OVERVIEW

CD-quality recording with no menus to stand between you and your music!

The TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio makes recording simple by matching 8-track CD-quality recording with a Portastudio interface. Now you can ditch the menus and concentrate on the music. A pair of record-quality TASCAM mic preamps offers XLR inputs with phantom power for condenser mics and a guitar input for direct recording. Each channel gives you dedicated controls for instant access to fader level, record arm/track mute, pan, effect send, high and low EQ. There's also an EQ frequency button for finer control over the mix.

2 effects processors are included in the DP-02. A multi-effects processor on the input provides great-sounding overdrive, flange, delay, and more for your guitar, vocal, drum, and bass tracks. In addition, there's a reverb processor on a send and return for adding hall, room, plate, or chamber reverb to your mix. The DP-02 is loaded with great TASCAM extras like a chromatic tuner, metronome, and bar-and-beat display for getting around your song.

The DP-02 records 2 channels at a time to a built-in 40GB hard drive. When you're satisfied with your production, arm the dedicated master track for your stereo mixdown. You can transfer your tracks and mixes or backup your song to a computer through a speedy USB 2.0 connection or burn it to a CD with the slot-loading drive. No other workstation makes recording so simple, affordable and fun as the TASCAM DP-02.

ovrall.....the DP-02 gets a top rating. asy to use. Easy to buy
I bought this unit a few months ago, but I wanted to give it a work-out before I made any comments on it.

I have had no experience with recording before I bought the DP-02. There was a learning curve for me....but I was able to go throught the owners manual when I got stuck and I was able to figure out what I needed to know.

I am more than pleased with what the DP-02 can do. I have spent many hours working with it and I continue to learn and get better with every song.

some things I found that I needed: A recording headphone set....not something with "bass boost" or anything like that.....just a flat response st of headphones... Also condnser mics....(I have two MXL990) that you really need for vocal recording.....and don't forget a couple preamps for everything you put into your DP-02 (I bought 2 Bollinger Tube preamps... and it has the "Phantom Power" button that you need for your condenser mics).

DP-02 has "Phantom Powr on the unit....but it helped me so much to have pre-amps for the instruments and vocals.

I have found a few electric guitar effects that I like. Reverb for the DP-02 sems good to me.

The most important items I needed with my DP-02 was my MXL990 microphones and preamps.

the DP-02 is a GREAT unit. Not hard to work. Some learning is required.....but if I can do it, probably almost anyone can.

My highest recomondation is a nine....especially if money is an issue.
I have had no problems after 5 monthes of use. Very good quality for the money. Sliders and pots are noiseless. The spinning selectors are a bit cheap feeling....but they work fine.
great value

Let me start by saying the design of this product was very well thought out and the controls and features were easy to learn for a first-timer such as myself. If only it worked consistently...From the beginning, the unit would freeze up and display the message "HDD Busy Please PWR OFF" I quickly learned to save my work constantly. It took three tries and two weeks contacting the TASCAM company before I received a response, giving instructions on how to reboot the unit, erasing everything on the hard drive. I haven't tried it yet because I'm in the middle of a big project and do not have the time to burn everything to disc and reload it to the unit.I will post an update when I have tried their fix.

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

Internal bass sounds arent the best but that just forces you to get better at using the machine, Over all this is a GREAT Piece so BUY IT ! ! !
This is my First home recorder and as far as the features go I am still learning them ( had it about 3 months now ) But i'll say this so far, The features are simple to use and effective , The only thing that I would change is to have a 3 band EQ instead of the 2 Band, Other than that I love this recorder
VERRRRRRY WELL BUILT
I dont think you can find a Better piece for a better price than this

actively used it for 1 1/2 years

By john-Dq67C

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

I record tracks alone, one at a time, layering as I go. Make several songs a month. THis machine is perfect and is THE goto machine I use although I have others. No hiss, great sound, VERY intuitive out of the box. Recording is easy and pro sounding. The only limitations are:1)IF it is not close to your computer, you will have to physically move it so you can hook it up(USB) - disk burning data for transport gets old. my brother has the version with the flash card for transport which may be better in this senario.2)Does run out of memory after about 40 songs. thus need to clean out or transfer data eventually.3) Mixing the final tracks (fading/panning ect, when saving the master song)if you mess up mid song, you have to start over at the song start. (unless im missing something)4) internal speed when exporting the final song WAV's for computer transfer is a little slow (2-3 min?) - (but recording/mixing doesnt have any time delay)These are not deal breakers for me! still the best recorder for the money - pro sound

starter studio - hook, line and singer

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

Wanna get sucked into the recording field? Be it at the controls or letting those creative juices flow. This is the way to do it. Turn those quick ideas into mini symphonies. Quality sound good enough to turn that demo into diamonds. My buddy has a full blown studio and he said my demo was almost flawless. My true review.... turn it to 6.

1st time recording

By Glenda

from Grand Junction, Colorado

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

I had no experience prior to buying this unit, but have learned to navigate my way in one week's time. Several functions I still don't know how to use yet, but have produced 4 complete songs on a CD which sound very good. As a novice, I found the manual easy to follow. I did have to reread sections to fully understand them, but was expecting much more frustration than I actually experienced. I would recommend this for beginners like me.

