OVERVIEW

2-voice intelligent harmonies generated by your playing!

The TC¢Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G is a studio-quality vocal harmony effects pedal designed for guitar players. The Harmony-G pedal takes the need for programming completely out of the equation, since your guitar playing tells Harmony-G what notes to harmonize. Adaptive mixing and harmony arrangement algorithms follow guitar and voice, and produce realistic harmonies without pre-programming. A guitar AutoMix function provides acoustic guitar players with a balanced mix of vocals, guitar, and effects.

The VoiceTone harmony-G pedal's straightforward controls enable you to go further and arrange voicing and effects changes in your songs by stepping through 10 presets with A/B settings as you perform. VoiceTone Harmony-G also features XLR mic level I/O, a guitar input, and pass-thru for separate amp and guitar tuner inputs.

Each effect pedal in the TC Helicon VoiceTone line has a unique purpose, yet they complement each other perfectly. Their studio-quality sound, ready-for-action construction, and unobtrusive size let you carry TC Helicon VoiceTone pedals with your favorite mic to the gig, whether it's a club or a concert hall. And operation couldn't be easier. You'll get the sound you want in seconds, instantly boosting your performance the very first night you use a TC Helicon VoiceTone pedal. Up til now, only the most successful singers could take their producer, live engineer, back-up singers and vocal coach on the road. Now it's your turn to bring your vocal posse with you and ensure that your message, and your sound are heard.

Quality is discernible in every aspect of TC Helicon VoiceTone pedal design. Studio-caliber audio algorithms, transparent converters, and fastidious analog audio design lead to a smooth sound that makes you sound your best. It just wouldn't be enough to make a product that helps you sound this good without making sure it can stand up to rough treatment onstage or in the studio. TC Helicon designers gave the VoiceTone Harmony-G vocal effect pedal sturdy construction to survive being moved and stepped under conditions found on the road.

I have both the VoiceTone Create and the Harmony-G, and use them together in my home jam room, because the Create gives me more control over the vocal effects. I turn the FX mix off on the Harmony and just use the doubler and/or harmonies. When I go to play with friends, I just take the Harmony-G and use it for both harmony and effects.
I don't use the Guitar Thru, but it works well to just feed the Harmony pedal with the second line out of my guitar multi-fx pedal, or the second channel of my keyboard.
Only one quirk I've noticed - even when playing a straight major chord, the 3rd-up harmony often, but not always, goes to to the 7th when I sing a 5th, rather than going to the octave above. It seems to vary with the key.
The only other thing is my guitar chord sometimes drags across the Input and cranks my volume up or down. I'm thinking I need a shim to make it a little harder to turn, or maybe a guard.
The TC Helicon Harmony-G is quite versatile, allowing you to decide how many presets you want to have, up to 10, so if you want fewer you won't have to cycle through the extra ones. The dual-mode footswitch lets you access all your presets without bending over, or change to A/B mode to toggle between the two parts of your preset. Editing and storing is easy, but I might have liked a wider range of effects, or some way to tweak the ones provided. The FX level sets the mix the same for all presets, so you need to find a point where the subtle effects come through without the bolder effects being too dominant, unless you prefer to adjust the level when you change presets. But the Harmony functions are great, and the effects are sufficient to make this a stand-alone pedal.
The pedal is sturdy and the controls feel smooth and firm. Footswitches work well and seem durable.
The features and quality make this an excellent value for the price.

If you play any guitar chord varriations, such as an Em7, the harmony processor won't know how to harmonize with your voice. It waffles back-n-forth between a major and minor arrangement. If you can play simple chords, this will work for you. You should be able to play a killer version of James Taylor's "Carolina in my Mind," but this unit can't figure out how to harmonize unless you dummy up the guitar chords as to defeat the purpose.

