waited and didn't opt for the cheaper focusrite scarlett or presonus unit. This also won out vs the Roland 8 channel usb. If you use Cubase and need 8 channel usb, don't even consider another interface. This is what you want.

I switched to the UR824 when I made the move to Cubase 7 under Win7 64-bit. It's great to have all of the interface functions controllable within the DAW. The interface set itself up in Cubase for the most part and has been rock solid as long as the instructions are followed and the interface is booted before the computer. Failure to do so results in the interface not being recognized by Cubase.
The preamps are very clear and uncolored with plenty of overhead. The UR824 is simple to configure and I love having two headphone outs. The display on the front tells me all that I need to know. The unit is built extremely well and the buttons and knobs feel solid and are very tactile.
The only improvements that I would make are to have 5-pin MIDI ports, but that is a personal thing. Phantom on every channel instead of pairs would also be nice to have. In addition, an expanded LED display for channel levels would be a good upgrade.
However, these are small points in the scheme of things. I'm very satisfied with my purchase and give it 5 stars.