Great for producing HIP HOP

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

excellent product.....thought more of as a multitrack geared toward a band....but im telling you if you read the manual, take about 3-4 hours of learning the buttons, you can acheive a studio quaility sound
the features contained within this machine are exactly what is need for hip hop production, but im yet to see a reveiw on this geared toward the hip hop producer, so here we go.....the PAN knobs make it extremely easy to lay down the main vocals, then lay down the double up vocal tracks, then pan one left, then one right....this is key for the hip hop sound......then the REVERB adds the warm and slightly echoed effect to make your vocals stand up.....if you are recording alot of tracks and dont want to use two tracks, the MONO X2 effect aollows you to record a pan left/right combo track one one track without losing any crispness from the sound.....the effects are STUDIO QUALITY, and the fact it has a 40gb harddrive and cd burner makes this a STANDALONE gem at the price
the build is GREAT....yes it is plastic, and at first you think it would break easily.....but it has withstood hundreds of hours of recording and continues to preform great without any failures
the best $$$ you could possibly spend if you are looking to record a solid sound with a limited budget

Review of DP-02 Digital Portastudio

By DIck H

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

Like I mentioned. MY band purchased this hoping we could make our own CD. When we received the device , it took us a while to learn how to record. The manual is not too helpfull . We had to watch video's off of youtube to learn how to record. After several months, we still have not figured out how to burn CD's and Master. We just ordered the Instructional Video, which was not included. The recordings are very good, and once we learned to record, we have enjoyed using the device. You can only record 2 channels at once . It would be nice to have more channels to record at once onto. We are veterean musicians that have been around music and recording for over 20 years. The cassette 4 tracks were way easier to learn to use!
Once you start learning how to Navigate - it's not too hard to use.
so far the quality of the recordings have been excellent . Our band has been using this for several months and recording . We have not figured out how to master or burn CD's yet. The manual is useless. There is an instructional DVD that we just ordered seperately.
The Price is good. Very difficult to use. The manual is not very good. In fact, it is very awful and difficult. We just ordered the Instructional DVD, which was not included?. Everything myself and my band mates have learned so far is off of watching you tube videos.

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

Another thing I want to mention is that I see a few people that say it crashes and they lose all the data. I've not experienced this, but it will tell you in the manual that you should save your work often. But isn't that how most computers are? I had to learn a few things when I got started too, with other aspects, but as you read the manual you pick up fast. I still learn about functions I didn't even know this recorder could do. I'm more than happy with my purchase. It really comes down to vocabulary and navigation with this one. Very user friendly and informative. Thanks Tascam.

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

I bought one of these in march and I love it. I'm new to recording and let me tell you that I have no regrets. I've made some music that I had no idea I could put together. There is nothing instrumental wise that you cannot do. The quality is studio and crystal clear. There is a little learning curve on controls if your new to this, but nothing that takes for than a few minutes to learn using the manual. The only way anyone could complain about this is if they were just flat out sent out a dud, which the odds are slim, or if they just didn't take time to read for a couple minutes before thay got started. I'm stoked about my purchase and you will be too. For the price this will get the job done and the quality will be better than you expect. Have fun.

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

I have used computer software that you had to tinker with, and still can't get it the way you want it.This recorder is hands on ,you can do any with it without a computer. Sound quality is great, the effects on the board are great , easy to use even if you just quickly go threw the manual fast. You should read the manual any way to get more info on the advance featchers.Very well built. Records CD's fast , mine came with a 130 GB HD not a 40 GB witch is a bonus and the firmware was upgraded higher then what the Tascam web site showed, another bonus. THIS RECORDER IS GREAT!!!!!!

Get the Tascam DP-02, it's the way to go for making demos and more..
So many effects, and there realy good.
Very rugged steel encloser.
You can't beat the price for what this 8 tracks got!!

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

I'm very pleased so far! I have had a DP-004 for a few years, and I 've turned out some very good recordings. But the DP-02 is far more superior to me. It was a tremendous help knowing the
general workings of the unit from previous experience with DP-004. So far I have had no problems
recording or burning CD's, I would recommend this unit for quality & price!
Has great built-in features, easy to use.
Quality of recording is outstanding.
A great tool for home recording.

Dissappointed- Bieging blues

By Charles Ruiz

from Miami, FL 33134

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

I went through three DP-02 portastudio's before giving up. The concept and design is great, portable, digital, burns CD's eight tracks, great! But the 40 GB hardrive has a flashing LED access light when ever the drive is recording, and the LED creates a skipping record type of sound each time it fashes, and the sound is recordeded in your mix. Too bad, unacceptable. The Tascam tech said it should not do that, and to send it in for rerair. Sorry, three strikes and you're out. Made in China Bieging Blues, this could have been a great product, but it's junk if it doesn't work! I still want one, if anyone has a suggestion it will be greatly appreceated.

I am a brain-dead drummer (when it comes to recording), so I needed an easy to use, great sounding recorder for my home studio. I use this recorder for everything. I go direct with my Roland TD20 kit, and can add killer bass, keys ,etc, from my Fantom X6...mix em down and burn a cd! Great for songwriting and work tracks!! Love it!!

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

I ordered this back on June 4th but it was on backorder, I almost settled for something else about a month later (since it was still backordered) but now I'm so glad I didn't. It came in the mail 3 days after it said it was off of backorder. It's so easy to use. I just can't figure out why my CD volume is so quiet. It's the easiest thing to use, the quality is great. The effects on it are alright, but I tell you, if you have a sound you use regularly, just plug it in to the input and the sound is perfect. No hum or anything. I love this thing. Pulled it out of the box, read parts of the manual (mainly "how to record") and I was recording on day 1. Buy this, you won't regret it. If anyone knows how to fix my volume problem, please e-mail me.