Amazing device

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

Just got this Helicon G pedal, and was up and running in no time. And it is magical what the unit can do (though some features will no doubt improve with time). But since there may be some confusion about what hardware and cords are needed to run it, let me add that information (I can understand why Pissed from CNY was suprised, as that information is not specified): You need two standard XLR microphone cords, one to attach to the unit and the other to attach either to a mixer or to a guitar amp with a mic input in addition to the guitar jack (there are lots of those out there for singer-songwriter types). Then you need a guitar cord (1/4" jacks) to attach your electro-acoustic or electric guitar to the Helicon, and actually that will do fine--both guitar and vocal will be run through your amp or mixer via the mic input. If however you want to separate guitar and voice, you may run a separate guitar cord from the Helicon to another amp or to the guitar input of the amp into which you plugged the mic, adding effects to your taste in between.Hope this helps those considering purchase.

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

This is a great box. Great sound, simple to use. Harmoniex sound the most natural that I have heard. Best piece of gear that I've bought in years (and yes, this is an honest review).
This is a great box that REALLY makes the vocals sound so much better. The harmonies actually don't sound like the chip munks either. Natural sounding for both highs and lows.

Honestly, best purchase I've made in a long time (and no I don't work for anyone paying me to do write this!)

Harmony G vs Voice Live 2

By Danny Grayshock

from Atlanta, GA

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

The Harmony G blows the VL2 away soncially. It has better effects, better hamonies, more options an overall sounds better even for the stand alone vocal. The Harmony G cuts the effects in bypass the VL2 does not. It's nice to have a dry vocal for speaking to the audience. The tuner on the Harmony G is better. I have been using the VL2 four or five nights a week for 3 years. The downside. Harmony G is a 12 volt unit, VL2 is 9. So forget the VS one spot for the Harmony G. The Harmony G is smaller which is nice but, the buttons are so close you may hit both of them accidentally. Also since it is smaller if you have your pedals attached to a board it is kind of tricky to get the guitar input in, so leave some room there if possible. When playing it is difficult to see what's going on with the pedal since the lights are so close. Again smaller size. Overall, I retired the VL2 and am much happier with the Harmony G. Because at the end of the day, it is all about how good you sound!

Crazy Awesome

By Turk

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

The harmonies are unreal. It's like having two backup singers who can read your mind. If you like harmonies you'll love this. You can control the number of harmonies, where they are, and their sound. The harmonies will change even if you don't change the note you are singing due to what you are playing on the guitar. If you use an acoustic guitar it really simplifies things by giving you the controls on the pedal and using only one cable to the PA. There is one huge problem, it's totally addictive and you'll want to over use the harmonies. Sound is clean and impressive.
Incredible sound selection and voice choices
Seems very well made

Live performance tips

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

When using this for low-volume live applications, it works admirably well; almost as well as in the product videos from TC. Remember, those demos were made in a studio! When playing live, especially at higher volumes of a typical rock band, you absolutely need a gate to control the input. That is true of ANY vocal effect because vocal mics pickup ANY sound. Obviously, the louder that sound is, the more the mic will hear.Place an adjustable noise gate BEFORE the unit. Adjust it so that it lets through vocals ONLY when you are close to the mic and singing directly into it. Once you have that setting, memorize it, write it down and put marks on your knobs in case they get whacked. That single trick will dramatically improve this type of effect's performance. And if you are using the real-time harmony generator; remember your playing has to be at a consistent volume and relatively noise free. Those with questionable technique, string-noise, buzzing frets etc will experience glitches as the machine tries to figure out what the hell your fingers are trying to do.Is this thing perfect? No. But if you understand acoustics and how it works, you will be much happier with this or any other vocal effects processor like it.Get a Gate.Plug it in.Adjust it.Play clean. Then you won't blame the box for some other problem.Peace and good luck.

Some in your audience will go Hmmm???

