Comments about Vienna Instruments II Special Edition Sample Library:
I've owned it for over a year now and I've never looked back. I only wish I knew about the library before now.
This library takes a lot of computer power. Anyone looking for this quality of sound knows this. This is because the library has every instrument you'll need and then some. VSL has recorded all the basic articulations you'll commonly use and you can upgrade your library instrument by instrument or sections at a time. The VSL forum is full of friendly users with advice, tips, and help and the VSL team spends a great deal of time on the forumn as well. VSL has the best software in the market as well. Their basic player comes with the library and with any VSL purchase you get a free mixing host on their site as well. Hands down, this is the only choice for people serious about writing orchestral music and making realistic mock-ups.
The sound is out of this world! Some people don't like 'dry recordings' but that's just because they don't know how to use it. A dry french horn sounds bad on it's own. That's what reverb is for. If you record it 'wet' or 'in a hall' then your recording isn't flexible. If you record it dry, like in a tight space... then you can place the instrument in any hall and sound natural. I know it's been used in more stuff than this, but this is all I can think of off the top of my head- but VSL has been used for the mock-ups for Tangled and other films. It was actually used in the final product for the first Underworld film and parts of the Doctor Who T.V. series. That can't be said of any other sample library available.
VSL isn't cheap. I'll be the first to admit that. But on the VSL site you can hear demo's that sound as real as any orchestra. With the cost it takes to hire real performers, this can be used in several production scenarios, and it's worth every penny and then some. If your film or series has the budget for real performers, you absolutely should. But where only a couple T.V. shows use real anymore, VSL is the best option you have.
Comments about Vienna Instruments II Special Edition Sample Library:
As noted in previous posts, when you install the library you install hundreds of GB which you won't be able to use since the standard version license includes only only a part of it.To get some decent performance you need to buy at least:- the SE standard- the SE extended- the SE PLUS- the SE PLUS extendedif you don't do so there is always some major articulation missing for some important instrument. Finally, they use an annoying copy protection system which slows down the performance of the software, makes one of the USB ports busy which on laptops (for which the SE is thought) is very annoying since you need to have the key with you all the time. Furthermore, although they will never inform you, if you loose the key you loose the license and the chance to use the software you purchased!
Comments about Vienna Instruments II Special Edition Sample Library:
The Special Edition I+II sets come with 53 gigs of instruments, of which it only comes with licenses for a fraction. You can't use or uninstall the "trial" instruments, so they sit on your hard drive taking up more than 20 gigs of space. Very frustrating. I sent them an email, and there is no way to fix the problem. The instruments that do work, work well and are not hard to use.
