TASCAM

A versatile 16-in/4-out, 24-bit/96kHz interface bundled with Cubase LE5.

The US-1800 audio interface from Tascam offers a high amount of inputs for a minimum amount of cash. The US-1800 features up to 16 inputs and four outputs that are transmitted to your Mac or Windows computer over a high-speed USB 2.0 connection. There are a total of eight XLR microphone inputs with phantom power and 60 decibels of clean gain, as well as six balanced line inputs, stereo digital I/O and MIDI in/out. Also Included with the US-1800 is Cubase LE5 workstation software from Steinberg. This 48-track audio workstation includes must-have features like automation, plug-ins, mixing, editing and MIDI tracks.

US-1800 rackmountable 16x4 channel interface
TASCAM's US-1800 packs 8 mic, 6 line and two digital inputs into a single rack unit, more inputs than most interfaces in its price class. The 16-in / 4-out interface works with nearly any recording software from budget to pro, including Logic Pro, Live, Nuendo, Digital Performer, Fruity Loops, and Pro Tools. It’s compact enough to carry to live gigs, or mount it in a rack in your studio.

In addition to the digital input and output, a MIDI input and output is included for interfacing with synths and drum machines.

Full-featured inputs
Eight microphone inputs are provided right on the front panel for easy access. Phantom power is available for condenser microphones, and plenty of gain is available for recording virtually any source. Also on the front panel is a pair of 1/4" inputs. Each of these can be switched to instrument level for direct recording of your guitar or bass.

A direct monitor path is available during recording to prevent the delays that can occur when recording to computer. This allows the musician to hear the input directly to the output without any delay so that timing isn't distracted by echos.
A total of six balanced line inputs can be attached using the front and rear panel jacks. A set of balanced line outputs are provided to connect to monitors, and a S/PDIF digital input and output is provided for use with high-end synths and processing gear. A stereo 1/4" headphone jack is also provided for monitoring.

Cubase LE5 Included
Included with the US-1800 is a copy of Cubase LE5, a 48-track workstation application with the features to create polished productions. VST plug-in support, automated mixing and MIDI tracks allow you to craft large productions without adding any other software.

If you want to use your own software, the US-1800 supports most Mac and Windows software such as Logic Pro, Live, Nuendo, Digital Performer, Fruity Loops, and Pro Tools.

Picked up the US-1800 to record my band's demo on (as well as get my home studio up and running). So far I've had the thing for one day and my mind is blown.16 inputs, 8 xlr with pre's, 2 digital ins, 2 guitar/bass ins. WHAT???!! Simply put there is NO other interface out there that can get you that many inputs for this price. You'll spend $500 at least for mediocre equipment (like presonus stuff)...not only is this thing cheap (which makes it perfect for our low budget demo), but it performs really well.So far I've had this thing running just about every type of mic and instrument we could throw at it today and it really impressed me. I figured for the price the thing would be really noisy...no noise at all and not a single problem with latency despite the USB connection. Had it all hooked up in less than 5 minutes with my MacBook Pro and was recording in Logic a few minutes after that. Now that the good part is out of the way...time to address the bad things (which are rather minimal):1. The phantom power switch was not designed very well. It gives you the option to run +48v to either inputs 1-4 or 5-8. Biiiiigggg issue if you're recording drums that require more than 4 dynamic mics. You would have to run any other dynamics through an external pre-amp into one of the line inputs. Luckily, I play a 4 piece kit so I was unaffected, but I can see this being a serious issue for someone, phantom power should be selectable per input, it'll blow out dynamics real quick.2. Headphone output could be better. Then again that's a quick fix with a quality headphone amp through one of the outputs in the back, a lot of interfaces skimp on the headphone out quality.Overall this interface is absolutely killer for the price. There's literally no other way to properly record drums for under this price. You will not be disappointed. Build quality is even good, all metal casing, gain/volume knobs have a solid, expensive feel to them, all the inputs are solid connections as well. For those of you having issues: maybe you should be looking at your COMPUTER AND DAW instead of the interface. I'm running a MBP with 4gb of RAM. No issues here....your interface can only run as good as your computer can.

you can't get more inputs/outputs for the money, that's for sure. Though the headphone output is a hardwired copy of the monitor output, there are two additional line outputs you can use to drive a separate headphone mix, or to sidechain outboard equipment, etc.

