8-track recorder, 24-track playback, audio interface, controller, sampler, and drum machine in one.

Zoom takes its revolutionary R16 and turbocharges it with a sampler and drum machine, 8 additional recording tracks and 6 channels of phantom-power on the all-new R24. The R24 combines 4 production tools into one incredibly versatile device. In addition to 24-track playback and 8-track simultaneous recording using SD memory cards, the R24 is a digital multitrack recorder, an audio interface, a control surface and a pad sampler.

The R24's new sampler function consists of 24 built-in voices that can be triggered using 8 pads and 3 bank keys to assign sounds to each track and create loops. Also, you can use the unit's drum machine and its 400 rhythm patterns to create original backing beats, or simply output a metronome for tempo control. More than ever before, you have all the tools necessary to create studio-quality recordings anywhere.

For recording, the R24 comes with a 2GB SD card. It supports up to 32GB SDHC cards for a maximum of 100 track hours. The flexibility of SD recording not only makes the R24 lighter and more portable, it also ensures increased reliability with no concern for a crashing hard drive. Back up your project on a USB memory stick. Or dedicate an SD card to each recording session.

Take your R24 into your studio and record additional tracks using its USB audio interface. Then when you're ready to mix, use the R24's control surface capabilities to manage each function of your favorite DAW software.

Incorporate any of the 100+ built-in studio effects to enhance your recording and use the pro-quality mastering effects to complete that studio sound. You can even connect 2 R24s via USB for synchronized operation and 16 tracks of simultaneous recording.

With the new Zoom R24, versatility, control and comprehensive features come together in a single device that puts everything you need for professional music production right at your fingertips.

I've been singing and playing in bands since the late 80s, and although I never made my living solely as a musician, I've been lucky enough to lay down tracks in half a dozen different pro recording studios on repeated occasions (including 4 studios in Nashville... 2 on Music Row).

Fast forward some years and one day I decide to start putting together my first home studio. After relentless research into gear, enter the Zoom R24.

This unassuming and affordable device has met my highest expectations. I echo the other reviewer's sentiment of "I can't see why I'd pay to use a pro studio again."
Having never used a multitrack before I did peruse the well illustrated manual at length, and I recommend doing so. I keep the pdf manual on my macbook for quick text searches when occasionally needed. But I found the R24 interface and controls easy to learn and master from the get go.

In the last 5 months I've created multiple projects making use of full drumset, vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, and bass. The results have kept me smiling from the beginning. In particular, I love the ease of recording on a physical multitrack, paired with the scalability of subsequent computer DAW (Cubase LE) editing and mixing. This hybrid method has been very rewarding. Recording to SD card media is also very fast and convenient when it comes time to transfer or share your tracks.

I really don't think a home studio enthusiast starting out could go wrong with this bundle of device and DAW.

The R24 is a huge step above having nothing, especially if you're on a PC with a limited budget (or don't have a PC at all). However," the sheer number of features crammed into this product means cost cuts somewhere else (quality) and detract from any thought of ""ease of use."" For those users who already have software/plugins/loops", you alreay have better sounding tools available to you; garageband alone blows it out of the water for guitar/bass tones.

I'm looking for a better sound. But I won't be able to find it for this price with this many features.
There isn't anything else on the market that does as much as Zoom's Rxx family of products. You can read about all the features at the Zoom website, so I won't go into detail, but there's a ton to play with here. The instruction manual is a small novel, so it will take time to discover all that this product can offer you.
What's the point in doing a lot if you don't do it very well? I wanted to multi-track record without having to lug a computer around. It does just that, except the preamps offer more hiss than gain for your quieter mics (I shudder to think what would happen with a gain-hungry ribbon mic) and there's even more hiss in the headphones. Not okay. Upon computer playback, the pre-amp noise was still there, but the headphone hiss was not. That plus the plastic construction," and fragile-feeling faders don't make me think of ""quality.""
There isn't a single product that can do everything this can", let alone at this price point. If you want maximum flexibility for your money, this will serve you well (just don't drop it or smack the percussion pads too hard). Plus the included DAW makes this a complete package for the DIY band.

Comments about Zoom R24 Multitrack Recorder/Interface/Controller/Sampler:

Tired of the whole hassle of computer recording? Zoom R-24 could be for you. Was/is for me. Best 24 -track sound capture/reproduction device for the money. Use it with outboard mics, pre-amps, and compression (e.g., ART products) for best results. Would also get a headphone amp for stronger monitoring ability while recording. Cool mastering algorithms, to boot. Get one. Have fun.

Comments about Zoom R24 Multitrack Recorder/Interface/Controller/Sampler:

This device is a fairly good stand alone recorder. It looks goood and some parts of it worked very well when I first bought it. I like the built-in mics and also used the channel inputs with success for multi track recording. I added a larger SD card which helped. As a DAW control surface it did not work at all. Ever. I used about 4 or 5 various recording programs, and found that with NONE of them would the transport controls or other controls access the computer. Tried it with two different computers including a brand new one. So that part was a huge disappointment for me.

The R16 I had was very similar to the R24 and it completely failed for no good reason so caution is needed with these. Mine just stopped lighting up and it no longer booted whether on AC or batteries.

