The SOLO/610 by Universal Audio is designed to deliver the classic sound of the Putnam 610 console. The all-tube SOLO/610 provides the silky vintage warmth of the original UA 610 console used by artists ranging from Sinatra to Van Halen. Its all-tube circuit was carefully created to maintain the character of its vintage predecessor with the audiophile components and solid build you'd expect from a UA product. It has mic and DI inputs; Thru output; continuous gain and level controls; a gain-structuring Shape switch; 48V phantom power; lo cut filter; phase reverse; ground lift; and versatile mic/line level output switch. The SOLO/110 is hand-assembled by Universal Audio in the USA.

I bought one of these used for five hundred bucks. I already own a Pendulum Audio SPS-1 preamp, which, though amazingly clear, can sometimes sound a little too clinical and almost brittle for lead vocals and instruments. I have to admit, I wasn't crazy about the tone of the Solo 610 at first -- it was noisy, distorted easily, and broke up when pushing the input stage too hard -- but the unit was already five years old, so I thought it might be time to change the tubes. I replaced the stock JJ's with a pair of Genalex Gold Lions -- a $90 upgrade. I was expecting a subtle improvement at best. Oh my god! The difference was incredible! Silky smooth with tight bass and punchy mids. The background hiss completely disappeared. Now, I'm in love with this preamp. Whereas my SPS-1 can be a little sibilant and lacking "meat" for lead parts, the Solo 610 makes vocals "pop" in a way that no transformer-based preamp could do. (Bear in mind the SPS-1 has two channels but also costs more than twice as much!) The controls are easy to figure out -- drive the input stage for desired color and adjust the output stage to suit. Works great as a direct box too. I would caution users not to overdo it with the Solo 610, however, since driving it too hard can add a complexity to tracks that makes them hard to mix. If you have another more neutral preamp, save the Solo 610 for lead parts. A highly recommended upgrade for any home or semi-pro studio, especially if you swap out the tubes.

I use the Solo 610 for recording acoustic instruments and backing vocals at home. The quality of the sound I've been able to capture with the Solo 610 is excellent, on par with the tracks I've recorded in the studio. The boost from this pre is so substantial that I don't have to turn it up past about 5 to get a great depth of sound, which allows me to pretty much wipe out the noise floor. This is a excellent product that allows you to optimize your studio tracking for the instruments that really need that setting (like drums), and do the single-track, quiter instruments at home. Solidly constructed box.

I love the DI feature, makes a great bass guitar recording box, and sounds real warm and sweet. For mics I love it on voice, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar. fab all around. I like the impedence switch for mellowing out an SM57 on a cranked vintage amp..tames some of that "crackle" you get at high impedence. I put an NOS 5751 in the input (you can experiment). like it so much I'm getting a second. wish it was slightly cheaper
