Comments about TC Helicon VoiceLive Rack:
I have been a longtime owner and user of Helicon products, voiceworks/voice one/quintet/voice live 1/voice live touch even the PoweCore software plugins.I also have used Digitech harmonizers and truth be told, the Helicon stuff is more convincing.
The Voice Live rack is my latest acquistion for live work in my band, emulating back up singers of the Male, Female, and Mixed persuasion.
The Good: easy to program without an editor(none exists).Plenty of factory patches to start from.Flexible input and output oprions and settings for various gain staging isues.Lots of Effects options to add sheen or be downright outragious .You have to acquaint yourself with TCs terminology for smoothing gender and the like to understand what you are modifying.
The Bad:I was spoiled by my voice Live floor unit, It has seemless transparent pitch correction on the input vocals. No matter where I sang it corrected the harmony to my Midi control notes. Not So on the Rack.No matter what I set for smoothing or pitch correction, if my input vocal is off, the harmonies are off, or they lock to something other than the control notes.I dont have near perfect pitch so I output clams. Also the floor unit had a midi note hold function so the harmony control remained until you changed chords. The rack, it seems, you have to play the chord or retrigger , then sing the note.
I am pleased with the unit and am still digging in to discover its power.
It did include the MP 75 mic, but I am using an sm58, since I have the three button floor switch control pedal for relote functions.
I really wanted to give it a 4 1/2 but there are no 1/2 steps on the ratings

Very good product, and even better customer support. My MP75 wasn't working correctly right out of the box and a single email to TC-helicon is all it took for a brand new microphone to be shipped out to me.

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceLive Rack:
I would recommend this to anyone with the following provisos: Even after 45 yrs. of rocking I am NOT an engineer thus this machine, with no book except the one on the disc is hard to figure out. Naturally, you young guns out there will prove me wrong but I have read the forums where the same problems come up over and over.
Writing to tech is okay but they give you a textbook answer that does not edifiy you any better than reading the instructions. THe "You tube" site is down more than up so forgetr getting any ideas from our own family of users. All in all it seems like a great machine but I am still at the gate waiting to figure out how to get a nice simple setting that will make my "older" voice sound a bit better. Guitar through this is a snap, voice is not so easy. AND!!!many of the 239 touted voices that are preset are...IMHO....useless. WHat would be wrong with some everyday presets for simple voices.
Comments about TC Helicon VoiceLive Rack:
You are not going to find a better harmonizer in this price range or any other. TC Helicon has really outdone themselves in this all inclusive vocal package. The only other thing I could recommend for them to include is a tube driven preamp and an external Eq. Then, I wouldnt need any other outboard gear for my vocal channels.
There is not a better harmonizer on the market for this price or any above it. I own a pro studio and have used more expensive units, like those from eventide, and they are still, to this day, using archaic, outdated hardware. They havent updated in 15-20 years. Whereas, TC Helicon has pushed forward, bringing the best of todays technology to the forefront of vocal processing.
This unit is packed full of the effects you need to make radio-ready tracks. Compression, Eq and delay are just some of the nicities that this unit offers... not to mention, the best harmonies in the industry.
Built rock solid.
The price is unbelievable for what you get in this unit. The harmonies alone are worth thousands to any producer or artist out there. Everything else is just icing on the cake.
Comments about TC Helicon VoiceLive Rack:
VoiceLive Rack sounds amazing! But if your intention is to use this processor live, be aware there is no momentary foot control of harmonies and other effects which are vital to the stage performer. These features can only be controled by the TC Helicon corded MP-75 microhone (No thanks, I already have a favorite Shure wireless mic) or the TCH Switch-3 foot pedal which is latching and not momentary. This means that you have to press the button to turn harmonies on and then press it again to turn them off. Try doing this when only certain words or phrases in songs are harmonized. It's like a bad tap dance routine. Thus the brilliant harmonies created by this unit are useless to me during a live performance. Momentary foot control has long been a standard feature in previous TCH vocal processors like the Voiceworks and Voiceworks Plus (which I own multiple units). How this feature was overlooked by TCH in their new flagship model is beyond me. It seems TCH failed to put the "Live" in Voicerack Live. I am considering returning this item as I am very disappointed in this oversight.
This unit is packed with many great vocal tools from the preamp section to it's many effects which all seem to be of pristine quality. However it lacks certain control features such as momentary footswitch control over harmonies and effects which are vital to the live performer.
As I mentioned before the sound quality of this processor is excellent within all its features. I cannot comment on it's functional reliability or design quality as I have only owned this item for a week or so and it not been road tested.
I am giving this processor a low rating in this area because even though it offers quite alot of excellent features, the lack of momentary footswitch control in a live setting makes many features useless to the stage performer.
