Comments about WESTONE UM Pro 10 In-Ear Monitors:
These monitors have a great, clean sound. They are not bass heavy, but rather have a nice even response through the mid and high-frequency spectrum.
They also have a very high sensitivity, meaning it doesn't take much voltage to get a comfortable SPL. This also means that if your computer sound card has ANY noise, you are going to be sorry. Fortunately I have a Macbook Pro, and Apple puts some engineering hours on ensuring electrical noise is isolated from the DAC hardware. I haven't investigated much into headphone amps, but you might want to consider one, or an outboard DAC if you have noisy on-board sound hardware.
The other day at church, while setting up before the service, our sound tech asked if I was going to be using the in ear monitors that day -- he couldn't even see I was wearing these. I have the clear ones, and that coupled with the over-ear cord wrap makes them just about invisible to anyone looking directly at you.
The over ear wrap also means you will NEVER worry about them falling out on you, even if you were doing some jogging or such. Also, cord noise is a thing of the past as your outer ear will damp out the vibrations.
Also, they are COMFORTABLE. I ended up using the smallest silicone buds, and I wear them for hours at a time listening to music while working; I never feel fatigue in my ear cartilage.
Isolation is pretty good with the silicones -- I would guess around 12-15dB. But when using the foam inserts, wow is it good. At least 25dB. Not quite solid foam plug 30+ dB, but I would guess using them when flying would be absolute bliss for listening.
I ended up using the silicones for stage use because it is so much faster to pop them in and out, not having to roll them down and fit them in.
Also, I can't forget to mention the fantastic 'monitor vault' they come with. I didn't even know about this before opening the package. It is an extremely sturdy plastic case with a (wee) bit of foam padding inside to store and transport the monitors. There is even a rubber gasket between the top and bottom half hinting to at least a fair amount of water-proof ness. I'm sure the case would float, but would likely leak if it got pulled to the bottom of a lake in your backpack. But why would you bring headphones canoeing anyways? :)
Another plus for the 'vault'? I will never again lose my 1/8 to 1/4 adapter!