By BilySpit

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

We gigged with it on SuperBowl Sunday for the first time, and I could tell there were one or two people in the audience who were a little perplexed that they were hearing 4 voices, but only two guys were singing. I probably should have backed off the Harmony knob to the left a bit. I know that sometimes it seems like technology allows us to cheat as musicians (can you say autotune?) But to be fair, with a device like a harmonizer, it is garbage in garbage out. The musician still has to do their part. As a band, we are pretty impressed with the Voice Tone Harmony G and at this point would replace it if it was jacked. Before the guys show for rehearsal I crank everything up and play some Pink Floyd, or Neil Young Cinammon Girl and marvel at how sick I sound (the good sick). Just be careful with the Ouput & Harmony knobs - you've got to know how much is enough. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. BTW - dont forget to turn it off after each song when you talk to your audience or you will sound like a bad robot! Lame...
I've only had it about 3 weeks, but, I've also already gigged with it. What I like about this unit is that the Features vs. Ease of use, make it a very useable device. You will wish you had 3 foot switchable presets very quickly, but all you have to do is reach down and change it, which is a snap to do. Watch the input knob as your level can rise above your bandmates very quickly. The Harmony knob is also pretty usable - I put it center up or slightly to the left for most of the harmonies, but I crank it all the way to the right with voice 1 on Higher and no voice 2 to achieve cool Pink Floyd harmonies while relegating my natural voice way into the background.
So far so good, but I've only had it less than a month. Time will tell... My only gripe is that the foot switches do not have clicks in them - just my personal preference
Two extra sets of vocal chords for under $200 bucks. Count me in! In all seriousness, this device adds a layer of richness in one of the toughest areas to do so. If you don't abuse the effect, it will pay you back with real value add for your band.

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

Well, this is my final followup to my 2 below. I just finished up with the TC Helican online support tech, a real trooper, did all he could. However I conjecture from what I observed within my experience that no one was surprised with my experience. I made some suggestions that they should devise a recommendations, limitations, pref'd equipement, and equip. to avoid, etc.The Garble seems to come from keeping the Input Gain Pot low (to avoid the Feedback, or "ring" that persists). This was done as a suggestion by TCH, their develper in Canada, the one on the demo videos, I was told directly. But the online Support Tech, realized by treating the Feedback, we created the Garble --he was correct. So, we went back to sticking with his suggestions --and starting over again --another bad unit, or just how it "works".I advised them my experience at a Amp Show they were at, no comment on that. There's a large support record under my interaction with them, including Jpegs, et al.Bottomline, this is a marginal unit, unpredictable in outcome use, if used in various venues. Even in stable environment, in recording, it had it's limitation too. You'll get a very average, to below average result, if you have any kind of critical ear. Keep the gain low, vol low, do not use the Tone feature... well, it's a bit muddy, escially when you nock back the 6.3 frequency range on the vocals on the PA... no "airy" feeling at all. Mudd in my opinion.I pointed out to TCH, I could not find a Warranty or Guarantee online on their site, the OEM site. It's a very limited Warranty, in the box only. So, keep to the 45 day eval here at M.F. --who by the way, did all they could do, aside from taking it back AFTER 45 days --I can't fault them for that. So, I guess, it's not broken, it just does not perform as expected, as I understand it should,as it did in its first days of use (?), nor as demo'd by their folks at a large venue Amp Show 2009.I hope that helps. This technology is far from being perfected. Get Back-up singers and be done with it :)Regards.

A Real No Brainer

By Derek Trenholm

from Fort Myers, FL

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

Absolutely the best investment you can make if you're a solo performer or the singer of a band with no backup vocals. The effects alone are worth the money you will spend on this little pedal, but the ease of use and effectiveness of the Harmonies is just mind blowing. I tried the Digitech version of this and found it to be noisy and really not very accurate when it came to true harmony. This pedal will augment your performance in a way that is indescribable. You gotta try it.

Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal

By David Wynn

from NC

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

Harmony from a machine is always going to sound like harmony from a machine. Only a real person singing harmony sounds real. But this little machine is great on some songs. If you want to thicken up spots on your song with harmony this will do the trick. I love it and it's a great little toy that I use for studio and live shows.
If you are looking for some two part harmonies this is a great little unit with everything you need for simple harmony.
Well built unit.
For the money it is a great unit.

