Comments about TASCAM DP-03 Digital Portastudio (SD/CD):
I will never buy another Tascam product. This was the first Tascam recording device I purchased and shall be the last. There's a "SD-Write busy" glitch that occurs on here. For example, you will be in the midst of mixing down a song and then all the sudden, it starts to skip all over the place. Then..it freezes, and then "SD Write busy" displays on the screen and then you are forced to turn the device off and back on. If you're lucky, it may not do it again, but more than likely, it will persist. I had a song that I tried numerous times to mix,and it constantly kept glitching up at the exact same time everytime. You can just imagine how frustrating this really is. Do not buy this. Spare yourself the frustration. Don't buy any Tascam recording device for that matter because I've read that they're all very glitchy.
Go with a better brand because this glitch is extremely irritating. Had it not been for this glitch, this would be a pretty sweet device, but no.

If I went to the school of technology I'd be riding the short bus! But, even I was able to start using this thing right out of the box and am nothing but impressed with the results. This machine is capable of doing so much and I really don't think you can beat the price. If your on the fence about buying the Dp-03 I say buy it!

Comments about TASCAM DP-03 Digital Portastudio (SD/CD):
I have been playing for a very long time and decided to make a home studio. The DP 03 just came out when I bought it and it has come down in price since. You will need to buy a larger SD card than the one that comes with it but it is fine to get you started. I bought a sixteen gig card for very little money. The quality of the recording is excellent and burning the music right on to a CD makes the unit more self sufficient. It was not intuitive to know how to use the unit although I have never tried one. The manual was my best friend early on.In the end the sound quality of the recording/CD is most important and this unit will satisfy that. I am very happy with the quality of the DP-03.

The Jog wheels flexibility makes this machine so easy to use.
I bought the Tascam DP-03 because I was getting so frustrated with the problems of using music software and, I longed for the days of when I could edit like I did with a razor knife on tape.
What I found was more than that. The amazing thing about it was the learning experience of using compression levels to make that recording shine. I have used compression in the past but, the machines are complicated and time consuming. The Tascam, laid out the way to use compression in a better way with easier language. This machine does everything but sing. From the Jog wheel to the fine recording textures you can achieve; you won't feel you wasted your money. What makes it different than the Zoom machine? Flexibility!! How many hours was I recording? 14. I simply love this machine.
Comments about TASCAM DP-03 Digital Portastudio (SD/CD):
I tested this for a friend and was not impressed.
Tascam took a proven winner, the DP-02, ditched the internal 40GB hard drive, and replaced it with a slot for an SDHC memory card. The purchaser loses 38GB in storage space, because the unit only comes from the factory with a 2GB card. While the possibility of simply swapping memory cards when one becomes full is attractive, since it is easier than swapping a hard drive, the memory cards are not cheap. The least expensive 32GB I could find on Tascam's approved media list has a street price of $65. Coupled with the fact that this has a street price which is priced higher than the DP-02, that means an investment of at least $130 more than what the DP-02 costs in order to approximate its storage capacity.
Cost aside, the second reason for switching to memory cards as opposed to an optical drive is that memory cards are about as flimsy as the old 3.5" floppy disks--they won't hold up over time. Like old floppy disks, they are also prone to damage from exposure to magnetic fields, unlike data stored on an optical drive.
All in all, idea behind it [more portability] is great, but the execution is not well thought out for those of us who want a small all-in-one unit for a small project studio, don't have a fortune to spend, and don't want the learning curve of the 24-track flagship of the Tascam line.
The Zoom R8 costs $200 less, and will do anything this can do with the exception of burning CDs. But that's what I have a computer for.
No features which are not found in other units costing less. Compare to the Zoom R8, which is less--this means the purchaser is paying for a CD burner, which is the only feather this has that the comparable Zoom Unit lacks.
The build is flimsy compared to comparable units from Boss and Zoom.

Comments about TASCAM DP-03 Digital Portastudio (SD/CD):
I love this recorder - it is easy to use and intuitive and produces studio quality recordings. I'm a professional saxophonist and have used several studios to record my music. This recorder does every bit as good as these studios. The only drawback is that the reverb allows up to 3 seconds - I wish it would allow more.
