TASCAM

A versatile 16-in/4-out, 24-bit/96kHz interface bundled with Cubase LE5.

The US-1800 audio interface from Tascam offers a high amount of inputs for a minimum amount of cash. The US-1800 features up to 16 inputs and four outputs that are transmitted to your Mac or Windows computer over a high-speed USB 2.0 connection. There are a total of eight XLR microphone inputs with phantom power and 60 decibels of clean gain, as well as six balanced line inputs, stereo digital I/O and MIDI in/out. Also Included with the US-1800 is Cubase LE5 workstation software from Steinberg. This 48-track audio workstation includes must-have features like automation, plug-ins, mixing, editing and MIDI tracks.

US-1800 rackmountable 16x4 channel interface
TASCAM's US-1800 packs 8 mic, 6 line and two digital inputs into a single rack unit, more inputs than most interfaces in its price class. The 16-in / 4-out interface works with nearly any recording software from budget to pro, including Logic Pro, Live, Nuendo, Digital Performer, Fruity Loops, and Pro Tools. It’s compact enough to carry to live gigs, or mount it in a rack in your studio.

In addition to the digital input and output, a MIDI input and output is included for interfacing with synths and drum machines.

Full-featured inputs
Eight microphone inputs are provided right on the front panel for easy access. Phantom power is available for condenser microphones, and plenty of gain is available for recording virtually any source. Also on the front panel is a pair of 1/4" inputs. Each of these can be switched to instrument level for direct recording of your guitar or bass.

A direct monitor path is available during recording to prevent the delays that can occur when recording to computer. This allows the musician to hear the input directly to the output without any delay so that timing isn't distracted by echos.
A total of six balanced line inputs can be attached using the front and rear panel jacks. A set of balanced line outputs are provided to connect to monitors, and a S/PDIF digital input and output is provided for use with high-end synths and processing gear. A stereo 1/4" headphone jack is also provided for monitoring.

Cubase LE5 Included
Included with the US-1800 is a copy of Cubase LE5, a 48-track workstation application with the features to create polished productions. VST plug-in support, automated mixing and MIDI tracks allow you to craft large productions without adding any other software.

If you want to use your own software, the US-1800 supports most Mac and Windows software such as Logic Pro, Live, Nuendo, Digital Performer, Fruity Loops, and Pro Tools.

Picked up the US-1800 to record my band's demo on (as well as get my home studio up and running). So far I've had the thing for one day and my mind is blown.16 inputs, 8 xlr with pre's, 2 digital ins, 2 guitar/bass ins. WHAT???!! Simply put there is NO other interface out there that can get you that many inputs for this price. You'll spend $500 at least for mediocre equipment (like presonus stuff)...not only is this thing cheap (which makes it perfect for our low budget demo), but it performs really well.So far I've had this thing running just about every type of mic and instrument we could throw at it today and it really impressed me. I figured for the price the thing would be really noisy...no noise at all and not a single problem with latency despite the USB connection. Had it all hooked up in less than 5 minutes with my MacBook Pro and was recording in Logic a few minutes after that. Now that the good part is out of the way...time to address the bad things (which are rather minimal):1. The phantom power switch was not designed very well. It gives you the option to run +48v to either inputs 1-4 or 5-8. Biiiiigggg issue if you're recording drums that require more than 4 dynamic mics. You would have to run any other dynamics through an external pre-amp into one of the line inputs. Luckily, I play a 4 piece kit so I was unaffected, but I can see this being a serious issue for someone, phantom power should be selectable per input, it'll blow out dynamics real quick.2. Headphone output could be better. Then again that's a quick fix with a quality headphone amp through one of the outputs in the back, a lot of interfaces skimp on the headphone out quality.Overall this interface is absolutely killer for the price. There's literally no other way to properly record drums for under this price. You will not be disappointed. Build quality is even good, all metal casing, gain/volume knobs have a solid, expensive feel to them, all the inputs are solid connections as well. For those of you having issues: maybe you should be looking at your COMPUTER AND DAW instead of the interface. I'm running a MBP with 4gb of RAM. No issues here....your interface can only run as good as your computer can.

Worst interface I have ever purchased. Not worth the trouble.

I've bought this on March 20th. Five months in. Interface light stays on. Looking online I found that it was a known issue. Called Tascam directly for the warranty department. The guy sounded annoyed as soon as he answered the phone. I could hear a tv in the background and felt like he didn't care to help.

Rep: " it is a known issue, you will have to send it in, it will be hundred for the labour"
Me: "It is a known issue and you will still charge me to get it fix?"
Rep: "Yeah but it won't happen again"
Me: "and if it happens again?"
Rep "it won't"(sounded annoyed)
Me: "but if it happens again, will I have to pay a hundred for labor."
Rep: "It won't happen again." (sounded even more annoyed)
Me: "that is not what I'm asking"
Rep "It won't happen again but if it does you will still have to pay hundred dlrs for labor"
....

