This mixer really is a nice item. Very good for running any small live gigs (through some amps, though). But if you run windows vista, you're going to have a lot of trouble with home recording.
This is a really good mixer for your first pocket studio. I think there is a Firewire 12 input Yamaha mixer with compression on it but for first time users, its a good value. Only thing is if you need to recording drums, and need the 6 XLR inputs on different audio tracks, save your money get a Firewire card, because on USB you can't record all 6 XLR inputs on different audio tracks if your using software based recording software. Either get Fire Studio(a firepod) or just save and get the better mixer. But for a first time user its good for practice, and great for live shows.
I bought this mixer a couple months ago and I am still impressed with it. THe fact that it is USB is great because I can just plug it right into my computer and get great sounding tracks without any hiss. The preamps are better than expected and for the money you can't get a better mixer. I don't use the Cubase that came with the program but it is a perfectly good recording program and gets pretty good recordings. The only thing that I wish this mixer had was the capability to individually track each channel on the mixer but I can easily get over that because this mixer is great.
The USB drivers for mac are unusable. I haven't tested the interface on Windows, but under Mac OS X 10.5.1 an 10.5.2, this device is unusable. The audio in becomes super distorted after a couple minutes of use, rendering the recording useless. The whole unit has to be reset to recover usefulness.Even as a stand-alone mixer this is not a good unit. The amps are super noisy (even more so than my old Behringer!), making listening fatiguing.I can not recommend this unit to anyone. This price for an integrated interface/12-channel mixer IS too good to be true!
The mixer and the cubease software. It took awhile to figure things out, but once I did it works like a charm. I found that using an external sound card ($30) with RCA ins/outs was easier to use than USB. Don't have to constantly push the button for playback/recording. I would say that the mixer and cubease software was a great deal. I was thinking about getting a digital 8-track but I wanted to use my laptop for more versatility. I can now record up to 48 tracks! Software lets you see the waveforms graphically and edit them with ease. (or delete bad sections or pops)
On the plus side, this mixer has 12 inputs. On the downside, it routes all 12 inputs to one stereo output giving you only 2 outputs that the computer will receive (left channel, right channel) through the usb input. Sound quality was good but this mixer doesn't work for recording multiple inputs simultaneously (ie: drums).
The Yamaha MW12 is great! Im 17 years old and it is so easy to use. The built-in usb interface is great with its plug and play action. You are able to record and have what you have already recording playing through it which is awesome because you can have your monitors connected, a master recorder, and a third output. When you have it connected to your computer, it does disable your sound card. I didnt't use Cubase LE which came with the mixer. It was to confusing and I kept having problems with it. I use this mixer to record with Sony Vegas 7. The quality is great. Very low noise. I use two MXL condenser microphones and I couldn't be happier. The pictures make the mixing board look small but once it arrived, it was alot bigger than I thought. Not something you want to carry around with you unless you have case or something. Overall I am extremely happy with my purchase. If I some how broke this or it got stolen, I would buy 2 more.
This mixer was originally disappointing, but it turns out that I just needed to get to know it first. Now, a year after I purchased it, the mixer is still in and great condition, and, best of all, I understand how it works and the quality is great!
The Yamaha console is nice for small/quick applications. Cubase, however, is probably one of the worst DAW's I have ever used. The latency problems are horrific. Basically, Cubase is a very simple (yet very akward) DAW. Its manufacturer has disguised its poor quality with a very comlicated GUI. On the other hand, Yamaha always makes fine products.
