Comments about D'Addario ECB81-5SL Chromes Flat Wound 5-String Bass Soft SL Strings:
The beauty of Chromes is that they have a deep, powerful thump on the fundamental tone like you would expect from a flat, but they also have a lot of higher harmonic content like you would expect from a roundwound. Chromes retain those harmonics for a long time, too--about six months with heavy playing, a year or more with light playing. After their exceptionally long "break in" period, they sound more like a traditional flatwound. Chromes feel absolutely smooth and make almost no finger noise, I use them on all my basses, including my fretless and active basses, all sound amazing. Zero fret wear, too, unlike roundwounds and half rounds. I change them very rarely, only when I want a brighter sound, some I never change. I've never broken one. I was a little worried about trying the fiver set, but that low B is fat and has a nice harmonic ring out, too, no complaints about it. The real icing on the cake about Chromes is that they are one of the cheapest bass strings on the market. Chromes really have the whole package--tone, character, long life, reliability, easy on the hands and your fretwork, easy on the wallet...

Made the switch to flats, won't go back.
Don't be a fool, roundwounds are simply not for bass players. Don't believe me? Ask Les Claypool what he uses. Chromes are nice, I might try steels next just to be completely sure of what I like. Make the switch don't be a...
Comments about D'Addario ECB81-5SL Chromes Flat Wound 5-String Bass Soft SL Strings:
Ultimately I am totally satified with my Chromes. I have been a working bassist for the better part of 2 decades and I can honestly say they are on par with the sound and quality of anything i have ever used. I use the chromes on my Custom Shop 5 fretless and dont loose anything except string noise with them.
These strings are very comfortable to play in terms of tension and feel. Tuned at standard 440 they feel noticeably 'loose' and very easy to manipulate. the tone is exactly as the package states- warm and mellow- however with active electronics its no difficult task to extract way more definition than you would expect from flatwound strings.
I got my first set and upon installation the low B broke at the ball before i got it to tension. I contacted Musicians Friend with the issue and they immediately sent a new set! The new set went on with no problems at all and far exceeds my expectations for both their quality and the service I got from M-F. They assured me that this was in no way a recurring issue with these strings, and with the exception of my first set I would give these strings a solid 10.
I researched a ton of flatwounds before choosing these. I played close attention to the reviews and narrowed it down to the Chromes and another brand. The chromes were cheaper and since this is my first forray into flatwound strings and fretless bass, i went with the chromes and couldnt be more satisfied.
Comments about D'Addario ECB81-5SL Chromes Flat Wound 5-String Bass Soft SL Strings:
Warm and mellow describes best. I love these strings. Very smooth sound, and they last forever. I have them on two of my basses, and they sound better with my active EQ basses than my passives. They do, however, require some readjusting of bridge height. The gauges of the strings are not that far off of what I was using before, but they definitely buzzed on adjacent frets when playing, particularly the B and G strings.
