Bright Big Sound, Punchy Bottom

By Jeff Thompson

from Atlanta, Georgia USA

Comments about D'Addario EXL160 Gauge Nickel Wound Electric Bass Strings:

6 months of regular playing warm these strings. High end rounds out. Still big sound, but more "woody" and just smoother sounding. They age well, if you don't mind the subtle changes in tone over time. It's all personal preference. Overall, these are very "musical" sounding strings to my ear, and I'm able to move around the fretboard easily. Because they start out big and bright sounding, they can jump out and compete with the lead guitar, if pushed. It handles Drop D tuning on the low string, although I think the EXL 160 set of bass strings could be a little stiffer on the low string. This is a 105 gauge - a 110 gauge on a heaver set, matched with the 50, 70, 85 gauge strings of the EXL 160 would be the ultimate Drop D Tuned rock machine. With those very low notes, very bright strings become even more awesome and thrilling! There are comprable products in a very competive musical string industry that would do. They use slightly different materials, coatings, and windings. These medium gauge strings kind of gives you the best of all worlds, because you can use these strings, your bass settings, your amp settings to dial in rock, funk, country, blues, reggae, "space jazz" to "roadhouse punk". All purpose string, and for the price and quality, compared with others that sound this good, a great value.
I like to play the cheapest gear I can find, because usually a bass is a bass, no matter what the price, if you know how to set them up and fine tune them for your sound - why pay more? As you can see, I am not romantic about guitars, basses, or gear. I am romantic about SOUND. There are many great strings on the market, who produce great sound. This is a great gauge to work with and the sound is big, bright, with a punchy bottom, and I used a set to replace some strings that came with a budget black Rogue LX200B Bass. The Addario EXL 160 set squeezed in the nut barely - very tight is very good. The bass lines I played stood out in the room with authority and presence. So, remember that the price for these strings are on the low end. Makes the other stock pick-ups on the bass sound like top end Seymore Duncans. A new set will take a few days of playing to keep itself in tune, but I think that normal for the size and type of string. You can get bass sounds from clean, clear, and round with a light touch, and then dig in a little on the fretboard and get some aggressive grind. These strings allow one to be remarkably expressive. 3 words --" Big", "Bright", "Punchy". 1 phrase -- "on a budget."
Superb quality string. Not as hip as the newer coated strings, but love the sound they produce.
I could always use a lower price, but this is about the lowest price around. If these were coated with "space age polymeres" for the same price - you wouldn't be able to keep these on the shelf - that is why I gave it a 9.

Comments about D'Addario EXL160 Gauge Nickel Wound Electric Bass Strings:

i recently bought a vintage 1977 gibson thunderbird IV and these were the strings that happened to be on it. for one i have never liked d'addario strings that much anyway. the sound is ok, not the best though. and it makes a buzzing near the bridge (especcially on the a string) and i really hate that. i dont think they would be worth the money money, ok if you get them free (like i did i never would have bought these) they slap against the neck alot & sometimes the pickups. but they are durable and do not break easily. so my advice would be ok if you get them for free, not good to buy
