very good product at a reasonable price

Comments about IMP 2 Standard Direct Box:

I did an A/B comparison and find this product to be very good regarding sound quality.

We tested three instruments with the following setup: the instrument was plugged into a Morley A/B box, with one output going into a high-Z input of a Mackie powered mixer (Mackie PPM608), and the other output going into the Whirlwind IMP 2 Standard Direct Box, which fed one of the XLR inputs of the Mackie powered mixer. This way we could quickly switch between ¼" directly into high-Z, and the DI box, and play the same measures of music over and over to get a good comparison.

The Mackie feeds Electro Voice SX100 speakers in a small venue that seats about 80 people.

The instruments were 1) a Kala UBass, which is a version that has a passive pickup under the saddle (no battery, no EQ) 2) a mountain dulcimer with a passive saddle pickup, and 3) a Cordoba tenor ukulele with a K&K Aloha Twin pickup.

We had four listeners, and the room was otherwise empty.

The listeners could tell no difference in the sound quality or the volume of the UBass and the mountain dulcimer. The sound was louder for the tenor uke through the DI box. After we adjusted the volume to match, the listeners could tell no difference in the sound quality on the tenor uke, either.

I therefore recommend this product. It appears to be rugged, and the sound quality was very good on the three instruments tested.

It solves our problem at a reasonable price. We only have two high-Z inputs into our mixer, but six XLR inputs. This DI box enables us to plug instruments into the XLR inputs.

So far, so good. Nice small footprint and haven't had any issues with it. Use it every week to gig at church, usually velcro'd on my pedalboard.

There is not a better passive DI out there. Unless you want to pay more for the same sound.

Comments about Whirlwind IMP 2 Standard Direct Box:

This unit is an industry standard because of its simple, uncluttered, reliable profile. It does exactly what it purports to do, and does it without any unnecessary noodling. If plug'n'play appeals to you, then this unit will not disappoint. Period. Every gig bag should have one of these for regular use, or "just in case…"

Comments about Whirlwind IMP 2 Standard Direct Box:

It doesn't do much, but what it does, it does well. If you want to plug a hi-Z output (e.g., guitar pick-up) into a low-Z input (e.g., a mixer's mic input), this is what you want. It also has a ground-lift switch (which all these direct boxes seem to have), but that's it for its features. No bells and whistles: it's passive (no battery), no preamp, no tuner, no sound-shaping. But then, it doesn't cost much, and it's very well built in a sturdy metal case. And it's small enough to fit inside my guitar case along with my picks, capos, and 1/4" cable.

Comments about Whirlwind IMP 2 Standard Direct Box:

I bought this for the price. I was looking for something to record guitar and bass with. I didn't need any of the other features that other di boxes come with (for ex. having 2 channels - which is nice if you need it, obviously).
The imp-2 is a great little di box that is going to serve it's purpose.
