Album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

TASCAM's DR-05 brings high-quality stereo recording to an easy-to-use portable powerhouse with a size and price that anyone can handle. The DR-05 records in MP3 or WAV format, including 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio to microSD or microSDHC media. A pair of all-new microphones handles up to 125dB SPL with the sensitivity to capture every detail. With new recording features like Peak Reduction and Quick Menu, the DR-05 puts album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

Premium-quality Sound

Everything about the DR-05 is designed to get the best quality recordings of your music. A new pair of built-in microphones withstands up to 125dB SPL —the volume of a jet plane from 200 feet away—yet still have the sensitivity to capture every detail of a performance. You can add your own microphone or line-level source through the 1/8" stereo input, including plug-in power for microphones that need it.

Internally, the DR-05's digital and analog circuit boards are built separately to improve noise performance, with a low-impedance design to further decrease hiss. A separate power supply is sent to the A/D and D/A converter for even better audio performance. The result is clean sound quality —over 92dB signal-to-noise ratio; under 0.05% total harmonic distortionl and 20Hz to 40kHz response (-1/+3dB) at 24-bit/96kHz resolution.

Simple to Operate

The layout of the DR-05 has been revamped to be quick and easy to work with one thumb. Operations like recording, adjusting levels, deleting bad takes and adding markers are just a button-press away. Dig deeper to find features like limiting, low-cut filtering, a built-in chromatic tuner, and more.

One new feature that makes the DR-05 easy to operate is the new Peak Reduction feature. This setting automatically sets your recording level by listening to the input and adjusting for the best level. Unlike Auto Gain settings, this one only goes down to prevent accidental distortion after a period of low level like a break. Peak Recording works in rehearsal mode or in record, so if the performance is louder than the soundcheck you're still safe. Used with the built-in limiter, it's unlikely you'll distort your career-making live recording.

Other classic TASCAM features are included, like Variable Speed Audition to loop and slow down music without changing the pitch—perfect for transcribing or learning new music. A Level Align function can be switched on for playback to smooth out any sudden volume jumps, and a built-in speaker is also provided. The two AA batteries are enough to power the recorder for 17 1/2 hours, even while recording at CD quality.

This recorder is very easy to use. Basically its a one button operation for normal recording situations. Lots of custom setting that I probably won't use but good to have. The sound quality through attached headphones is real good. Same good sound quality when transfered and played through a computer. However, listening through the internal speaker is lame. Not even on par with the cheapest cell phone speaker. Basically useless. If the internal speaker was better this baby would have received a 5 star rating. Buy it if you don't need the internal speaker. You won't be disappointed.

After two weeks of use, mine is going back. I found it too noisy to make decent ambient recordings. Ok, fine. It's cheap. I thought I'd keep it around as a song writing scratch pad. Well, problem with that is, this thing chews through AA batteries like mad. The ones that came with it were dead after about 20 minutes of use. I thought they were just bad. Brand new duricells lasted about an hour. These two things in tandem - too noisy for good field recording, battery hog - kills the deal. Maybe I got a faulty device. I'll do an exchange with MF and repost a review if it was simply bad luck.

Comments about TASCAM DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

Bought mine two years ago. Impressive Sound: one thing through headphones and then a step up after easy download to my iTunes (love the wave/mp3 options) in sound quality. Very sensitive mics, voice/instrument split volume controlled simply by placement (I use a camera tri pod). Favorite pastime=Put on headphones/plug in/ press record/DO NOT hit start arrow/Play!! Clarity. As in whoa!!! I can hear my stomach gurgling through the guitar soundhole via my headphones. I value clarity above volume ( most of the time) and this little unit performs. These "live" sessions do eat batteries. Very easy to use, as I was recording in short order. Controls handy. Good easy to follow menu in common sense language/indexing. MP3/Wav option. Would be nice if screen lighting would stay lit longer after selection....realize cost/size/battery power is a compromise. Taking all that it is for the cost I am most satisfied with this unit. Have bought two more for gifts. Very affordable, efficient, and convenient. Play more music!

This is great for the price. Mic has a strong pick-up. The play back sound is great through your pc and studio monitors. Once you get through the directions..you can navigate it pretty easily. It even has an internal tuner! The "zoom accessories package" works great with this! The charger works as well, just use the tascam usb with the zoom charger! The case is a little too short, but everything elso works perfectly including the windscreen. The batteries don't really last all that long, BUT if you use the charger or usb to your computer..you don't need them :)

Comments about TASCAM DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

The DR-05 is perfect for rehearsals. I average 3 musician for hire jobs a month besides our own band gigs, and it has been a life saver. Very user friendly, and you can't beat the uses to price ratio. I put a 2G chip in the thing, and it records at 320kbs for 14hrs. I might suggest investing in some rechargeable AA batteries, and charger. Then you'll always have juice. I've semi sold several DR-05's just from people inquiring what I'm using at rehearsal to pickup hooks, turnarounds, beginnings, endings, harmonies, keys, etc... When your plowing through a 3-4hr. setlist quickly it's easier to go back, and listen to what you learned about each song than relying on your memory, or sitting there writing notes, and slowing down the rehearsal time. It can go with you anywhere when recording is needed. PS: I bought a cheap carry case for my DR-05, and have used it hard for three years... It still works perfectly, and I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

Just got mine yesterday, and can't put it down! Amazing sound quality from such a small unit that seems to be well constructed. MF always delivers with units that are well worth more than their cost. Prompt service too. I live in the "sticks" in N orthern Michigan, and had mine in three business days!

Comments about TASCAM DR-05 Solid State Recorder:

I read the review of the DR-40 in a guitar mag, looked into it and then saw the DR-05. It seemed like the unit I was looking for.
I play Bass guitar in a Rock/ Country band. We are newly formed and are writing our own material.
On practice night, one of us sings and plays a song and then we try variations of it. I thought we needed a small recorder to keep track of the compositions and arrangements.
Enter the DR-05. I set it up on a tripod in the middle of our practice room ,turned it on and we played. Playback was instant, plugged into our PA the quality was outstanding, we were all blown away.
Now , every practice I bring it along, record the evening, download the songs later and email them out to all band members. We are all thrilled! At first I didn't know what format to record in and did it in WAV. The files were far to big to email, so I converted them with a free download of Format Factory and sent them out in Mp3 format.
Now I record in Mp3 format, so converting is not required. LOVE the DR-05!

Used to record practice sessions for band. Makes great recordings in mp3 mode on a tripod, using the built-in mics. As long as outside noise doesn't interrupt, it makes what I consider high-quality recordings, easy to transfer and process with Audacity. It takes some familiarization time, but the results are worth it.