I baby the hell out of all the music equipment. I'm a broke college student. So it is not fun to deal with this......

I've never done a review. This is the first time I've felt like I had to. I been recording music on the computer for the last 8 years at home.
I've started with little 1 input interfaces by m-audio (which still works.) then moved to a better one (still works.) Just a background on it.

Comments about TASCAM US-1800 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Interface:

Don't buy! I ordered this product to use for quick recording at home. I have a recording studio, but wanted to buy something for quick demos at home, so I bought the US-1800. Worst decision of my life. Within a couple months, the USB jack stopped working and Tascam claims it is not covered under the warranty. They told me to take it to a local authorized repair shop, where it sat for 2 months before telling me that it is no longer under the 90 day labor warranty. You would be much better off spending a little more to get a focusrite interface. This is not worth the money!

Comments about TASCAM US-1800 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Interface:

Ok, so I got worried after ordering and saw some poor reviews about durability and functionality issues with pro tools. Unit is still new to me so I cant speak to durability. It took some work to get it up and running with Pro Tools 11. The tascam has it's own interface where you modify buffer size etc, and I wasn't used to that idea, normally I'd change it in PT setup menu. Some said it only works on highest latency settings. In PT 11 I got it working on both high and low latency settings so recording without a delay works, and higher latency for mixdown works as well. So far so good. All inputs tested and working fine. Preamps aren't the best but are pretty clean. Definitely not bad at all. I'm happy. We'll see about the durability.

    Dependable, Cheap with minor setbacks...

    By CBC Worship

Comments about TASCAM US-1800 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Interface:

I have used this for over a year now to multitrack record our worship services and it has yet to let me down.

I leave the power on all the time and have only had to reset it twice.

We record 14 tracks live into a Mac Mini with Logic Pro. Once I got it set up and tweaked it has worked like a charm.

    Minor issues:
No line/mic level selection for front inputs. I had to split xlr signal. Also you don't get much control over the 1/4 inputs on the back. Inputs 1-10 has individual knobs, but 11-14 only have selector switches.

Overall, for the price you can't beat what you get.

I have this unit attached to my laptop, so I'm only using it in a very limited way. It has enough inputs for the purpose I'm using it for, but its lack of ADAT ports doesn't allow you to connect any other device to add more inputs for tracking a larger group of musicians. But it's well made and works with all the different DAWs I use.

Works great. Small learning curve on the the Tascam Control Panel. After that it is almost plug-n-play. This is a huge bang for your buck component! I have ran this on a 10 year old windows based lap top and a brand new mac-mini. The 1800 works well with both.

Not great preamps but they work and are relatively quiet.

For an indie band, a home studio or a full time hobby, this unit will serve you for s0me time.

There is nothing bad about this unit if you know what you are doing. Troubleshooting information is easy to find online. It comes with Cubase 5 LE, which is a decent software for starters. There are lots of tutorials online for cubase. Highly recommended.

If you are using Cubase 5 LE, take your time in studying it first. I took a 2 hour class on it before jumping right in and it helped me navigate (although I still am overwhelmed by it at times).

If you experience noise problems (static, etc.) like I did, do not blame the unit. Most caused by latency on your PC. Can be fixed with some honest research on the problem. There are a number of issues that can be trouble shooted online. There is a lot of information available for this unit if you would only look for it

Comments about TASCAM US-1800 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Interface:

I received the US-1800 back from Tascam/Teac Service today. They got it from me on May 27th. Computer recognized it immediately. Using Audacity set to record 14 tracks, works perfectly. What more to say? I didn't check "unreliable" this time because I hope it is NOW a reliable unit based on the info from Tascam that the replacement parts are updated and will not fail. Teac/Tascam Service has been polite and helpful. I would be less pleased if I had paid full price PLUS the postage & labor costs, but as it is I have not yet paid the retail list price.
I will say that the "down time" is totally un-professional and therefore would not recommend the unit for professional use. It would be reasonable for Tascam to cover all costs associated with the repair of factory defective/inadequate components.
Now, back to making music and high quality US-1800 multi-track recordings of it. btw, WinXPpro sp2;Dell 3000; 2.8 pentium; 2GB ram; 80GBpata; sataPCIcard&1TB7200sata64Mcache; USB 2.0

So, to continue, After my last review I did not get an email with a tracking # for a full week so I called. They (Tascam Service) said they were just going to call me. They don't have the parts YET. Should have them by Friday the 13th (!?!). They are very sorry. I told them to bill my account so that would not cause any further delay once repaired.
I want to say they (she) have been very nice on the phone, attempting to answer questions and provide info I asked for such as noted in my first review.
Today is Friday the 13th and I got an email from Tascam Service which states in part:
                Shipped On: 6/13/2014 12:00:00 PM
                Est. Delivery: 6/19/2014
                Carrier: FedEx Home Delivery®
                To be continued . . .
