Dead on Arrival

Comments about Sterling Audio Sterling ST6050 FET Studio Condenser Mic Ocean Way Edition:

My wife was nice enough to buy this for me as a Stupid Deal for an Anniversary gift. I was excited to try it out but very disappointed to discover it was DOA. The mic itself and packaging looked really nice, but there were some subtle signs it may have been an open box. After contacting musiciansfriend I had to return it, and it couldn't be replaced because it was sold out and on backorder for months in advance. Musiciansfriend would not honor the price of the mic once it came back into stock. Understand, I've been doing home recording for 17 years now and have owned LDCs from MXL, Shure, Oktava, Studio Projects, Nady, Blue, etc. I've never had a mic show up DOA. This is obviously a quality assurance/quality control problem somewhere down the line on the manufacturer's and/or retailer's part. Considering the significant markup of this mic I'll likely never bother buying another Sterling. If musiciansfriend is selling these mics for the STUPID price that tells me it didn't cost the manufacturer half that to produce the mic, which means there's a huge intangible markup on this piece of gear. The regular markup for this mic is a rip-off IMO. My advice is buy a Blue Baby Bottle, an Aston Spirit, a Shure KSM (take your pick), a Warm WA-87, or a Shure SM7b with a Cloud Lifter for the same price point of the Stupid Deal option. At its retail price tag, the sky's the limit in terms of better options (the Neumann TLM 102 is significantly less than that and sounds better to me in the clips I've heard). Honestly, there are so many great options out there today between within the ST6050's variable price point that there's no need to waste your time and money on overpriced junk. I'm sure the mic sounds good, but lots of cheap mics sound good. Some sound better than others IME, but if the mic is DOA then it's pointless.

Allen Sides Delivers!

Comments about Sterling Audio Sterling ST6050 FET Studio Condenser Mic Ocean Way Edition:

I have been around the best of the best mic lockers for 25 + years including Ocean Way Studios.
I also own a bunch of $1K to $3K mics that are knockoffs. This Ocean Way
mod is now my "go to" Mic on my home studio. I A-B'd it with other so called recreations of vintage tube / FET designs, and I was pleasantly surprised on how much more musical this Mic is. It even has a touch of warmth on top not usually characteristic of a FET Mic. It is a perfect fit for vocals and acoustic guitar. Nice job Allen!

Comments about Sterling Audio Sterling ST6050 FET Studio Condenser Mic Ocean Way Edition:

This is a very large microphone that will test the springs of a boom stand. At the original asking price when it first came out, it was extremely over-priced for a Chinese-made microphone. Although the build quality seems sound, it does look a bit like a budget condenser with the chrome. I bought it at the reasonable price of a fraction of the MSRP, and I can't complain about the sound at that price. Holds its own with other microphones in that price range.