The main issue is that the os x drivers are pretty bad. This is *not* a class-compliant core audio device, meaning you *must* install Tascam's driver to use it on OS X. The driver eats inordinate amounts of CPU on my late '08 macbook pro (which I've used with many other higher cost professional interfaces with no problem).

I suspect (hope) Tascam will sort this out with a new version of their driver (though I've already got the 2.0 version installed and it's just as bad).

Overall though, not bad at all for the money and cpu issues can be worked around in a pinch.

Comments about TASCAM US-1800 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Interface:

I am highly disappointed. This was my second tascam product, the first one works still to this day, but only had two channels to plug into. I wanted to expand to cover a drum set. It worked for about two weeks. When I contacted tascam to fix it they wanted to charge me half the cost of the product again to repair it. I had already shipped to them so I told them to keep it.

I use this to record in Adobe Audition and make beats in FL Studio. Although I'm using it on Windows XP, it has been working flawlessly and I definitely do not regret this purchase. I will use this equipment until its time to bite the dust has arrived, and thankfully, I do not see that being anytime soon. Very happy customer here, Tascam has a greta product here.

I use this to record the weekly jam at a local bar. The sound quality is good, although for home recording I recommend a nice tube preamp. I haven't run into any issues with what I run (8 mics all together). I highly recommend it if you don't have a firewire input on your laptop (like me :D).

We've recorded a band practice using 5 inputs for drums, one direct from bass amp, one direct from guitar amp, one direct from PA for vocals. It sounds pretty killer. I haven't done much editing yet with cubase LE, but basic recording and playback is working quite well so far. No big blatant audio issues that some other folks have mentioned. I'm running Windows 7 with a PC build that was decent a few years ago (Intel i5, 4 gigs RAM) I'm hoping to record some demo quality tracks with this and so far it seems like it has the potential to do just that.

For it's price you get a lot of decent quality inputs. I was only looking for 8 inputs and this gave me 16 plus MIDI.
I think it's pretty solid and don't agree with those who claim otherwise. It's steel, 90% of these units are plastic so this is possibly the most road worthy of all. The knobs are low end but for the price I wouldn't expect much better from any brand.
It's layout is straight forward and I never even had to crack the manual other than the driver install. All the rest was pretty obvious to anyone with recording gear experience.
Mine is on 24/7 and has a billion hours on it by now. Nothing has gone wrong.
                    I use every feature.
Have recorded live bands using every input including the SPDIF ( Yamaha 01V) and the MIDI.
The headphones are sometimes wimpy so I use the monitor outs back to my mixer where I handle monitoring. But the blend knob is handy if recording alone in a basic set up.
The drivers need a little work. The original ones I used with XP 32 bit where terrible. W7 64 bit was a big improvement but there is still pour performance with Round trip Latency. I get about 9 ms. ( XP32 was 22ms)!
This is not a issue if you are recording straight up, but don't buy this unit if you wish to monitor the back end and use real time efx.

Someone said it was lightweight...I don't think so compared to others. It's 7 pounds and around 11 inches deep, whereas the behringer FCA1616 is 4 pounds and about 6.5 inches. The headphone amp is ok for DAW return, but listening to inputs directly it can be low. But the main reason I'm trying the FCA1616 instead is because it has inserts. (also nice that it's smaller). You can't really see where the gain knobs are pointing on the Tascam, but you can feel them.

Googled it, and a lot of people have had this problem, uninstalled the driver, went to the Tascam website and downloaded the driver for Mountain Lion, and BOOM works like a charm.

Comments about TASCAM US-1800 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Interface:

This interface and software bundle initially was very attractive for the price. It worked for a couple of days then completely shut down. We tried everything we could to make it work again (reinstaling drivers, downloading new drivers from tascam, disableing driver verification in windows 8, and even replacing the computer tower) Device was still not recognized and driver program would load half way then would quit and time out giving an error message. We called customer service and they still have not responded, Tascam support was no better. I do not recomend this product to anybody.

A nice preamp for just getting started. I'm new to recording but this was very easy to use and get set up. I would recommend this to any beginner looking to get a little home studio started, while still getting a great sound.
