These are, in my opinion, a Great all around string for most music styles and have a fairly good life span. I started using the XL's quite a while back as I used 'OTHER' strings which were never available or soon became unavailable at a lot of different places I would play. I like consistancy and would sometimes have to use 'OTHER' brands which were okay but would seem to have different tensioning, etc. which would absolutely affect my tone and feel. The D'Addario XL's excelled in that they felt good, sounded good, are fairly easy on the frets and most of all, were and are available at almost any music store you may find yourself in around the country. And sometimes you never know when you are on tour when that time comes when you may need strings in a big way. The consistancy of them being readily available almost anywhere is a big factor to me because in those situations you can have the same strings that you AND your bass are most use to...To me thats sometimes a priceless asset! I use two basses most of the time, so splitting the workload between the two also give the strings a longer life all the way around as you are not playing one set of strings to death all the time. Great TONE till the Cow's Come Home, In my opinion anyway, but you know what they say about opinion's!!!

I put these on a Pedulla Thunderbolt that I have and it really hurt the tone of the bass (with upgraded Audere preamp and Norstrand DC pickups). I can't say that the strings were on the border of lifeless, but there were absolutely no dynamics - there was something missing. I have been happy with Carvin, Ernie Ball, and DR strings, but these strings I wouldn't buy again. I removed them after a couple of hours of play, put on a set of Carvin's, and my bass had a lot more growl.

Comments about D'Addario EXL170-5TP 5-String Bass Guitar Strings (2 Sets):
The EXL 170-5TP are excellent for finger picking, slapping and popping. I've been buying the two-set for about two years. I highly recommend buying this set. They're as good as the famous player named strings. I buy the same for my four string.

For the price, you can't beat D'addario.
This is my 3rd set of bass strings in 2 months. I'm a guitarist and didn't know how to install the b-string. I broke 2 before this pack because I cut them too short. Expensive lesson. Previous strings were DR's. I like these, but I've always been a fan of DR's. I would buy these again, they feel good when you slap a da bass.
Can't beat this quality for the price.
2 packs for what music stores charge you for one! You know you want these.

These strings are what I use, I play bass for a living for a well known country star. I also do studio work for many diffrent styles of music. The strings are good If you know how to play them. Don't expect any string to make you super man.
Comments about D'Addario EXL170-5TP 5-String Bass Guitar Strings (2 Sets):
I play light with a 1.9mm rounded triangle, and I use a lot of chords and pinch harmonic vibratos in my songs. awesome death squeals, lots of sustain, and despite having a light touch, great tonal depth. I can play with these for a month and still get a great recording sound. they're the best string deal I've ever found--for the price, they can't be beat. IMO, they're as good as those expensive elixers. don't waste your money; but these strings.
Comments about D'Addario EXL170-5TP 5-String Bass Guitar Strings (2 Sets):
I just tried a set after playing D'Addario "Slow Wounds s", for the past three and a half years. Although my chops may not be as lighteneing fast or stellar chops like the professional above me, I gig about three times a week, and try to get a rehearsal in now and then. I just feel the tone dropped from these strings earlier than their departed cousins the slow wounds. "Bring Back the "Slow Wounds", Jim"
Comments about D'Addario EXL170-5TP 5-String Bass Guitar Strings (2 Sets):
I ordered these strings because I bought a bass off of someone and the strings he had on there were mottled black and covered in what looked like sauce from General Tso's chicken...needless to say, they sounded like baling twine.I put on a fresh set of these, along with setting up the tone and tightening all the screws and my bass plays like a dream. Although I think some of the more expensive strings might produce a better sound, these are GREAT and can stand up to my plucking for at least a month or so. Even if you're a pro that wears out strings every week, you still get two packs for MUCH less than some of those other over-hyped strings, so it's great value and you never have to worry about quality or consistency. I've never had bad D'addario strings on any guitar I've owned, bass or otherwise. Definitely recommended, at least for fellow hobby-level bassists.
