Steven Slate Drums

A complete digital drum suite with 10 authentic drum kits, 2 sets of room mics, and more.

Steven Slate Drums EX contains 10 virtual drum kits including the famous Old Zep kit (an authentic Led Zeppelin model recorded in a stone castle) as well as 5 hybrid kits that use multiple layers of kicks and snare to achieve highly unique sounds. This complete EX software drum suite conquers all your digital drum needs with an RTAS, VST, AU, and standalone MIDI plug-in, instant presets for all Roland VDrum Modules, hundreds of easy-to-use MIDI grooves in SSD's unique SONG form. The Samples
At the heart of any virtual drum library are the actual samples themselves. Steven Slate has been called the master of drum sounds. In the early 2000s, his original drum sample disc was in high demand amongst many top Hollywood producers and mixers. By 2006, when he publicly released his first official drum sample disc, his sounds could already be heard in many top billboard hits. Today, the airwaves are filled with Steven's samples, as they are used by top mixers such as Mike Shipley, Chris Lord-Alge, Dave Way, Jeff Juliano, Jay Baumgardner, and more. Steven has recorded only quality drums, all tuned to perfection. Every drum and cymbal has been recorded first to 2" tape, enhancing their unique, rich sound. Every drum and cymbal was recorded with multiple velocities and multiple hits per velocity to ensure the most natural recreation. Then the samples were transferred to digital via high-end A/D converters at 24-bit/ 44.1khz. The samples were then processed by Steven Slate using some of the most classic analog gear from both past and present. The result are drums that sound like you've always dreamed of, with punchy transients and smooth decays. SSD Virtual Instrument
The SSD Virtual Instrument, powered by KONTAKT Player3, is a standalone or RTAS-VST-AU plug-in that is easy to use and integrate into your DAW. It contains both maps for keyboard and a universal mapping for Roland VDrums. With its custom velocity and remapping features, you can also customize your own maps. New in version 3.5 is the "Advanced AMG" anti-machine gun mode. This new algorithm is physically modeled after real drummers playing real drums. Advanced AMG makes the drums play with an extreme amount of realism with detailed response and sensitivity. Modeled Kits
While you'll probably find many of the drum kits on Steven Slate Drums are reminscent of drum kits you've heard from various bands over the years, 13 kits have been authentically modeled for a sound so close, you'll think it is the real thing. The initial EX pack contains the now famous Old Zep kit, modeled after the classic sound of Led Zeppelin. Upgrading with the EX expansions can get you all of the modeled kits, including: Steely Dan, Motley Crue, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Dream Theater. Keep in mind, these drum kits model the finalized mixed sounds that you have become familiar with, not just raw recordings of the drummer's kits. Room Mics
The Steven Slate Drums collection contains two unique sounding sets of room mics. The first set is from a large warehouse with concrete walls. These room mics were processed with heavy doses of compression, EQ, and even modulation to make a larger then life, deep, wide, expressive room sound. The drums were then sampled in the famous NRG Recording STUDIO A, known for being one of the top drum rooms in Los Angeles. It's been home to bands like Linkin Park, Foo Fighters, Billy Joel, and more. These room mics have been left unprocessed and contain the signature depth and space from this beautiful sounding room.

A Nightmare to Download but Worth It!!!

Features:

This program took almost 2 months to get downloaded and even then it still had compatibility issues. Because official CDs were on back order for several months we had to get a burned copy directly from SSD themselves.
Its not like most programs where you pop the disk in, rip, and start using. You really need to be pretty good with computers and understand FULLY how to unzip files and all sorts of other crap. I'm NOT a computer expert and since I work 70hr weeks I don't have the time or patience to figure this crap out. So thankfully I have a smart and dilligent wife to help me out.

If this program didn't sound 20% better than Superior Drums and Addictive Drums I would have gotten one of those instead.

Once you get it going though its awesome. There aren't a ton of kits in this program but its everything I need. I play all types of metal from 80's hair metal to European Melodic Death Metal. Plus I play punk and even dabble in Bluegrass. This program def satifies my needs.

I'm using an acoutic kit with some mesh heads and cheap triggers. An ION iDM02 drum module and a M-Audio 1x1 MIDI Sport USB interface. Took a little bit to figure it out, since there aren't any good tatorials out there. Turns out most issues you'll run into is driver issues. Just make sure they are all working and downloaded properly and you should be fine.

If you aren't tech swavy and don't have a godly amont of strong patience, just walk away. Get something much easier and simpler to use like Superior. However if you need something that sounds completely 100% realistic go with SSD.

Only gets a 9 because that downloading process what a nightmare. If it was more user friendly it would get a 10 without a doubt.

Steven Slate EX is a steal. You get several pre-made kits with superb sounding samples. I just used it to record and release a single on iTunes, and could not be happier. I have messed around for years with drum machines and multi-track recorders with built-in drums that just never worked or sounded right. Steven Slate drums sound right. The only thing that could be better is the addition on more pre-made midi grooves. But you can always adapt the downloadable grooves, or make your own. As to installation, it was a BIT tedious, but I am a midi noob and had no problem getting things working. Just follow the instructions and you should be fine. FYI - using with Reaper with great results. Computer is a lower end laptop, dual core, 4Gb RAM and Windows 7. Recorded up to 24 tracks with many, many VSTs with no issues.

This program is great.. if you can get the samples to load properly.      A friend of mine bought this a while back and its worked great for him.      So I figured what the heck and bought it. I loaded it, followed all of the instructions and when it came time to actually make music, I tried to load in some of the kits and it told me all of the samples are missing. It wont even let me load them in manually. If the support cant help me, Im going to BFD2.

The activation process is ridiculous when the link to activate is inactive. I was able to tap on the triggers to at least listen to the sounds and they were great sounding samples. I have installed software before that required a trip to the website, then to email and back but this one didn't come close to fully activating. Then the audio to my setup disappeared. I'm working with a brand new Mac Pro with an Intel Xeon 8 core processor (not that it matters) but this software did not work. I read reviews about similar problems with this brand of software and I will never purchase anything from this manufacturer. I never write bad reviews but this one pissed me off even though I paid close to nothing for it.

This software comes with 15 drum kits. My favorite is the Metal kit. These drums sound very realistic for the price. Velocity's are also excellent. This is the best drum software for the price. I've had EZDrummer (it's $150) and I prefer this over EZDrummer because it is way cheaper and you get way more. I also used the demo of Addictive Drums. Pretty good but for the price, Steven Slate wins. Bottom line, if you're looking for a virtual drum kit for under $100, this is the one.