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

I've been working on my solo accoustic act and thought I should try this unit out. It is a very complicated device that is ironically simple to use. Out of the box, you can be singing along in 10 minutes, and you can spend the next 3 days tweaking and saving changes, if you wish. The effects alone are worth the price. The harmonies are so cool, not always the notes you would sing yourself, but unit nicely tracks the guitar and the harmony fits. I've been using it live with my band to fatten up the vocals, the crowd doesn't notice, but the guys un the band are impressed.

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

I own, purchased in Feb of 09 this year. It's now almost Sept 09. I started to have issues with the unit. The Harmonies are on occasion garbled, and, or break up. It's only had very light use, in my living room, never gigged, no pets, kids, none smoke, adult cared for type environment.I understand things can have issues--I am not faulting that. However, I went to TC Helicons site for support, this is the third day with followup and not even an acknowledgment of receipt of the issue, what to do, nothing. I did read through THIS sites reviews for SUPPORT. And did try changing guitars, regarding the below if acoustic, elec., and, or if used a pre-amp, etc. --This is not how support for a unit in this price range should go.So, be mindful if you actually USE it for a performance and you need to have it work to pay your rent... you may need a backup unit or two, ?, since support is not rear by. --Well, that's just my personal experience. I hope others don't have the same, or ever need support, nonetheless, this is mine. And, BTW Musicians Friend was extremely helpful as always, willing to support me with fax, mail, email of the invoice for Warranty--Kudos to MF, why I stay here. I hope that helps someone in making a decision for a unit that might make or break their show, for an audience accustomed to hearing them with the unit, and not, without it.

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

This is my second unit I've had. The first, I sold because at the time I wasn't using it. Now doing acoustics again, I remembered how I liked it. So I got it again. I've been singing close to 40 years so voice correct features on other models don't appeal to me as I learned to sing on pitch. This unit is just perfect for what I do. It allows me and my acoustic partner to sing Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young as well a multitude of Beatle and Eagles songs.
Does what it says.
So far so good.

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

After watching the online demos, I just had to buy one. Got it home and tried in on h/phones and I was blown away... fantastic. But with speakers I do encounter problems when using an acoustic guitar. The harmonies change on their own particularly when playing a D chord the harmonies revert to A or Dm even at very low volumes. Fine with electric guitar and separating the vocal & guitar makes no difference. It has baffled the "TC Helicon Help Desk" since they state that that isn't a "known" problem.

Absolutely great!

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

I confess I was worried at first that it might sound cheesy, or even look cheesy for a solo guy to suddenly have two harmony voices "out of nowhere". Forget it. This is an incredible piece of gear that sounds amazing. It is very simple to use right out of the box. As a solo act, the ability to have "vocal arrangements" adds so much. Best harmony singers I have ever worked with. And the audience reaction: "not cheesy". Scoop this up before they run out.

The voice tone harmony-G sounds great, very professional and not cheesy. We use it for our worship leader at church. Amazing sound and pitch correction. The only things I would change with this pedal is to add a button to switch between presets on the fly, a true bypass, and an on/off switch. It is a simple pedal, but very effective. It makes you sound like a professional recording. I am very happy with this pedal and would recommend it to anyone wanting to enhance their vocals.

Comments about TC Helicon VoiceTone Harmony-G Vocal Effects Pedal for Guitarists:

Great,solid,well-built product, great tone! Sounded great when I demoed it at the local shop. However don't order if you do not have a PA system or full studio set up for vocals to use this. I ordered it & can not use it,I ran it into my bass amp which I use for keys & vocals,it sounded awful, also sounded awful through my 8 track setup & I couldn't get it to work at all through my computer studio setup,I just didn't have the right equipment. So be forewarned to use this pedal right & to it's full potential you better have a full PA or other full vocal/mixer setup, not just basic guitar amps & a couple mics/cables laying around like me AND this is what I was told when I called TC so I am not making it up,the tech just said that's how this pedal works, has to(should) go through a full mixer,etc.. May be able to rig it to an acoustic amp with a mic input without a mixer, but I have no such amp. My only other idea is to hook up my old 4 track as a mixer & run it though that into my amp,but I need a power cord to try it,but anyways, wish I had a PA
