OVERVIEW

When getting your ideas down quickly is not enough . . .

TASCAM's DP-02CF Digital Portastudio has enough recording power to let you create a full production at 16-bit/44.1kHz CD quality. The DP-02CF combines 8-track CD-quality recording with a Portastudio interface.

The DP-03CF Portastudio's one-button-per function design is for musicians who want to record quickly and have fun! First, record your stereo drum machine using its 2-track simultaneous recording, and then use the line inputs to record bass and layer guitar parts. A song position bar/beat display makes it easy to overdub. Or, if you're going the straight acoustic route (no drums), use the internal metronome to keep time.

Next, use the low-cut filter, two-band EQ, and pan controls to make sonic space for your vocals, which you can record with a high-quality condenser mic thanks to a pair of matched TASCAM preamps with XLR inputs and phantom power. There's also an EQ frequency button for finer control over the mix.

When you're happy with your tracks (and you should be happy with a DP-02), mix down to a dedicated stereo master track and save your final mixes to an included 1GB CompactFlash card (The DP-02 records two channels at a time to the card).

Finally, you can transfer your tracks and mixes or backup your song to a computer through a speedy USB 2.0 connection for MP3 encoding or CD burning from your Mac or PC. Let the fun begin!

I'll start with the good. It's incredibly easy to use setup, start, import and export also its inexspensive. If you want something to record your riffs throw on solo's listen to them later this is the thing for you. The bad, this particular has no effects for you to use which to some isn't important but I was very disapointed. If your in a band and you want this to record your songs to cd and to show people , sell , ect this unit is not for you. If you want something that can capture your idea's and store your general sound then this is perfect. This isn't your cheap ticket to good studio sound. It can however allow you to get your ideas "down on paper".

great little unit

In just a few minutes, I was up and recording. The unit is intuitive, with sliders and pots, as opposed to menus and what not. It's easy to use, and makes a good quality product.

Well worth th money

Ask me a question

This is a nice little unit. I have had numerous recording units over the years, and for the money, this is a steal. I wish you could find a unit that could record more than 2 tracks at once for a reasonable price, but I can't complain too much as this is a pretty easy unit to use and seems very well built. Is heavier than I thought it would be, but feels very sturdy. Sliders are smooth. USB connection is nice to have for backup. Sliding door for Flash Card is very well thought out. Would like 3 band as opposed to 2 band EQ on individual channels and possibly an overall 10 band EQ for the final mix. Would like more inputs so this could mix drums without a seperate sub mixer. Would like the monitor to flip up to be easier to read if not on top of the unit. But for the price, this is a high quality unit. Can't wait to see what I can produce on it!!

Great Unit

I use this to record demos for songs I write as well as record with the band. This unit works great for either. We record tracks to .wav file using this unit then export them to the mixing software of our choice to mix and master. The unit is durable and for the price, cannot be beat in my opinion.

What a bang for a buck

By Neil Michigan

from Motown, Michigan

This 8 track digital is incredible for any level of musicians that want to make a clean band recording and perfect for one man band.Very easy to operate and pretty strait forward no trict at all. Even for the people that never had recording experience can take several minutes to figure it out. Read the Manual and follow it closely then you will never have to complain. The look is very sexy, button is so easy to engage and push the touch is excellent. A lots of options to play with. You will love it for a long time. This is one of the best of chance for you to impress you friend, relative about your music and your sound. Again read the manual before or during use it. Don't listen to the negative feedback. Tascam and this site are highly trusted.Good luck and have a good music making.Experienced Multitrack recording user.

SIMPLICITY

By Solo Artist

I am enjoying the simplicity of this unit. I chose not to get all the effects and burner. I mix and master on my computer with Cubase SE3. I AM NOT a recording engineer or a wanabe. I am a solo musician so just keep it simple. I use a Shure KSM 27 and a tube pre amp (Pick any one you like) The mic with a pre amp is fantastic.

