Comments about Yamaha MG166CX-USB 16-Channel USB Mixer With Compression and Effects:
I gave this mixer four stars. I really like it. It has good sound and seems adequate for my needs, which is a small country/rock group playing the clubs. Here's what I didn't like. The faders feel cheap. I would have liked a little more solid feel. Each channel has an on off button with a nice positive click. The effects does not. Before I plugged it in, I thought it may have been broken. It would have been nice to have consistent tactile controls standard.
A word on size. I like that the unit comes with integrated rack ears. I don't like that you effectively need 14u to mount it due to the odd power cord. I was able to find a 12u roadstar case that would fit it by taking out the front bracing, but even then it required some modification to get everything to fit properly.
All in all, it's a good board for the money. It's not the most rugged piece of equipment ever, but for the price it'll do. I'd buy it again.
Comments about Yamaha MG166CX-USB 16-Channel USB Mixer With Compression and Effects:
It's great. I only wish that both AUX were switchable to Pre/post. But the sound was better then I expected and it looks very cool in the rack. I know Mixers and have owned from Mackie, Older yamaha, Peavy, soundcraft and more. This is cheap- but if you don't mind a plastic build and you want clean reliable insides, this is a good choice
The Yamaha Mg166cx has everything you can possibly expect at this size and price. The compressors work as well as any external comp for vocals ETC. with fast attack. The comp's don't really work with drums... The Noise floor is very low. Preamps can get a little noisy at high gain, but they seem to pack a lof of power and feel smooth. They sound crip...no muffled sounds here. The reason I really love this board is the layout. It all so straight forward yet packed together in a professional way, it's inspiring use. I hate Mackie CFX....
Exterior build quality is weak. Leave it in a rack or hardcase at all times, and its fine. As far as Inside build goes, I haven't heard of anyone with a problem yet. The sound quality is why I bought it and it sounds really clean and crisp. Some of the built in reverbs are good enough for professional live sound.
Good value- I suspect these will be hanging around for years to come
Comments about Yamaha MG166CX-USB 16-Channel USB Mixer With Compression and Effects:
We got this board about 8 months ago and we are still loving it today. If your planning on running your own sound as a band this is a great place to start. From the most simple of applications to the fairly complex set-ups, this board will hang in there. Beginers will soon realize the full potential of the MG166CX. This unit handles all applications from running our 3 power amps, wireless mics, noise gates, BBE Bass EFX, and cd players. Once mastered this board should provide any band playing in an average size club plenty of options. Highly recommended!
Comments about Yamaha MG166CX-USB 16-Channel USB Mixer With Compression and Effects:
I have been around sound and running sound for about 10 years. I was just recently tasked with building a system for a new church on a budget and although we had to cut a few corners I decided that the board was not going to be one of those. I've read many reviews of this board and it performs better than the positive reviews state. It's got your standard features you expect from a truely "usable" board, but has a few more. Here are a few things I found especially positive for a growing church. One although it only has 2 aux outs, if you choose not to use the effects (which for live applications only the amateur or cheesy will continue to use)the effects out can easily be used as a third aux out. Two, sweepable mids on the mono channels make this board truely usable. Three, the COMPRESSOR is AWESOME! THe church is a pentacostal church so there are is a large amount of normal speaking then forcefull bellowing not to mention people that have grown up on having the mic nearly inside there larynx. At about 10 oclock the compress will mash a little yet leave dynamic room something that can be somewhat of a hard task to accomplish with more complex controls. The only negative I have to this board is the lack of a 2 track in to the monitors so you will have to use one of the stereo channels (which I would have done anyways)
Comments about Yamaha MG166CX-USB 16-Channel USB Mixer With Compression and Effects:
we originally had a used behringer, but quickly found it lacking in quality even for the price. we replaced it with this yamaha mixer and it was the best thing we could have done. my drums sound incredible and our guitars sound even better. for the price, we could not have asked for a better board.
Comments about Yamaha MG166CX-USB 16-Channel USB Mixer With Compression and Effects:
Having owned several MG series mixers both larger and smaller than this one, I had no hesitation at all to lay my money down. These are reliable, good sounding mixers that give you as many or more features and routing/mixing options than about any similar mixer out there. They are a breeze to set up and can handle a wide variety of sources and situations with ease. Best of all, they just sound good. Yamaha's mic pre's are of good quality, the EQ is very useable in a musical sense and the FX are surprisingly good. The really surprising feature of some of these newest MG mixers are the inclusion of channel compressors. They actually work and are all but idiot-proof, not to mention that I would think other manufacturers will be following suit soon. It's just too good of a tool to have on a mixer. Our system consist of this and two QSC powered cabs and sounds excellent. I have a new dbx Driverack PX on the way and expect it to sound even better still. Together, they make an easy to setup, compact, powerful great-sounding and relatively affordable system that will cover most small to medium venues and even outdoor gigs. It seems to me that's pretty much exactly what the average band is looking for.
Comments about Yamaha MG166CX-USB 16-Channel USB Mixer With Compression and Effects:
Over all , this is a great board. I bought it with the idea of using it to record to computer (USB) AND if I needed a live board. The board is loaded with features and well laid out. I love the board ! CUBASE AI4 was included and did not install correctly on my system. After fighting with it, it would not generate the required "soft code" for registration. After contacting support, they emailed me a link for a new code generator. The link was bad and I had to find the file myself. Once found, everything installed correctly and I was up and running. Then I realized that you can only record a maximum of 2 channels at a time into CUBASE because the USB IS STEREO ONLY, no way to assign multiple tracks because the USB has only 2 outputs, left and right. So without a new multi-channel sound card (plug all your board's in/outs into it), you really have a great multi-channel mixer board that you can only record 1 channel at a time (2 if you pan each hard right and hard left) and it becomes useless as a mixer. (again, the multi tracks recorded into CUBASE can not be assigned to multi-channels on the mixer. BUMMER. Now I have to buy a multi-channel sound card, more cables and run everything to the mixer in order to effectively use it. JUST BEWARE and know what you're buying. So unless I'm missing something, you got your work cut out for you to make all this a true multi-channel recorder/mixer. By pass the USB and go to a card like M-AUDIO Delta 1010.
