As a longtime user (almost 2 decades at this point) of a great deal of D'Addario Strings across the tonal spectrum of 4, 5 & 6-string Basses (from their ProSteels and previous generation Prism steel strings to their Coated XL Nickels and Phosphor-Bronze Acoustic Bass Guitar, which I feel are the best sounding as well as "feeling" coated strings currently on the market) I have to say that while not my absolute favorite (that would be the "Piano-chime" of their ProSteel sets, which I use on all but one of my Fretted Basses) I use and enjoy the XL Nickels on my custom Spector Euro Bolt-On 5 DLX FM set up with EMG P5 & Dual Coil DC pickups and Aguilar OBP-3SK/PP 3-band preamp.
While not a fan in general of the traditional "P-Bass" Precision pickup tone, I was taken aback by Fender's '95-'08 "American Deluxe" Precision Bass series of Basses, which combined a P in the standard position and a Dual Coil humbucker in the Jazz Bass bridge position. This gave the Bass a hefty amount of Midrange you can dial in from the DC pickup, which is the main reason of my dislike of Precision Basses and my LIKE of the American Deluxe line. Unfortunately, Fender revamped the "American Deluxe" line in 2010 and moved to a standard P/J setup as opposed to the Dual Coil pickup, and the older P/DC American Deluxe Precisions have increased in price quite rapidly on the Used Market. So I installed the EMG equivalent in a "spare" Spector of mine and between the Alder & Maple body, Maple Neck and bolt-on Neck design this has gotten me extremely close to the tone of the American Deluxe Precisions... as well ergonomically in the Spector body & neck I'm far more comfortable with than the standard Precision.
However, I also noticed that while my beloved ProSteels were a bit too bright and metallic for the "Precision Sound" (even as non-traditional as it is with the Dual Coil bridge pickup) and decided to try D'Addario's XL Nickels, which were my String-Of-Choice before moving onto bolt-on Basses and the aggressive midrange and tone of steel strings. And they worked perfectly! While still having a strong response of notes on the B-string and an overall powerful presence, they are toned-down enough for the Precision pickup to shine when soloed but have more than enough midrange to add when the DC pickup is added into the mix.
D'Addario's XL Nickel Strings were the final, *crucial* ingredient in my "Spector Euro-Deluxe Precision Bass V" modified bass that made it a valuable part of my "Toolbox"... even when Producers eyes either bulge or squint suspiciously when I remove it from its case and say "Okay, the "P-Bass" is ready to track". By the time the first run-through is over I inevitably get either an outright compliment or something to the effect of "You know, that thing really DOES sound like a Precision with a little something extra" when the Dual Coil pickup is mixed with the P5... :-D And at the extremely reasonable price for a 5-string set, I ALWAYS have several sets, gauges and string amounts pre-cut for my Basses & stashed in various places (Cases/Gig Bags, Pedalboards, and my Cable/Equipment Bag) for lightening-quick string changes should the rare-but-occasional Bass String break occur!

D'Addario strings are the only strings I use now. I was using Ernie Ball strings, but now it's D'Addario. These strings sound great, and really improved my bass's sound. I was surprised how bright they are. I had my G&L 4 string bass set up for the tuning of B,E,A,D. I bought these strings for that purpose. 5s all the way! Get these for your 5! :)