I just got the recorder the other day and I must say so far so good, this machine shurely does beetthe early tascam tape recorders, yea it takes a while to learn how to master it, but it is defentily worth the task. When I got it out of the box it took me about three hours to learn how to oppereate it, then I pluged it up and tried it out, and it blew my mind, it was the best sounding recorder I have ever herd for three hundred dollars I would recomend it to anyone who wants to start out cheap, but have good sound, I recomend using two MXL 990 condenser mics so you would have more of a stereo sound.

SWEET!!

I got the Tascam DP-02CF for Christmas and I love it. It took me a little while to figure it out, (and there's still stuff I haven't figured out yet) but once I did it was reeally easy. The memory card it comes with is only one gig so you can't hold too much on it. And it didn't come with a usb chord, and I'm not sure what to do about that.

GREAT INVESTMENT FOR SERIOUS MUSICIANS!

By benshermantheshredder

from Lebanon OR

I bought this took it home and played with it and read the manual and it has quite a few features. Then Istarted recording with it and I found if you know haw to hook everything up the right way into the recorder you can get some amazing quality recording. This recorder has made me so happy and so excited to record way more than other recording software and machines i have used b4. I'm currently recording my own project and another band, and soon I'll be recording another band. I really dont think you will be disapointed with this machine especially since it is just three hundred dollars. Just make sure you have everything you need, like usb cable (I would also suggest getting a larger flash card), good mics, nice guitars, and shweet effects. All in all, if you want awesome results you need to have quality gear.

Very Impressed!

By Shadow-eyr8d

from Dallas, Tx

I purchased this recorder for making demos with my band and was a little worried that it might not be up to the task. I had also heard that it could be hard to operate for the non-recording engineer type, so when it came I read the manual a couple of times and then took it to band practice. We had it up and running in very short order and actually got a couple of full tracks recorded! The sound quality is fantastic (easily as good as some "pro-studio" stuff we had done) and once you get the hang of the controls, it's pretty easy to use. One thing I like is that after you master the track you can export it as a wave file, which means it saves it as such on the card. You can then either use the USB connection to dump it to your computer or simply put the card in your computer's card slot (if it has one) and read it straight from there. The included card is a bit small (we only got two tracks on it) but that can be easily fixed by getting a bigger card. All in all this is one of the best buys I've come by!

how easy is this!

By beegee

from californ-i-a

it took me less than 10 minutes to have this out of the box, plugged in, and recording. it is quite user friendly and any problems that you come across, the manual does a good job explaining actions that you need to fix your problems. the lack of effects compared to the dp-02 is kind of a bummer, but for a couple hundred less i can't really complain. recording quality is great and for not having much multitrack recording experience i am very pleased with this recorder. if you want a simple way to record from home..... this is it!

Money Wasted

By Mark R.-zfO7g

from Undisclosed

These portastudios are crap! If you want to buy something that is gauranteed to crash within a year, then this is for you. I've gone through two of them now. It's a shame, because when it actually works it's user friendly and an overall good product. However, like I said, crash; crash and crash.

Great Unit ...

By Cruzzzn

from Toronto

I just received my DP-02CF and within minutes was up and recording. Very easy to setup and sound quality is great for a recorder in this price range. Learning the way the menu options work is a bit tedious at first but once you get the hang of it, you'll have no problems. I haven't used the unit up to its full potential as of yet but for simple recordings, you can't go wrong. If you are looking for a simple recording unit and on a budget, I fully recommend this unit.

This piece is sweet!

By carl-NAufm

from new jersey

My brother bought this recorder to record his solo project, but purchased a better one, so he passed it down to me, it is a little confusing starting out. But has great sound if you can get the right condensers to use with it. Once you get use to operating this, it is simple, just a quick couple buttons and your set to record. It is great for creating demos for a band or just a side project for solo arists. I have not yet, found any problems with this and hopefully won't. Good shopping!

Perfect for what it is

By swelland

from Hot Springs, AR

Quick, easy to learn, user-friendly. Allows connection to your effects, so contrary to previous reviews, it CAN be used to turn out a final product. Now, if this is the only piece of equipment you own, then expect a "what you hear is what you get" recording. This is NOT a high-end recording studio, but the results you can obtain from it get close. Perfect for capturing demos. The price alone makes this a steal. Add the quality and ease of use, it's the crime of the century.
