The VL-A5 is a 5" two-way reference monitor that's self-powered and employs balanced TRS/XLR combination inputs. I haven't bothered getting the subby. I have custom made JBL front of house speakers worth many thousands of dollars from the early 70's for double-checking the bass. I haven't had a surprise yet. These little guys will look after you.
A bi-amped monitor with simple adjustments for woofer and tweeter. Response adjustments can be made at 800 or 1500 Hz for LF and 3 or 8 kHz for HF. Response may be raised or lowered by 1.5 dB. When one considers that 6dB is the difference between a whisper and a shout, this is quite adequate, but I would prefer a sweepable knob to adjust levels, rather than the less flexible switches on these units. This is the reason I rated these 9 rather than 10 for features.
Volume is controlled by a screw headed knob at the rear, a rather inconvenient arrangement but in line with most studio monitors. Remembering that the input level is controlled by the volume knob and the amps run flat out all the time my advice to buyers is to turn the volume up full and control your volume from the input source.
The boxes for these units are very well constructed. They are reassuringly heavy. There is no buzz or vibration at all from the cabinets. Frequency response is smooth through the audio spectrum. Placed properly, at least a meter (40") out from a wall and more than that away from any side wall, 6 ft apart and 6ft from the listener with the listener's ears at the level of the tweeter, the sound stage is excellently presented. Bass is full and uncolored which may explain the comments of reviewers who have criticized the bass. It is true bass, not emphasized bass. Mids and highs are clean and clear and there is no harshness. Anyone criticizing these speakers for harshness had better seriously consider the quality of their recordings and the layout of their listening room. The monitors allow critical listening to all tracks. This is the mission statement of all monitors. I have not heard a cleaner sound with such presence in a speaker of this size before.
When you get a speaker this good at a price like this you feel like a white collar criminal.

These were my first set for my budding studio. Now that I have grown considerably(PreSonus 16.4.2++++),these just dont cut the mustard. In-fact, they are bad. No bass at all. none. Highs are harsh. I wouldn't recommend. Cheap Sony pc speakers atWalmart are better.
