Comments about Yamaha YFL-381H Intermediate Flute:
Great buy on a lovely intermediate instrument. I don't know why it's so inexpensive.
B foot, open holes, inline G, just as advertised. Came with a Yamaha case, two cleaning cloths (outside and inside), and lots of Yamaha flyers. It came with plastic plugs already inserted. Advertised as a used flute, needed repair.
We bought this flute for my daughter, a sophomore in high school. She wanted a good flute with open holes and a b foot, and this one matched her requirements. Plus, this model was significantly less expensive here than anywhere else. We were prepared to replace pads, get some dents repaired, etc. and fully expected to, at this price.
After some confusion and weirdness (detailed below), the flute arrived and it was beautiful...not a scratch or a dent anywhere and the pads are just fine! And it plays so beautifully. Our daughter used it at her state adjudications a month after it came and felt very confident and happy with its performance (and received a 98 on a level 6, the highest level). No repairs or adjustments have been made to it yet, though I'll probably take it in this summer for the first of its annual tuneups.
Excellent, see above.
The weirdness came when we received a notice that the flute had been backordered. How do you backorder a used flute? I called with my concerns, and they seemed a little puzzled too but said that this was coming from a third party and perhaps it had left the warehouse before my order came in. Then I went online and discovered the same flute, same model, word-for-word identical description, and same price to the penny on eBay. People there also complained about backordering. This made me very nervous and I wondered what we were actually getting. But Musician's Friend has always had good customer service for us so we didn't cancel.
The flute came pretty quickly, even with the backorder, and it was a wonderful instrument (see above). In fact, we could believe that it was a new flute, or perhaps a demo model. But the backordering thing was a little strange. I'm curious about the history of these flutes; there must be more than one since this deal is still available even though our flute arrived in March.
