Comments about D'Addario EJ57 Nickel Custom Medium 5-String Banjo Strings (11-22):

I've played 5-string banjo for years and regularly broke the 9 or 10 gauge 1st or 5th string which always made me wonder whether 9 or 10 gauge is adequate (or whether I'm just a bloomin' gorilla when I pick bluegrass stuff). So when I saw I this gauge set of strings (11, 12, 13, 22, 11) I gave it a try. Since switching I have yet to break a 1st or 5th string. Additionally, 1st / 5th string pinches feel better to me - more solid, with better string resistance for how I play. In addition I like the extra bendability of the 3rd (G) string at 13 (say versus 16), which is the string I bend the most in the lower neck region, although the 2nd string at 12 bends nicely in the lower neck region too. The fourth string, at 22, has the advantage of holding it's tone better than a 20 when I down-tune it to play in drop C tuning or whatnot. I like the balance and feel overall and probably won't switch to another string set gauge anytime soon.