Support for this instrument is via slow e-mail responses coming from somewhere in Japan. That is, if you can find the web page and do not require any interactive assistance. They referred me to Samson in New York for service. My R16 had failed just after the warranty expired, and I was told I had to send it to SN echnologies, in Hauppauge, New York for repair. They refused to repair it under warranty and told me that the thing had completely died and that it needed a new main board plus a power supply. Their repair estimate was well over two bills, which I refused. I can buy two digitial recorders from a better company for that price. They charged me fifty for looking at it, and additionally I had to pay shipping costs both ways. I decided that I will not buy anything from sams-n or Zoom again after this horrible experience. I do not recommend buying any of the Zoom recorders after this spontaneous failure and very shoddy customer treatment.

Comments about Zoom R24 Multitrack Recorder/Interface/Controller/Sampler:

What is so great about this thing is the fact that it is a full-package recording studio. Everything you may need is available inside: from a drum machine, to a sampler, built in mics if you really insist on remaining bare-bones, effects and more at reasonable to good quality. It can also work in varying modes as a studio and if you so desire: laptop or desktop DAW (with software, cables and even a sample bank). Now you can choose how you want to use it: I use it as a stand-alone 24 track recorder, others may use it as interface etc.

As a stand alone the machine is very capable, provides good quality sounds and effects - all squeezed into a tiny package (more or less the size of a 15" laptop PC) that can be taken almost anywhere (it can also work on batteries).

This full-package-in - a small-shell and reasonable price thing has a price: it is somewhat cumbersome to operate: more browsing through menues and screens than ever before, and this might take some getting used to. I say - keep your user manual at hand at all times.

Other than this I find it to be very satisfying in recording, and mixing professional sounding musical pieces from the comfort of my bedroom.

R24 had some bugs, but a downloadable software upgrade fixed the problem

        By tom reisner

        from nashville

Comments about Zoom R24 Multitrack Recorder/Interface/Controller/Sampler:

I had been using an MRS-1044 CD model for the past 10 years. I avoid mixing on computer like the plaque, so zoom's stand-alone recorders with the built-in drum programs are just what I need. I recently upgraded to the R-8 and loved the greatly improved sound of the drum loops that came with it, but found the limitation of 8 tracks made it difficult to make full use of the features without bouncing lots of tracks. So I traded it in for the R24, and having resolved the software issue discussed above, I am looking forward to another decade of fun recording songs on this amazing machine.
The drum loops and hundreds of editable effects are fantastic. I don't use the built-in mics much, but they work better than you might expect. And I have no desire to hook the unit up to a computer for mixing, but many others will enjoy that feature. I also don't need to record more than one track at a time, but many others will make good use of that feature.
A serious bug in the R24 (system 1.1) surfaced when I tried to use the punch-in feature to overdub part of a track. After recording drums and a guitar track, the R24 would no longer retain additional parts that I tried to add on a third (bass) track. The unit would not save the added part, and instead a loud "white noise" was heard. I found a forum on the web that led me to a downloadable software upgrade on the zoom website. Thankfully, after downloading and installing the 1.12 software upgrade, the problem seems to be fixed, and I can now punch in parts with no further problems. Needless to say, I was greatly relieved to be able to get the unit to work as it should.

Zoom R24 needs system upgrade to work properly

        By tom reisner

        from nashville

Comments about Zoom R24 Multitrack Recorder/Interface/Controller/Sampler:

the software glitch gave me a mild heart attack, but now that it seems to be okay with the new improved 1.12 version, i'm looking forward to recording some great new tunes with it.
I love zoom digital recorders and have been using them for over 10 years now. I recently got the R8, and loved that little sucker, but decided to upgrade to the R24 so I could make better use of the drum loops available to record high quality drum tracks, and avoid the need for bouncing tracks. I quickly ran into a serious bug in the R24 (system version 1.1) that prevented the use of the punch in/overdub feature after a couple of tracks had been recorded on a song. The recorder would not save the newly recorded parts, and instead there would be a loud "white noise" where the overdub was attempted. Examining a discussion of this problem on a zoom R24 on-line forum, I learned of an available software download from the zoom website that solves this problem, upgrading the unit to the newer version 1.12. I just performed the software install, and am relieved that the adjustment seems to have all systems working properly now. Assuming I don't run into any further problems, I do love this recorder and would highly recommend it.

        Zoom R24 Review

        By Jon Gill

        from Indiana

Comments about Zoom R24 Multitrack Recorder/Interface/Controller/Sampler:

A lot of bang for the buck. It will probably take months to explore all the possibilities and configurations. The beauty is that it's very plug an play for anyone having used similar products. What a few quick youtube demos on how to do basics, and it's a snap to get solid CD quality recordings
Everything you need to lay down recordings, including drum tracks and kit samples. Plugged it into a band practice to record some demo tracks to practice too, and was extermely simple to turn on an get rolling. Haven't used any of the effects/sends because all the editing and mastering would be done on a laptop, but will expore that.
        Solid build, very good construction
For the money, it does as much and more than anything else in it's price range.

Worth every penny for the record function alone. The drum machine, DAW control, sampler, guitar tuner, etc just make this an insaine value!
Bought this to record - it does this extremely well.
        No issues so far.
        Love it!

        Review of Zoom R24

Comments about Zoom R24 Multitrack Recorder/Interface/Controller/Sampler:

It is hard to believe the amount of features that this unit has. It is smaller than a laptop. This thing can be used with a computer,if you wish, or completely independent, which really makes it truely portable for location recording. I also bought the pro audio dvd tutorial, which helps alot to understand the whole process. This is my first venture into digital recording. Back in the 1980's & 1990's, I had an 8-Track recording studio, (all analog) and it took about 10 times worth of Equipment to do what this unit does. I'm still learning,so far so good.
